Rating: Summary: Book should be called "Woe is Me" Review: I was amped when I bought this book because I thought it was going to have a lot of information about Flex Wheeler's bodybuilding career, training, etc. He has awesome genetics and is a legend in bodybuilding. While it did contain some bodybuilding information, it was overshadowed by all the bad stuff that happened in his life, long boring stories of him talking about how awesome his girlfriend was, and how low his self esteem was. I was REALLY disappointed in this book and wish I didn't spend my money on it or more importantly, waste my time reading it.
Rating: Summary: Wheeler is an inspiration and his story is worth knowing Review: I was immediately drawn to this book due to my lifelong fasination with muscles, especially as displayed in the world of bodybuilding with the art of muscle sculpting. I was delighted to not only find a story of a great athlete but also pages filled with risk, struggle, love, belief, triumph, endurance and miracles. This is a story of a stronger than life spirit that meets his every challenge with a strength greater than any amount of physical weight that can be lifted. What an incredible inspiration Flex Wheeler is and his story is worth knowing. Flex Ability: A Story of Strength and Survival by Flex Wheeler is written in a fluid of connecting pieces that easily allows the reader to paint a vivid picture of the authors life story. This was such a nice easy read that I found it hard to put down. Flex Wheeler is a man with integrity who tells it like it is, makes no excuses and picks himself up and moves on to his next challenge. Childhood trauma, poverty, fatherhood, pro-athlete status, steroids, diuretics, severe auto accident, hereditary disease Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), fame, drug free and finally peace - Flex has survived it all. Readers young and old can take something away for themselves from his life story. Today Flex is a champion of his spirit and speaks out about the dangers of using steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs and uses his life story to teach others. Flex Ability: A Story of Strength and Survival by Flex Wheeler is a book worth your time and attention. This is a great choice for an afternoon summer read!
Rating: Summary: A Great Inspirational Book Review: I'm not a fan of the bodybuilding industry, but happened upon this book. All I can say is it reminded me of the movie "Rocky." It's the story of a man who defied the odds and came out a champion. But then he learned that being a champion isn't enough. Life is really about health and your family. Do that right and anyone can be a champion. It's sad to me to see the one bad review on this site that obviously comes from a jealous competitor who doesn't have his own book. I'm sure glad Flex did this book because it gave me a thrill to read it and hope when it comes to my own life.
Rating: Summary: Wheeler has no clue. Review: If u want to be entertained (or disgusted, depending on how u look at it) by the antics of pro bodybuilders then by all means buy this book. But if u want to get bigger and stronger this book is NOT going to help u by a long shot. First and foremost Wheeler is phenomenolly gifted genetically and loaded to the gills with every steroid known to man. he would have grown big no matter what training he did. He has no clue, absolutely no clue as to how to train regular people who can, if they train properly build an impressive physique. The routines in this book are training suicide for regular people who don't want to get into the utter mess of steroid abuse. I mean seriously do u really think u can train 8 hours a day, eat 7 meals a day, have a personal masseuse to attend to you, buy a ton of drugs and spend money of silicone implants??these routines will only work if u have phenomenal genetics and i'll take any bet that if ur reading this review then you don't. please retain your sanity and buy sensible books on training, all available from this site. checkout authors like Stuart Mcrobert, Ellington Darden, and Mike Mentzer. Auhtors who are a credit to this honourable iron sport. You will save yourself years of frustration and finally start getting results.
Rating: Summary: Dissapointing!!! Review: The best part of this book is the fascinating insight one gets into the crazy world of professional bodybuilding. It makes me realize that one needs a full-frontal lobotomy to actually want to participate in this seedy environment that requires one to become self-absorbed and take illegal and dangerous drugs to compete effectively. In Flex Wheeler's book Flex Ability, we see Flex's rise in a "sport" full of narcissistic, immature, backstabbing group of steroid users. I give this book 2 stars just for this interesting and honest perspective. However, Flex himself is nothing more than a huge disappointment. He is no hero. He is no savior. He is in fact he same narcissistic and immature individual that this sport breeds. He ignores his responsibilities and indulges himself shamelessly. In a steriod-like rage, he bullies and beats those smaller than him. He hangs all his troubles on his past and attempts suicide numerous times. He throws tantrums when he comes in only 2nd or 3rd in national or international competitions and has absolutely no appreciation for his friends, fans, his natural God-given and genetic abilities or his success. He is, in my opinion, a loser. Eventual, Flex finds God. But I'm unconvinced that this new perspective on life has changed Flex at all. In his book, he has no pictures of his first child (of which he took no responsibility) or his second child. He still storms off the stage when he loses a major competition convinced he should have won. All in all, interesting book on bodybuilding, disappointing book on Flex Wheeler the man.
Rating: Summary: A Great Inspirational Book Review: The book is reasonably well written, not fantastic. The organization and pace could use some help. It scratches the surface on most subjects and leaves me feeling that Flex's primary issue preventing him from success and enjoying his success are his immaturity, his emotions, his morality, and his intelligence level. I don't buy into his crying about his upbringing, his seduction by an older woman/women which he now calls abuse or anything else. Nor do I buy into his passing off of Steroids in the 80's as an unknown OK or an unknown safety issue. The danger, and the illegality of steroids has been around gyms since I can remember - which includes the 70's. However, since there are so few tittles on this subject - if you are a bodybuilder, or a casual lifter who works out to look and feel good - this book is a must read. I hope Flex's next book has more details on the Male Beauty Contest Industry, (Bodybuilding) the Supplement Industry that Supports it, and Strange people like Joe Weider. We all read the magazines, and we all try to get through to the truth of the mater, and this book gives you a quick fish eye lens view of it. The fact that Weider Industries cut off Flex's contract immediately upon his car crash without even checking on him or his family tells you something about the industry. I finished the book wanting more, and a faster pace. Do another one Flex and Stay Clean!
Rating: Summary: Flex Ability Review: This book really lets you see the real Flex Wheeler from the inside out. He gets down to the dirt of what is printed about him and clarifies the untruths. You'll love this book. I could't put it down.
