Rating: Summary: Adventure in the Wild Review: As a boy I used to love books like this, about untamed nature and woodlore and woodcraft, but it has been many years since I've read them. I recently had the occasion to revisit this excellent novel, and found that it has aged quite well and is still a terrific read. The story has to do with a wolf named White Fang, and begins before he was born, with his father and mother leading a pack in the dead of winter in the frozen Canadian wilderness. There is no game around and all are starving. They harass and harry a beleaguered dog-sled team over the course of several days, picking the dogs off one by one, then finally surrounding the one remaining man. He builds a ring of fire to protect himself from these ravenous wolves, but knows he soon must succumb to exhaustion. He notices the she-wolf, sitting patiently outside the ring, seemingly indifferent--except for the string of drool coming out of her mouth in anticipation of making a meal out of him. That is the lesson here, in this story of White Fang. It is a savage world, a world in which you either kill or are killed, eat or are eaten. His first day out of the den he kills and eats a small bird, then in turn is almost eaten by a hawk. He observes a porcupine roll itself into a ball to defend itself against a lynx, then observes the lynx yowl in pain after foolishly getting stung. The lynx plays another prominent role. Trying to survive a typical lean winter, White Fang's mother takes the desperate step of going to the absent lynx's den to eat its offspring. The enraged lynx later comes to their den and attacks, but with the help of a growing White Fang, they defeat it. It also becomes a meal. White Fang eventually gets taken in by men, first an Indian tribe where he is "tamed" with brutality, then by white traders who use him for their own base purposes. Through it all we see the cruel world in which he lives and feel his pain and hunger and anger. It is a well-plotted adventure carefully observed, and serves as a great reminder of how savage the untamed wilderness is, and that mankind is often only a bare step above it.
Rating: Summary: White Fang Review: Excellent! this book was superb. This books stunning sense of reality and suprising twists and turns makes it one of Jack London's greatest works of literature. The grisly ice of the Alaskan tundra, evil dog-baiters lusting for money and fame, and also the kindness of one man. White Fangs only friend, Weedon Scott. Who saw White Fangs courage and nobility through his snarls and bristling mane. When I started to read "White Fang" I thought "man this book is great, it can't get any better". But guess what it did, It got a whole lot better. Everyone believed White Fang was an evil that couldn't be tamed. Every one thought that he was "too far gone" and should just be shot. Weedon Scott proved them wrong when White Fang saved him and his familie's lives from a mad-man. This book was extremely realistic. White Fang was a good fighter but he couldn't dodge bullets or shoot fireballs. But his courage and determination let him survive. Even though he was a Wolf by nature he still learned to care for his master.
Rating: Summary: To Love or not to Love "Tawney-H.R Etiwanda"White Fang Review: From someone that has read Jack London extensively I can tell you that this book, while not his best, is often misunderstood as a story of a wolf's jourey. It is an outstanding book none the less. However, be sure to keep in mind as you read that this book, however easy the words may be, that is is about his struggle to find his place in life. London's talent for bringing the story to the reader and making the reader feel as though they are a part of the expirence is quite evident in this book. Children, espically ones that are unable to expirence nature, aren't going to appreciate this book as much as an adult that has had to fight to survive. This is one of my favorite books and recomended it to anyone that likes outdoor novels and enjoys a good read.
Rating: Summary: Best book I ever read Review: The main story in White Fang is about a wolf-dog who never really had puppy hood. At first White Fang is just the same as regular wolf pups but when he is exploring the unknown, a native Canadian, Gray Beaver, sees him. He yelps and his mom comes to save him but she is part dog, and Gray Beaver was her master. When he is taken to the camp of Gray Beaver he is forsaken by his kind because another puppy attacks him and gets him to fight him all the time because he is part wolf and dogs are scared of wolf, which helped him in latter life. To fight for his life, he learns to hate other dogs because he is attacked by every dog. When a cruel owner buys him he has to fight for his life. White Fang had a hard life to live and I never would never like to go though what White Fang had to go through because it was not easy to lose his mom. White Fang is definitely one of the best books I've ever read because it has great language. My Favourite Character My favourite character is White Fang. He is likeable because he is smart and loyal to people he likes. When White Fang is a puppy, he becomes an outcast in the town where Gray Beaver lives because of the puppy-pack led by his rival Lip-Lap. White Fang had a lot more to put up with like Beauty Smith, who buys White Fang from Gray Beaver. He treated White Fang like dirt. Beauty Smith causes White Fang to go insane but White Fang survives. Beauty Smith nearly kills White Fang in a dogfight, but Weedon Scott saves White Fang. Weedon Scott is the answer to all of White Fang's problems because first he saves him, then Weedon gives him a home, and he is nice to him. Characters White Fang When you first meet White Fang he is just a pup. At first he was one of five puppies but he looked different because he didn't have a red coat. He is black and white with bright white teeth. Later he is the last one of the puppies alive. One chapter shows that White Fang is one brave wolf-dog, when a lynx attacks him and his mom. He bites it even though he is afraid. Another chapter shows White Fang is smart because when a man loads his gum White Fang backs away. As Weedon Scott White Fangs last master, said, "White Fang has intelligence that must be given a chance." When White Fang's mother is taken away before his eyes, he tries to follow her but is taken back by Gray Beaver, his master. There is one problem about White Fang; he hates to be laughed at as