Rating: Summary: Husband's Helpful Handbook! Review: Have you read any 'feel good' books lately? Then read this one! I would recommend this book to every husband in America. Ronald Reagan reminds us through the cherished notes and letters he wrote to Nancy through their years together, of how a husband is supposed to treat his wife. This book leaves no doubt to the devotion and adoration shared by the former first couple. See inside the heart of the Great Communicator. Some of it is silly, catching moments of playful teasing, while others are hard core serious devotion to the woman Ronald Reagan truly adores. As you read through the pages of this book, you will discover yourself smiling incessantly. A light read with just under 200 pages, with a collections of photos, telegrams, cards and letters from Ronnie to Nancy. The book is prefaced by Nancy Reagan. This book serves to remind us not to be too busy to take to let our loved ones know what they mean to us. After all, if the President can make time to do that, can't the rest of us? Husbands, read this book and learn from it before your wife reads it and wishes you were more like Ronnie!
Rating: Summary: Reading some of the rotten reviews has really Review: made me mad. But whereas I might get mad or Nancy would be furious, Ronnie would laugh it off as "they're just having a bad day." This was the type of marriage we hope for, dream about, talk about. It is the kind most kids want to see from their parents, the type parents desire for their children, one where they are newlyweds for 50 years. Patti Davis said she knows her father loved his children but when Nancy walked into the room, there was no one else. Just perfect!! These letters reveal a man helplessly and deeply in love with all his heart. If this is corny or childish, so be it. The world would be a better place if relationships could be this strong. He says it over and over, "You are my life, you saved my soul." The President could wax poetic and plumb the depth of emotions, something few ever manage. The letters were not only loving and tender but also erudite, witty, colorful and quite original. (My favorites are those written in the same room or those in which he refers to himself in the third person.) This is perhaps one of the best personal portraits of an American President that exist. The letters range over a period of several years and contain some biographical data. Just to set the record straight, the proceeds from this book went to an Alzheimer's fund; the family received not one penny.
Rating: Summary: I Love You, Ronnie Review: Ronnald Reagan a man we will all remember and now even more through his letters saved my his loving wife Nancy. He knew what it took to put love into the country and love between he and his wife. The letters say it all, he was truely a man like each of us yet a man that put all his love into the country and his wife. A must read -Larry Hobson Author-"The Day Of The Rose"
Rating: Summary: GREAT LOVE STORY Review: seldom read books written by celebrities as too often they are only self serving pap. HOWEVER, this is one of the greatest love stories of all times. Hard to imagine that a man who led such a busy life would find the time, inclination and energy to put his thoughts in writing. A greater gift I can't imagine. The thoughts that occurred to me were the minor things that made him and Nancy so happy with each other and with themselves. My husband was in the Air Force and was gone a lot and was constantly in touch with me either by phone or letter so I know how much it means to have someone thinking of you even when they are so busy and so far away.Thank you Nancy for sharing these intimate parts of your life with us. You have a wonderful husband and I am so sorry you have lost him. But in his own way somehow I know he is still communicating with you.
Rating: Summary: What love! What devotion! Truly sweet and sincere ... Review: Sweet and sincere best describe this lovely collection of love letters from Ronald Reagan to Nancy Reagan. The media seemed to show that Nancy Reagan was a control freak and overbearing during The White House years, this book tells another story. The story is of a man and a woman deeply in love and totally committed to one another. What impressed me most was the sweetness and the vulnerability of this once very powerful man. Many of the letters have been scanned from the original copies so you get a real taste of the time and the personality of Ronald Reagan. The letterhead is often from various places and penned in his own handwriting. These letters show his most private and personal feelings of loving his wife and just how much she meant to him. You also get some insight into his sense of humor and in his ability to love and express love. I was charmed by the feeling that he never took his position(s) in government life so seriously that he lost his true core and his true heart. At first I was a bit shocked that Nancy Reagan would share something so personal because that was not the impression I once had of her. I also wondered what was in it for her? Fame, she has, fortune? But I later learned the proceeds from this book will benefit the Alzeimers Foundation. Whatever her motivation this is a wonderful surprise of a book and a great way for her to share some really neat things about one of our ex-presidents.
