Rating: Summary: Good Quick Read Review: This book was a quick good read, written from the heart. The woman boasts about her exciting life, which was at moments inspiring, but hard to believe. I've discussed the book with other educated well-traveled women in my book club, and there were a few who just absolutely could not stand the woman, and thought of her as an air-head. I didn't apreciate her afterword about 9/11. I thought it was absolute nonesense, and made me doubt that she has actually learned anything from her experiences abroad.I would recommend this book to young women in or right out of college. Adventure is right around the corner! Entertaining.
Rating: Summary: Should be titled "Sluttybabe" Review: Ivy Leaguer of priviledge menstruates, sleeps & shoots her way to publication. There must be more to photojournalism than this.
Rating: Summary: Could not put it down! Review: I loved this book! Having once been an adventure diva myself and now a mom with 3 kids under 5 it was wonderful to see how Deborah has come full circle in her life and to be proud of herself and her past. I will be very interested to see how Darren Starr can put her book in movie form without making her look negative. You rock Deborah!
Rating: Summary: compelling read for photo adventurers Review: i was given this book from a curreny gamma photographer who said that it was ok. i read it with the expectation that i would find fault with it. i found myself drawn to it to finish it within three days. i can see this book as a required read for photojournalist students.
Rating: Summary: Insightful and a breath of fresh air Review: Remember, this is an auto-biography, the author has created this book to share her life with you the reader (hint hint: she's going to write alomost entirely about herself). There have been many complaints from other reviewers about how much she writes about her own feelings, experiences, and actions. It's an auto-biography for Chirst's sake! And what an interesting life to write about! As a budding photojournalist, I was very eager to read about all of the insights she includes about the various photo agencies and how they function in the news-making process. But that information came second to the stories of how she interacted with her subjects and collegues. So what if she got it on with a lot of guys. She used them just as much as they used her (positively and negatively speaking). Because of her sex she had to hurdle barriers much higher than her male counterparts. And because it is so difficult to make it in such a masculine industry it takes a special type of woman to succeed - a proper mixture of courage, naitivete, fearlessness, compassion, and stoicism. I can't say if she's a role model or a heroine, but I admire her nonetheless. If you're looking for an enjoyable summer read then you've stumbled onto a great book. If you want to get a better understanding of the political and socio-economical climate of the '80s there are other resources for that.
Rating: Summary: Shutterbabe will move you Review: Loved this book. Once into it you cannot put it down. As Kogan tells the story of her fledgling career as a photojournalist you immediately get carried away into her amazing adventures and genuine frankness. A woman who is not afraid to admit her flaws, and yet has a raw determination that few of us are willing to face. Definately worth the read.
Rating: Summary: Magnificent, Moving Memoir Review: Rarely does a non-fiction book leave me weeping at its conclusion, but this one most assuredly did. Deborah's journey from cocksure devil-may-care daredevil war photographer, to cautious mother-and-proud-of-it, is an alternately heart-rending and heartwarming tale of personal growth. I don't understand the other reviews which commented negatively on her writing; I found it fluid and biting. The issues raised by Deborah's story -- including women's roles in society, the press's role in covering tragedy, and the emotional investment that parents owe their children -- are huge and worthwhile. Her own story is by turns harrowing and amusing, told with ample intelligence and self-deprecation. I loved the book. Unreservedly.
Rating: Summary: A little sunday afternoon pleasure Review: This book is amazing in content. When reading it you are completely astounded and shocked at what this young woman did with her life. It's a great, quick read that will give you insight to women, current events, and the bigger questions, if you dare to think on them. Writing is so-so, but it's good enough to get you through to the point. End gets a little preachy and self-justified, but overall, worth reading.
Rating: Summary: If it wasn't non-fiction, you wouldn't believe it. Review: Deborah Copaken Kogan has led a remarkable life already. Like a real-life Lara Croft, she is an amazingly tough and resilient person. She wins points for the feminist movement through action and achievement, not rhetoric, since she endures things that most men I know would not dare face. Parts of this book are shocking enough that they will rip you out of your comfortable Lay-Z-Boy. Beware though, you will probably be jealous of Deborah's life if you have any sense of adventure.
Rating: Summary: didn't know what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised Review: I bought this book while walking around a bookstore. I wasn't sure what to expect out of it.. I saw the title and, being an aspiring photographer myself, decided to see waht it was about. I was pleasantly surprised by the book. I liked reading about her adventures, though there was one part in Romania (the orphanage) that was pretty hard to stomach. She does talk a lot about her sexual encounters with the men she happens upon in her travels, but I don't think it's what the book is about.... it's just what people are focusing on. SHe didn't write a book about getting laid.. it just happened to be a big part of what went on then. My only complaint, and not enough to knock a star off, is that there were more pictures. She's very descriptive, but there were some things that I wish I could've seen through her lens that weren't included. It's a very inspiring book if you give it a chance.
