Rating: Summary: Whoo-ee. Will someone please turn on the fan? Review: Pungent Piles of Purple Prose! Pulsing Pangs of Poignant Pain! Perverted Peek at Porno Past!
Get the idea?
This book takes sentimentality, cliché, melodrama, formula and overkill, orders them up in tonne lots, then shoves them through a meat grinder to spit out those pre-mixed, pre-spiced, perfectly uniform patties that just ache for the barbeque. No thought required. Just light the briquettes, stoke up the heat, and watch them babies SIZZLE.
I never thought I would read a book like this... I never thought anyone could WRITE a book like this. Surely, there are boundaries that even the most jaded writers do not cross. Surely, there is a lower limit to ones rejection of self-respect. Guess not. Silly me. Kitsch is bottomless.
In a way, it isn't possible to hate this book. It is so bad that it provokes a certain campy ghoulish fascination. It becomes self-parody, like "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes". Too bad this one can't be destroyed with Donny Osmond songs. In another way, it isn't quite fair to single out "Bridges" like this. Thousands of putrid novels are published every year. They just don't take themselves so seriously. Or their readers don't, which is much the more important thing.
The fact that this book became the biggest seller since the New Testament, and generated more dripping fluid than Niagara Falls, is an indictment of the literary decay in our society. These days, we emote on queue by remote control.
Putrid Paean to Prairie Passion!
It's a sad, sad day in Iowa.
Rating: Summary: The Bridges of Madison County Review: The Bridges of Madison County, is a touching and inspiring book that teaches you to go for your dreams but also to accept your responsibilities and then take action. The love that Robert and Francesca have for each other is so strong you can almost feel it while you read the book, (which i could not put down). The story is just so sweet because its about a one of the last cowboys and simple farm wife that fall in love under the covered bridges of madison county, there are some twists and turns along the way, but you'll just have to read it for yourself to find out, it is a great book that I would suggest to anyone looking for a good, sweet love story. That is why I give this book four stars and I cant wait to rent the DVD as well.
Rating: Summary: A very moving story Review: The story involves a woman who is married and comfortable - her husband is a very good provider and truly loves his wife as much as he is capable. Their is no romance between the couple, but they do care deeply for each other and do a fine job of raising their children and provide a loving home for them. A stranger rolls into town one day and stops to ask directions. A mutual attraction quickly develops between the wife and this interesting stranger. They are unable to stop the powerful romance that comes upon them like a strong force. Ultimately, she is left with the decision of leaving her life as she knows it and running away with a man that has evoking feelings inside her that made her feel so alive, or doing the right thing for her family - faced with the decision, she is with her husband in their old farm truck on main street, she sees Robert leaving town in his pick up and she knows it's now or never. This book left me in tears. I saw the movie, and it doesn't do the story justice. This is one of the best books I have ever read. If you want to read about real undying love, this book is a must read.