Rating: Summary: A Tribute And Grand Legacy Review: There is evidently a survey done annually that asks people to rate who the greatest Presidents were to have served this Country. Number one has often been Abraham Lincoln, and he was so chosen again this year. Number two was John F. Kennedy, and number three was Ronald Reagan. I have always been a great admirer of the man, but I never had strong impressions about his wife. This collection of memories by Former First Lady Nancy Reagan entitled, "I Love You Ronnie", portrays Mr. Reagan as one might expect. Of greater interest was what can be learned about this Country's Former First Lady. You do not have to read very far into this book of letters and recollections to understand that their marriage was unique. The bond between them reads more like a fairly tale, and that makes the truth of it all the more unusual. Their story of course has been heading toward its end through the tragedy of Alzheimer's, however even this trial was shared publicly for the benefit it may bring. This book as well will benefit The Alzheimer's Foundation as well as The Presidential Library Of Mr. Reagan. The last fact is important as it clears the air as to the suggestion this book was written for profit and personal wealth for Mr. And Mrs. Reagan. Mrs. Reagan was often portrayed as a woman who was impossible to get along with, an interference, and a borderline head case when she was alleged to have sought the advice of an astrologer regarding her husband's activities. Her decisions become clearer even if you do not share her belief in the methods she may have consulted, and to why she conducted herself the way she did. This is a couple of nearly 50 years who would write notes to each other when they were only across the room. This is a couple that was as excited about being together decade after decade as they were in the opening days of their initial romance. Their relationship is so lengthy and intense it could almost be called symbiotic. Three months after he becomes President he is shot and very nearly dies. She would later have Cancer, and he would deal with Cancer not once but twice in his administration. They always shared these personal travails with the public in the hope it would help others. They had a special respect for, and a relationship with The American People. Going on National television and telling the Nation mind your own business would not have occurred to this President. The book is also helpful in gaining an insight as to how he evolved via his relationship with General Electric, from a spokesperson for them, to a man that became first the Governor of California, and then the President, twice. Much of what Mrs. Reagan has to say would be dismissed out of hand by more "modern" First Ladies. How she viewed her responsibilities are for readers to judge. For readers who were around and aware of Mr. Reagan's years in office, you will remember they were not perfect, no administration ever has been. But after only a very short time as measured by History, this Country's citizens recall him as one of the finest. Americans remember what they felt like when he spoke, how he took us out from the "Malaise" of the self-described Carter Presidency, and made this Country once again feel good about what and who we were/are. Mrs. Reagan clearly contributed to the success of her Husband, and by extension to his Presidency and all of us. This was a man who would not remove his jacket when in the oval office out of respect for the History the room and his predecessors represented. Whether you like the man and his wife or not, an objective review of how they conducted their White House Years will stand as well as any in our Nation's History, and perhaps put into perspective just how atrocious the Conduct of Mr. Clinton, and the presumption of Mrs. Clinton were. The Presidency is about a great many things, many ideals, and many lofty goals that may never be reached. A Great President and First Lady add to the legacy of other great First Couples before them. They never disgraced the office, themselves, or their Country, by turning the home of the President into a front page National Enquirer Joke. To learn why this was never even a possibility, read the book.
Rating: Summary: Touching. Review: To all you Reagan-haters (especially those who have savaged Nancy, and think her to be a shrew), read this and weep. I have always admired Ronald Reagan's clear, steadfast ideology and fine-tuned political instincts, and Mrs. Reagan's book of his love letters adds to his stature in my eyes. After reading his letters spanning 40 years, I was almost a little steamed at RR...he's spoiled it for all us husbands for all time! What man could ever live up his example? He reveals himself to be clever, inventive, charming, and totally smitten with Nancy. She comes off well, too, if only because any woman who inspires this level of devotion must be a person of great worth. Once you read this book, you cannot ever doubt that it was he (and he alone) who wrote the moving letter about his Alzheimer's affliction to the American people in 1994. Through it all, Reagan comes through as a man who is completely at ease with himself and one who has his priorities straight. Such devotion and love! A political side note -- I doubt we'll ever see such a book penned by the present First Lady!
Rating: Summary: A truly classic couple! Review: Very touching and emotional. I voted for Reagan twice, and if I'd know that he was such a sensitive man, I would have voted much more than that. I enjoyed the letters from his Hollywood days best, because they showed a young man with bright optimism, and because I'm a sucker for anything from Hollywood's Golden Age (and finally because 'Knute Rockne, All American' is one of my favourite films; "Win one for the Gipper!"). This period also dealt with his experiences as head of the actor's union, a great precursor to his headier political endeavors, and the beginning of his romance with Nancy. The most heart-wrenching parts, though, are Nancy's commentary. She has an amazing ability to get past her fears about Ronnie's current illness, and talk openly about what she was feeling the first time she read these letters (that alone makes this a truly courageous book). In doing so, she creates a powerful central theme: memory and its ability to create and destroy the past.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful Glimpse into the Private Life of Ronald Reagan Review: What a warm, touching tribute to our late President from his wife! The letters lovingly saved by Nancy Reagan show us a portrait of a genuine, down-to-earth man. I just finished reading this book for the second time, (it's a very quick read), and I was reminded how much I enjoyed the book. Mr. Reagan's integrity, charm, and sense of humor are clearly evident in every letter and "doodle" in the book. More than half of the letters are from the period before Reagan entered politics. For several years, Reagan was the host of the General Electric Theatre and spent huge amounts of time travelling the country to promote the show. The letters from this period are particularly poignant. Thank you so much, Nancy Reagan, for sharing your treasures in this lovely book.
