Rating: Summary: Messy Cuban Murder Mystery with too many clues . . . Review:
Someone has murdered the son of a prominent Cuban exile. Someone has taken this powerful man's son and his wife is the prime suspect.
The murder took place on the Marine Base in Guantanamo, Cuba. And so the story begins.
There is a damsel in distress. There is the "prince . . . heir to the throne." There is Castro's Cuba and all that it entails. There are secrets to be kept and secrets to be told.
I like Jack Swyteck and I'll read more of his stories. This was was a little over the top to me. Too many red herrings in the gulfstream for my liking.
I loved Jack's crusty grandmother and my favorite parts of the book were when Jack was in Cuba, trying to save his client and discover his past.
Rating: Summary: Grippando does it again! Review: For gripping courtroom drama & suspense, it doesn't get much better than Grippando's Jack Swyteck series, though everything I have read from him is superior in this genre. He certainly does not disappoint with "Hear No Evil", the latest Swyteck installment & perhaps his best. Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: Grippando Serves another Great Summer Read Review: Grippando does it again. Hear No Evil is a fast-moving, Jack Swytech thriller. Like the previous three novels in this series, the plot of this novel is intricate and moves at a staccato pace. Throw in a twist at the end of every chapter and you have a great summer read.
Grippando is fast becoming one of my favorite thriller writers.
Rating: Summary: A must for suspense fans! Review: He is done it again! James Grippando's new book is going to keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time. For a fan of courtroom drama/suspense this is a must read!
Rating: Summary: DID WE READ THE SAME BOOK?? Review: I am surpised that this is the same author who wrote "Last to Die." I am half-way through this book and am so bored with it that I will probably not finish it. It's all about this lady who is accused of killing her husband and it turns out this lady is the adoptive mother of Jack Swyteck's son. She threatens Jack if he doesn't represent her that he will never see his son. So, because her husband was in the military in Guantanamo, Cuba, Jack makes trips back and forth to Cuba to get some information about her husband and everyone keeps stonewalling him and not giving him information because everything is confidential. So, he has to go back and forth and back and forth to get tidbits of information. And, he makes some side trips to his mother's birthplace near Cuba. That's it. That's the story so far. No suspense. No character development. No trial (yet). So boring!! Don't waste your money.
Rating: Summary: Another Solid Novel In The Swyteck Series Review: James Grippando continues to write fantastic legal thrillers. In his latest, HEAR NO EVIL, defense attorney Jack Swyteck reluctantly takes a case with a personal attachment. It's a captivating read from page one until the last sentence. The reader is never sure when Jack's client is telling the truth, or telling a lie which adds to the suspense. It's a court room thriller with many twists and turns that keeps the reader guessing. My favorite kind of book.
This is the fourth novel in Grippando's Swyteck series, following THE PARDON, BEYOND SUSPICION, and LAST TO DIE. I wouldn't say that a knowledge of the three previous books is necessary to enjoy HEAR NO EVIL, but it would give the reader a better understanding of the characters. Especially BEYOND SUSPICION. THE PARDON to a lesser extent and very little of LAST TO DIE.
A new character was introduced in this book, Sofia Suarez, which has potential to be a love interest for Jack. Theo Knight returns as Jack's unorthodox assistant in a smaller role which I thought was the right move. Theo is a little over the top. He's best taken in small doses. I enjoyed the many details of Jack's past that were revealed in this book. You get a lot of back story on his Mother, and other family members that I won't mention. I didn't care for the surprise at the end dealing with the kid in the story, I thought it was a bit of a cop out, but other than that I really enjoyed the book.
Rating: Summary: Weak. Tedious. Superficial Review: Maybe I am at a loss because this is my first Grippando experience. I like Carl Hiasson and Robert Ferrigno and both of them have venued their stories in Miami. So it's not that. I guess I just didn't like Swyteck. Here are some observations.
1. Take the case or don't. Stop torturing yourself and the client.
2. YOU SHOULD KNOW IF YOU HAD A CHILD OR NOT. IT'S 2005. THIS SHOULDN'T BE GUESSWORK.
3. U.S. Attorneys don't try cases, their minions do.
4. The U.S. Attorney is involved with your family and has been for 30 years? Boy. Sounds like irreconcilable conflict problems.
5. The Marine Corps makes every witness to the death unavailable and you're not raising hell with the Federal Judge? What law school did you go to?
6. Your client lies to you every time she breathes. Do you think this is a sign you should withdraw?
6. You keep going to Cuba . . . illegally. Do you think someone would catch on?
The other point is that the chapters are "mail 'em in chapters." A little wine, a couple of beautiful sunsets, a few lines of dialogue, nothing for the reader to say "oh, now I understand."
Weak stuff. I don't see the excitement. Three stars. Could have been two. Larry Scantlebury
Rating: Summary: A Book-By-Number Review: Normally, I applaud authors/editors who are able to rein in a story to keep it tight, and not add too much extraneous information, but not in this case.
While the story moved along adroitly, there were many parts of the plot that could have been explored in greater detail, but were glossed over in an effort to keep the story moving. Too many James Patterson-like short chapters permeate this book, making it read like a screenplay instead of a novel.
Entire chapters have seemingly been cut, leaving the reader to wonder why certain elements of the story were introduced in the first place. The romantic angle between Jack Swyteck and his co-attorney, Sofia, is never explored though it is hinted at frequently. The investigations done by supporting character Theo are, with one exception, totally glossed over.
This was enjoyable, but it's not much more than a book-by-number.
Rating: Summary: Hear No Evil Review: See book summary above.
Well I certainly enjoyed reading this one.
I like Grippando's writing style. He makes it hard to stop reading. I was engrossed from start to finish.
A good story and a great read.
Highly Recommended.
Rating: Summary: Not As Good As I Expected! Review: This story was interesting in spurts, with an ending that left a lot to be desired. Which is surprising for me when it comes to a James Grippando novel. He usually has me turning the pages at warp speed, anxious to see what comes next, but this time the story just didn't grab me. I never once felt any kind of compassion for Lindsey. Too many lies. That being said I still look forward to what comes next with Jack.
