Summary: Great book!
Review: It had all the elements to make up an exciting and believable space opera within the Human-Covenant War storyline and characters. Just as other great sci-fi works, past and present, have done in this same adventurous genre: "Stranger in a Strange Land", "Puppet Masters", "Foundation", "2001", "2010", "Rendezvous with Rama", "Ringworld", all the "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" books, "Advent of the Corps" and others.

Summary: Great book, better than Fall of Reach
Review: OK, I really liked the Fall of Reach (and The Flood, but since that's a different author, I'm not going to compare it). Unfortunately, the Fall of Reach, although a fun read with a very nice backstory, and certainly a great companion to the Halo fan, was lacking in the editing department (I have the first edition...but I'm not really sure if there's more). Spelling mistakes, repeated words, and other grammar errors abound in the Fall of Reach...however...First Strike is a different story (well...obviously, but you know what I mean). No really noticeable errors (at least, I didn't see any). Combine that with Nylund's descriptive style, and you have yourself a winner! I very much enjoyed it, and it's enthralling story and fast-paced action. It certainly helps the wait for Halo 2!

Summary: Whoa...
Review: This book is a work of art. I've read Fall of Reach and Halo: The Flood (Fall of Reach being the better of the two) but this one surpasses both by far. I'm a big fan of Fall of Reach but there were no twists in the plot because you knew, obviously, that Reach would fall. This book kept you guessing at every turn and the final ending was a huge surprise. And if you're like me, you will grow attached to the characters that are so well profiled in this book. This time, the Master Chief shows some emotion and faces a moral dilemma, unlike the previous books. I sat down and read this book for hours, and when I realized I was close to the end, I was dismayed. You get a more in-depth look at Covenent culture and religion and their links to the mysterious Forerunners. Also there's some friggin awesome battle scenes. If you've played Halo or bought any of the other books, buy this now.
