Summary: An entertaining thriller.
Review: Bike messenger Jace Damon has one last pick-up for the night, unfortunately it may be the last pick-up of his life.

Jace has to deliver a package for Lenny Lowell, a sleazy defense attorney in the middle of a high-profile murder case involving a Hollywood star. But, en route to delivering the package, he is almost run down by a car, chased through alleyways and shot at. Jace realizes there is something worth killing for in this package so he decides to return to Lenny's office only to find the office ransacked and Lenny dead.

Now on the run, Jace must fight for his life as the police believe he's a suspect and a killer wants him dead.

'Kill the Messenger' is an exciting read, while different from previous novels by Tami Hoag; the novel is suspenseful and the ending packs a nice surprise, but the usual dark tone is missing. This novel is a lighter thriller that entertains from first page to last, but might disappoint long-time fans. However, 'Kill the Messenger' is a much better novel than Ms. Hoag's last novel and based on the strength of her name alone the book should fly up the bestseller lists.

An entertaining summer read.

Summary: A good read
Review: I had hoped for a little more romance in this Tami Hoag novel. In DARK HORSE we had to use our imaginations alittle. But there were sparks between Estes and Landry. In this one, it didn't end right.

This is a great thriller/suspense adventure. But the romance, what little there is, leaves you unsettled. As I have said I like books that leave me with a cozy warm feeling. This one does not. It feels as though Hoag writes without any trust in men. Her women characters seem to feel that there are few, if any, good men out there.

The plot and characters are crisp and well defined. I liked Parker and the secondary characters were very motivated. The only thing left out was a good romance. With a happy ending.

The ending is totally unexpected and left me with a vague sense of dissatisfaction.

However no one does suspense like Hoag and that remains so in this novel.

Summary: Not Tami Hoag's best effort
Review: I have been a fan of Tami Hoag since "Lucky's Lady," and I must say that her last three books have been a disappointment to me.
"Kill the Messenger" is a good story, with a viable plot, however the character development I have come to expect from Ms. Hoag is severely lacking. I cannot go into detail because that would give away the ending. I feel that you never really got to know detective Kev Parker - if this had been one of her earlier efforts, she would have developed his character more on the line of her Jack Boudreaux or Nick Fourcade characters. None of the characters, except perhaps Jace, are developed enough so you can really connect with them, and for me, personally, that is what drives a good story. She should have spent more time on the characters and a little less time on describing L.A. over and over.
I feel in Ms. Hoag's last few efforts she is rushing through the stories and letting the fact that she has a few solid novels behind her lead her to less-than-her-best efforts.
I should have waited for the paperback version. Buying this book in hardcover was a waste of the $25.00 in today's tough economic times.

Summary: Foul language obliterates plot
Review: I have read and enjoyed all of Hoag's novels--until Kill the Messenger. The vulgur language and crude descriptions of characters really spoiled this book for me. I got through the first 100 pages, wincing and cringing as I read, and then took the book back. Tami, you can do it without all that vulgarity. It is really a turnoff!

Summary: the best yet
Review: I was not a fan of this author's early books, which read like B grade movies. This novel is her best by far and takes the author to another level. The story was complex but realistic, with enough turns and twists to keep you guessing but not to overwhelm you. The characters were all believable and people I cared enough about to keep me engaged. The ultimate motive for all the turmoil was a bit weak but that didn't stop me from enjoying the book and recommending it highly.

Summary: Just try and put this one down!
Review: I've enjoyed Tami Hoag's books since I picked up Night Sins on a whim several years ago. Her last book was my least favorite. So when Kill The Messenger came out I wwas a little leary of it. But I did get it and, boy, is it worth the money! Some of the other reviews have said that the characters were unreal. I do agree that Parker is not all that realistic, but come on. He is a fictional detective. And someone complained about the ending. I liked the ending! It was a total surprise. I didn't see it coming.
The book is incredibly fast paced and once you start reading you won't be able to put the book down.

Summary: Glitz, Grime and Crime in LA
Review: Kill the Messenger is a cleverly-constructed page-turner with a nicely twisted plot. It can also boast unusually well-written action scenes, and a keen fashion sense (both Parker and Ruiz are suspiciously well dressed - the former in designer trenchcoat and fedora, the latter in low-cut suits and Jimmy Choo stilettos). On top of this, it paints a darkly fascinating picture of life in L.A., depicting it as a little world where the urge to be a star has infected even the police and lawyers. Almost everyone is a smart-ass, speaking in carefully scripted one-liners; Robbery-Homicide Detectives seem to be selected as much for their ability to look good on the news as for any investigative ability; people co-operate with cops more out of the desire to appear on America's Most Wanted than out of any interest in justice.

Hoag has obviously had fun creating her characters, from Parker and Jace down to bit players such as Obidia Jones, the homeless man who identifies the killer. Even the walk-ons are well-drawn and interesting, and most are easy to like, if not to trust. A few - Jace, his brother Tyler, their landlady Madame Chen, Jace's workmates Mojo and `Eta' Fitzgerald - care more about other people than money or image. There are some good cops in Hoag's understaffed LAPD, and Parker may have learned enough from his earlier mistakes to have become one of them.

Kill the Messenger is fast-paced and fun and hard to put down. Read it before some Hollywood film-maker turns it into a star vehicle.

Summary: A Riveting Police Procedural
Review: Ms Hoag...at her entertaining best. This well written story intrigued me at page one and took me on an enjoyable, page turning ride. Det Parker and the Damon brothers were inspirational characters you care about from first introduction. The sad senseless killing (especially Eta), shocking revelation (I didn't see coming), and the perfect ending made this story a big winner for me. I loved it and highly recommend this compelling read.

Excellent mystery with great "red herrings". Highly recommend.
