Summary: We all must make choices in life....This book is a must read
Review: I have a view of both sides here - with my first child I worked full time from the time he was 8 weeks old. With my second I am a work from home - maybe 10 hours a week - mom. I know that for me and my children my decision was the best. For some they just don't have the option financially or emotionally. It's certainly not the best decision for everyone. But this book clearly weighs in with the pros and cons.

If you feel like no one can relate to the struggles you are in as a working mom - you must read this book. Trust me we CAN relate. We've been there and done that!!!

I especially like the bit about leaving the kids home alone so she could run to work really quick to complete a project.......Don't we all pull up in front of the store and say "Man I really just need this one thing....can't I just leave them here for a minute while I run in and out?!" But no we lug out the double stroller strap in the kicking and screaming two year old and ultimately end up balancing the newborn while we navigate the unnavigable stroller through the aisles of the store only to find that one item is out of stock and we have to do it all over again tomorrow!!!!

Trust me this book is a must read!! I have recommended it to all my friends who have kids, are pregnant or are thinking about getting pregnant. Being a "Career" Mommy is hard work!! And Kate knows all about it!!!

Summary: A UK perspective
Review: This is a book about a London mother and all the reviewers so far are from the USA and have given their USA perspective. I found this book very believable. I am a mother of four with a job in publishing and am familiar with the juggling act between work and children and the with the "Muffia". I also found the bits about choosing a school for Emily very realistic.

But as a mother who works mainly from home I am in full sympathy with the ending. If you are a mother your place IS with your children until they are old enough not to need you so much and I am pleased that this book has put this message across.

Summary: I Can Relate!!!
Review: A co-worker of mine gave it to me as a birthday present, and I couldn't put it down! I've shared it with other friends who juggle the Mom-corporate career world, and everyone's loved it. There were so many neurotic thoughts by Kate with which I could identify (and some that made me feel better, thinking "Well, I'm not THAT bad!"). A must-read for the working mom!

Summary: in what decade?
Review: First, no hedge fund manager rolls into work at 9am. More like 6am. Second, no hedge fund manager takes zero for a bonus -- a severance check in lieu of a bonus, but not zero. Third, she goes on vacation for TWO WEEKS? How? Fourth, after returning from a two week vacation, she has only 70 emails -- only if she'd cleaned them out every day of vacation and from home the morning before returning to work. I thoroughly dislike books that can't get the basic attributes of a profession even close to correct.

On her role as "mother", what school allows home-made treats? These days, it must be commercially prepared and in a sealed container. Second, the kid's hair got cut, and will grow back, who cares if the nanny went with a different style? It's not like she got the kid a tattoo!

I could go on, but knowing that at the end she trades it all in...how can this book be anything but depressing for those who choose or must work? She joins in with the brainwashed in believing and perpetuating the myth that mommy and kiddies all at home together is the situation that is best for everyone.

Summary: A woman with more than 2 hands!
Review: Katy Reddy defines the working mother in today's world! Being a working mother myself, this book was hard to escape with in the beginning. After a day at the stressful office and then coming home to read the first two chapters, I felt so overwhelmed with Katy's e-mails & to-do lists I could only stop to create my own to-do list's and respond to my own very full e-mail in-box. However, I continued on and after getting to know this working mother a little more, I learned to feel relaxed while reading, regardless of all of the stress that Katy was experiencing. I also found the British humor hilarious and found myself laughing out loud on several occasions. I think this book proves that it's near impossible to have it all. Thanks to a friend for purchasing this great gift for my BIRTHDAY!

Summary: Couldn't put it down
Review: And I missed the main character after I was done reading. I described it to friends as Bridget Jones Becomes a Mom. What a terrific read! Hilariously funny!

Summary: Laugh-out-loud entertaining!
Review: Although sometimes hard to sympathize with Kate Reddy, still a fun read and probably too true to life for many. Very funny moments in this one! Will definitely look up any additional offerings from this author.

Summary: Poignant as well as funny
Review: The book is indeed a poignant story of a working Mom who tries everything under the sun to make her family happy. It starts off very funny but slowly evolves into a poignant tale. The author, Allison Pearson, has a talent for story-telling and has done a wonderful job in just her first book. Definitely worth owning!

Summary: Loved this book
Review: I really enjoyed this book. I read the review in the NY Times and went right out to the bookstore to purchase it. I could really relate to Kate getting treats together for the class at 2AM in the morning (although that's usually when I'm doing laundry!) The only thing that disappointed me was how conveniently it all ended .... house in the country.. new job. Most of us are still struggling in that full-time world.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Don't know how she did it!
Review: Allison Pearson's first novel is FANTASTIC. You won't be able to put it down. I think it's one of the best books I've ever read, and I'm a fairly tough critic (although, in fairness, I probably just don't review the stuff I think is lousy). She captures the madness of working motherhood and marriage, and is a very very funny writer, with a great ear for dialogue and eye for scene. There's one episode in the book, where Kate is reading something, that will move you to tears, I'm sure, so have the Kleenex handy, but otherwise, be prepared to laugh and nod a lot. Enjoy!