it makes him go into a rage because it makes him feel afraid. White Fang is my favourite character. He helps you see what it is like to be different from everyone else. Gray Beaver Gray Beaver was White Fang's first master. He is a great man but if White Fang does something bad, Gray Beaver beats him. White Fang learnt "Never, no matter what the circumstance, must he dare to bite the god [Gray Beaver] who was lord and master over him." When White Fang does something good, Gray Beaver gives him a treat. Gray Beaver has black hair, green eyes, and is a native Canadian. He is also a kind man because he took White Fang in even when he was part wolf and "Sometimes tossed White Fang a piece of meat and defended him in eating it." If I had to live at the time of White Fang I would chose to be in his village. He named White Fang, White Fang because of his white fangs. Gray Beaver later in the book goes to the North-west territories to trade, and sells White Fang. I think Gray Beaver is one character that brings the book alive. White Fang is a beautifully written book. If I had Jack London's use of language and the way he writes I would be a great writer. If you want a book that is adventurous then this is your book because in every chapter something new and exciting happens. I would recommend this to anyone not just my friends. It has action, and more action and a little tragedy. The ending is excellent because it was happy and because White Fang proved that he was loyal by defending his new home. I think just at the end of the book was the most griping because there is a fight seen where White Fang is shot three times. As White Fang is described, "No mere dog could have done what he did. He is a wolf." I would give this book
Rating: Summary: Unmatched Review: This is one of my favorite books. The only other book that might be better is The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman, but Jack London has definitely outdone himself this time. It is the story about an animal who is three quarters wolf and a one quarter dog who goes from life as an indian sled dog to a fighting dog owned by a cruel man, to a loving owner who trys to show this maddened savage creature the meaning of love and kindness. What is really unique about White Fang is that it tells of what might be going on in such a creature's head. It tells of what it is like living in a den out in the wild, tells of how White Fang first comprehends the wild and what he learns aboout the law of life. It explains what his first impression of humans, and of the harsh enviorment of all the other puppies and dogs in the camp. It is beautifully written and I would suggest it to anyone who likes long, thought provoking stories about dogs and wolves and the northlands.
Rating: Summary: White Fang Review: This was a really good book. The beginning was pretty unexpected. Mainly because the whole book just changed views. It was very detailed and you could really get into it. I loved the part about when he was just born and how curious he was. I also felt bad for him towards the middle but I won't say for the sake of those who haven't read it yet. I will definatly be reading more of Jack London's books though.
Rating: Summary: It gives you a firm grasp of life and its meaning. Review: White Fang by Jack London is about a wolf-cub and his adventures of gowing-up. The cub's mother Kiche is half wolf and half dog, and his father, One Eye, is a wolf making White Fang one fourth dog. On the outside White Fang appears to be only a wolf. Throughout the book the dog inside of him begins to show mentally when he leaves the wild and becomes almost domesticated. After being separated from his mother and being the only survivor of the litter, White Fang becomes loyal to his god, Grey Beaver. Grey Beaver is an indian but White Fang looks at humans as gods that he must obey. I think the wildness in White Fang comes in his strong grasp of life. He is very smart about things and learns the laws of nature and the gods very quickly. He is also quick physically and is a good fighter. This works well for him because White Fang hates his own kind, dogs and wolves, and has a rough time getting along with them. White Fang is definately a solitary animal. This gets really hard when White Fang is given a new master Beauty Smith, who is cruel. White Fang doesn't want to leave Grey Beaver but is forced to. Things aren't looking so good for him until a man named Weedon Scott saves him and shows hom love. This was a wonderfully written book that gives the reader a real feeling of the Wild. I suggest it to deep readers. White Fang has a lot of interesting thoughts about life, but takes a lot of thinking. It is a book you have to work to understand.
Rating: Summary: One Thrill After Another!! Review: White Fang is about a wolf that learns about life the hard way. He was left with his mother, Kiche, after his father died. They soon stumbled on an Indian Camp, where they were taken in by the gods. He learned that god hands meant hurt. The Indian dogs, Lip-Lip & the puppy-pack, tortured White Fang & soon became his worst nightmare. This made him stronger, & soon ruled over the dogs. Worse was to come of him, as he was traded to Beauty Smith. White Fang became pure rage & full of hatred. He was made to fight in blood sports until he was taken by Weedon Scott. With Scott, White Fang learned to trust the god's hands &, though it took time, he started to love. He was taken to California where he lived with Scott & his family, loving & being loved, instead of hating & being hated. It was truley a thrilling & great book!
Rating: Summary: A classic tale of a dog Review: White Fang was an okay book. I expected alot more from it though. White Fang was a dog and is the narrator of the story which is an interesting way to write. He was born part dog, part wolf, and only one of his five brother and sister cubs to survive. White Fang and his mother roamed the land in search of food until his mother died. Then an Indian takes him in as his master. By hitting White Fang if he misbehaved or by giving him a treat as a reward made him a well behaved dog. Then his Indian master sells White Fang to the bully Beauty Smith. Beauty Smith turns White Fang into a vicious killer. White Fang soon learns to fight in pit fights for Beauty Smith's benefit. Will White Fang ever have another caring master or will he die a fierce deadly killer. This book is kind of graphic for a child under 10 years of age.
