Rating: Summary: A life.... Review: I love this book because is a life in there, I saw the ducumental of eldon's life, and is a history about a man who loves the life.(sorry I don't write in english very well) Vi el documental acera de la vida de Eldon, y me gusto mucho por eso ahora quiero el libro, soy diseñadora grafica y me parece que el diseño es hermoso, con mucha creatividad. Elisa Orozco
Rating: Summary: A visual bible of how to correctly lead a creative life Review: In this case, a picture is worth infinite words. In my case, I bought the book based on title alone: it drew me in that fast. When I got home, I was immediately fascinated by the beautifully raw artwork. This is the kind of stuff that just pours out, instant genius because it does what all the best art does: breaks the rules because it's simply not concerned with them; never pauses to imagine there are any in the first place. It's created with a childs intuition to make things just because they needs to be made, with no fear, and because making things is worthwhile. And FUN. This is fun stuff to take in because it's so pure. So; that part of the book is amazing. BUT THEN - you go back to the beginning and read the incredible account of Dan's life as told through his mothers eyes, and then the work transcends genius and becomes as powerful as christ on the cross, or an indian totem, or a japanese garden, or the Koran, or a family quilt, or a sunset. Suddenly all the visual clues that were at first just visually beautiful, they become a life. A wonderful life of young love, adventure, immortality, success, understanding, and tragedy. I felt like I knew these people. I wish I did. I want a journey like this one. Between the work itself and a mother's public contemplations on what the work is about, this book becomes golden. It will change you for the better, I guarantee, and in the meantime make you aware of this 22 year old kid who, above all his talents, simply knew how to live. Something many of us, myself included, often have trouble with because of all those damned rules. Enjoy.
Rating: Summary: memeories never had... Review: its strange, writing this. i never knew him, though i had a teahcer back in high school who tought him. he is said to have been an exceptional student in art. i've looked through this book over and over, letting the images, words, phrases just seep into my mind. its a personnal diary, yet this book tells a story of a life, fully of energy burning to the limits...and beyond. unfortunately that bright candle was put out very suddenly by an unfortunate accident. he died trying to help a country that he love working in, helping the children and people of war-torn somalia. the book tells of conflict, confusuion, burdens, pains, laughter and joys. it is of a one man journly to help where ever he could, and to tell the world what was going on. its a great book for art lovers, or anyone else...i definately recommend it.
Rating: Summary: beautiful book Review: This is an inspiring art book made by a truly passionate person. I think it tells a beautiful story using pictures and words. Artists and humanitarians will love this book. After looking at this book, I am left with the impression that Dan Eldon must have been a wonderful person and he definitely lives on in these pages. I cannot wait to read about him further and see the video as well.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: Wow, how does one do justice to a person's work that provokes feelings beyond words? Dan Eldon is someone that inspires me. He exudes a youth and exhuberance that exceeds even death. His journals are uninhibited and I am honoured to be able to glimpse even a tiny glance into his heart and soul. His journals are more artistic, but for students of economic development and international relations, Dan Eldon's story told through the video "Dying to Tell the Story," is truly poignant and a must see. This video had me in tears and I admire Eldon for going out there and revealing a truth of the world economy and violence that most people are unwilling to do or simply, ignorant of. For those hardened cynics, Eldon's story will surely break your heart.
Rating: Summary: Listen to different peoples' reactions to this book. Review: This book will undoubtedly be admired on several levels. It is the story of a life well lived, it is an example of limitless creativity, and it is a reminder of the larger injustice that permeates much of this world. Personally, I admire Eldon's work for several reasons. Like Eldon I am dyslexic and take inspiration from the fact that he did not let his disability hamper him in any fashion. His journal is a commentary on many things including, life, art, injustice, passion, and perception. Eldon made extrordinary use of his talents in his short life time. His art and experience teach us that the value in life is in the process of living itself, not in goals and dreams that inevitably postpone happiness.
Rating: Summary: Dan Eldon - An Aesthetic Visionary Review: This is a fabulous collection of Eldon's collage work and brief writings. It is like opening up his life and taking a peek he never would have expected. The images are breathtaking, and the arrangements inspiring. I love, love this exceptional book.
Rating: Summary: testament to vision Review: I couldn't let the review preceeding this one be the first and last word. To put it simply, this book is an amazing representation of someone with artistic vision and moral integrity. It is not a hard-hitting book of photojournalism, nor does it present itself to be--rather, it is a staggering view into a talent that was cut short and is still far more insightful than most contemporary artists working today. Dan's fate evelates the book to the point of tragedy and forces the question: why did Somalia happen the way it did? But it would stand well on its own regardless. CNN has also produced a documentary made by his sister on the events that led to his death--should you be equally compelled (as I was) to find out more about what happened and why it was all allowed to happen in the first place.
Rating: Summary: YOU WANT THIS BOOK! Review: This truly is an incredible publication. Some reviews state disappointment at it not being the story of a fascintating life cut short. I disagree. This book is exactly that. Look into the private pages of an artist/ adventurer who was never anticipating their publication. This book is fascinating, inspiring and at the same time, tragic. What brilliant talent Dan had. And what a perfect way to preserve the memory and art of a short but full life. This book will directly effect all who read it.
Rating: Summary: Artistic, personal and inspiring Review: When I ran into this book a few years ago, completely by chance, I had to have a copy of it. Even though Dan Eldon was only my age, he had done so much that it has inspired me to do things I had never done before. Even though I am an avid reader, I have never had a book influence me as much as this one. This is a must read if you have not done so yet.
