Rating: Summary: A Lot Better Then The Movie Review: I just finished Clear and Present Danger and all I can is, WOW. This was my first Clancy novel, but it won't be my last. What I liked the most about it was, the character development of Red, Clark and Ding. All three of of these characters play major roles in the plot of the story. As for Jack Ryan, I really felt he was a supporting character in this(he wasn't really, it just felt that way). The reason is because the other characters were so interesting you wanted to know more about them. And of course you knew that Ryan would make it( he is the star of the series, after all). Please don't go by the plot of the movie, the book is much better and a lot different. And I really liked the movie!... But the movie only tells only part of the story, also the ending is made up. Read the book!...
Rating: Summary: Great page turner! Review: I truly enjoyed this book. I wasn't the normal Clancy book where Ryan's the main character and Clark is second to him. They seemed about equal with a lot from Chavez. This book focuses on a main issue in this country and how we should not handle it. Cutter made some bad decisions and in the end paid for them dearly. The best of them I've read so far.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Action Adventure Review: The President has declared an unofficial war on the Columbian drug lords. The CIA, using both conventional and unconventional forces led in large part by the mysterious Mr. Clark, begins a campaign which meets with stunning success. Unfortunately, the war is being waged without the informed consent of Congress, and when disclosure becomes a possibility, the ground forces are abandoned for the sake of deniability.A very entertaining and action filled novel, and similar to Without Remorse, this war is waged against a clever but wholly unsympathetic enemy.
Rating: Summary: ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ....... Review: This book is long, man. This book took me awhile to get into. After I did, I finally finished it. Great plot, good dialogue, tons o' cussing, good action. This is definitely a good book for hardcore or beginners.
Rating: Summary: A very entertaining story Review: Clear and Present Danger is another fast paced Clancy thriller. Although I didn't feel it was as good as some of his others, it wasn't far behind. What I really liked about this book was the introduction to Domingo Chavez's character as a seargent in the U.S. Army. Also, in this book the reader sees the first meetings John Clark has with Jack Ryan and Domingo Chavez and it's interesting to watch these first interactions take place. Although this is a Jack Ryan novel it takes quite a while for his character to appear and even longer for him to start becoming important to the story, but the story is interesting even before this takes place. Like many people, I really like the character of Jack Ryan. I think his character is so appealing because he's an honest guy just trying to do the right thing in a world full of dishonest people with their own hidden agendas. This story just adds to that appealing image. I think what helps make Clancy's stories so good is the fact that there isn't always a clear line between right and wrong and you see the "good guys" sometimes make decisions that aren't completely noble. This isn't so much characteristic of Jack Ryan, but more so of John Clark and Domingo Chavez in this novel and in others. Because of this the reader is forced to weigh the clearly good actions of characters with their less than admirable actions and make their own judgments about each character. In Clear and Present Danger a covert military operation goes underway to considerably hamper the activities of the drug cartel in Colombia, but it's legality is called into question.(This mission is set in motion before the murder of important U.S. diplomats though the description on the back of the novel misleads readers into thinking this mission is a result of those deaths). As this covert mission takes place characters are forced to weigh the law with justice as the two aren't always one and the same and this is what makes the novel so interesting. In the end, Clear and Present Danger is a very interesting novel worth reading for the interesting plot and if you're a fan of Ryan, Clark, Chavez or all of the above. It's definitely worth reading for any true Clancy fan.
Rating: Summary: Clearly one of Clancy's best! Review: Clear and Present Danger happens to be one of my favorite Clancy novels (second only to Without Remorse). Clear and Present Danger is very fast paced. It seems to scramble your brain with the seemingly endless story lines but that makes it all the more gripping. I am a huge fan of John Clark and especially love this story because it is where he meets Chavez for the first time. Jack Ryan has been promoted to deputy director of the CIA only to be left out of the loop and left with a huge coverup that has stranded American soldiers in a hostile land. Jack makes it his mission to get those men back and doesn't care who he crosses to facilitate their return. Unfortunately, Jack's mentor, Admiral Greer passes away midway through this story, so for the most part Jack is on his own, but he makes the right choices and ultimately saves the day. He didn't get the nickname of Boyscout for nothing! I think you'll really enjoy this book, especially if your a Tom Clancy fan. I don't suggest seeing the movie first, you might be turned off. It doesn't exactly follow the storyline of the book and the movie character of John Clark really is appauling. I also suggest reading Cardinal of the Kremlin and Without Remorse. You won't be sorry!!
Rating: Summary: Still a great story. Review: This is not his best book but still worth a look.It is still a great story. Not superior. Ryan is up to his neck in trouble. A great ending.
Rating: Summary: Clancy does it again! Review: Mr. Clancy further proves why he is the best in this genre with Clear and Present Danger. I read it once, and just recently read it again. The book starts off with some Pirates(who in fact work for some drug dealers) doing some very bad and nasty things to a family on the boat. The President notices, and declares the drug lords a 'clear and present danger to the national security of the united states' thus begging the opening to the whole plot line. In this book we meet Domingo Chavez, who will later have parts in Rainbow six and Debt of Honor. This, like all other Tom Clancy books has a well devopled story line and several plots ongoing throughout the novel. I recemend this book to any Clancy Fan.
Rating: Summary: Another Excellent Book From Clancy Review: I continue to think that Clancy is a quality author and I will read anything he (not the team) writes. This is no exception. The one thing I liked is that the government was doing something that showed some mocxy, I mean they were putting their foot down. You get everything you expect from one of his books, great characters with a lot of development, a strong story line, many sub plots that come together in the end and details ' lots of details about weapons, tactics and anything else guys like to talk or read about.
Rating: Summary: Solid Action/Adventure Story about the War on Drugs Review: This book is perhaps my favorite after the Hunt for Red October. It involves the President declaring an unofficial war on the drug dealers on Central America. He sends in a covert military force to find drug lords and their operations and destroy them. This leads to some very well written combat scenes, as well as an excellent picture of the covert forces that our military has. This book introduces Ding Chavez, a later friend and close co-worker of Mr. Clark, who is also featured prominently in this story. Of particular interest in this novel is the meeting between Jack Ryan and Mr. Clark. Very well written. As to the movie that bears this name, this book is infinitely better and much much different. There isn't any attempt at political correctness or saying that the President has exceeded his authority in starting the war. He didn't, and the book explains the powers of the President very well. Also, the movie took out two of the best sequences in the book and one of its most memorable characters. The Coast Guard vessel captained by Red Weggner. In the movie, there are two drug runners arrested in the Gulf of Mexico by a Coast Guard ship. But in the book, this scene is expanded and includes a mock trial and faked execution of one of the drug runners in order to get the other one to talk. It's fantastic reading. And then, at the end of the novel, Red Weggner and his boys return to rescue Jack Ryan and company in the middle of a hurricane. They totally ignored this ending, going for the politically correct ending instead, which was a huge disappointment (Tom Clancy himself was very upset by this and vowed that no one would be allowed to make any books of his into movies again). If you want to know the real story, read this book. Run as fast as you can away from that movie that poses as a Jack Ryan story. It's not. This book is.
