Rating: Summary: Waiting for the "no he didn't"........ Review: I must say that I was somewhat disappointed the "A Love of My Own". In all of E.Lynn Harris' other books, there were fireworks from beginning to end. This one started out with pop, fizzled in the middle and ended with a bang. For those of you who are first time readers of E. Lynn Harris and aren't totally hooked, pick up "Invisible Life" and start from the beginning. Usually I can't get through a chapter without calling a girlfriend who's also reading to say "No, he didn't......", but this time a got through it without much discussion. Maybe his characters are aging a little and trying to eliminate the drama in their lives, but the drama sells. Can't wait for the next one.....Lots of love to you E.Lynn.
Rating: Summary: Thanks for bringing Raymond Back Review: Thank you for giving us the opportunity to see what's going on in Raymond's world. To me, he's the best character. I think he is very dimensional and intriguing. He not predictible like -- Basil. I guess since I was curious about Raymond since he was the focus of the first novel and we've seen him "grow up". Keep up the great work and thanks for all of the creative marketing tools you use. They really work and I love my calendar!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: He Did it Again Review: All I can say, is "When is the next book coming out?". E. Lynn Harris again has not let me down with his new book.
Rating: Summary: Another winner from E.Lynn Review: E.Lynn Harris has brought us another winning novel with A Love of My Own, the latest of his popular books. A Love of My Own is a definate page-turner from beginning to end with many twists and turns that will truly captivate readers alike. We are reintroduced to Raymond Tyler who ventures back to NYC to assume the role as CEO for Bling Bling, a popular hip-hop magazine for young African-Americans. As he attempts to adjust to the recent changes surrounding him, he fights to work through the pains of the past along with dealing with the return of John Basil Henderson into his life. Zola Denise Norwood, Bling Bling's editor-in-chief has experienced great success with the magazine but despite the triumphs and struggles that she has faced in her heart she yearns for so much more. As time passes, each is own their own journey to find the element that will truly make them complete-a love that they can truly call their own. Set against the backdrop of NYC during the events of 9/11, Aaliyah's death, and Oscar night (Halle and Denzel's victories), E.Lynn once again presents us with vivid imagery, relatable chracters, and twists that will keep readers turning pages. E.Lynn continues raise the bar with the arrival of each new book and A Love of My Own clearly shows that E.Lynn is still at the top of the literary world.
Rating: Summary: E. Lynn, I'm a bit disappointed! Review: E. Lynn, where is the fire, the passion, that special something that you've delivered to us in the past? I'm bout'tired of Ava and Yancey. Raymond needs to get a real life. Can't we say good-bye to Basil? But I still love you E. Lynn!
Rating: Summary: Good Finish to a great series Review: E.Lynn has done it again!!(Wonder what that E stands for?) Anyway, I just had to write and say that I enjoyed this latest offering. See, the other novels, Basil was still slinging but not coming to terms with his business. And I am so glad that he did it here in this book. Ava got what she deserves, and Yancey B. is still that spoiled exacting heifer as before. I really thought she had learned her lesson in the last book, but I guess old habits die hard. Another thing I liked about the book is that it kept in keeping with all of the events that happened(9/11, and the historic Oscars). Couldn't well ignore it. A great ending to a great series. Oh, let me mention Zola. Ok, she was another of those gals that just had to have it her way, but you couldn't help but like her no matter what. The stuff that went down between her and Yancey B, was true, pure unadulterated diva stuff.
Rating: Summary: E. Lynn Hype! Review: I've got about three more pages to go with this book, but feel that I am qualifed to review it. I'm actually reading this for a book club and never had a desire to really read an E. Lynn Harris book. Not an affront to the author, I just didn't have the desire to read one of his books. And I can't actually say I'm going to go and read one again. Although a quick read, I found a number of things wrong with this book. It's commendable how Mr Harris attempted to interweave real-life events (the death of Aaliyah and the 9/11 tragedy) within this fictional story, but this became really ridiculous in the face of the preposterous climax and some of the other ridiculous plot lines throughout the book. The whole Yancy B story was just...dumb and unbelievable. And Davis McClinton's story was ridiculous, too. Raymond Tyler seems like a totally cardboard character. Nice and so-called good looking, with the light skin and green eyes we were constantly reminded of (so annoying...are we still into that?). Perhaps he has more depth in the other books - it doesn't really matter 'cause I'm not even going to bother finding out. Zola, despite her 'savvy and attitude' just doesn't seem like a real woman. Not to say that there aren't gorgeous, talented, successful sistahs out there...she just could've been better written, imo. She was hard to sympathize with because she was such a slut who used her body to get what she wanted in the first place. Could she not see the ramifications of that? It was nice to read Mr. Harris's acknowledgements in the beginning of the book, and I can totally understand his desire to pay tribute to the lovely and talented (and dearly missed!) Aaliyah Haughton, Halle Berry, and other real-life successful African Americans. However, it took away from them to be all interwoven with trifling plots. When are we going to get out of that? I'm still searching for some fiction by African-American authors that'll stop my eyes from rolling to the back of my head.
Rating: Summary: A Love of My Own Review: While enjoying previous novels of E. Lynn Harris - Invisible Life - Just As I Am, I was very disappointed with A Love of My Own. Why was there a need for several characters from the past to make cameo appearances? I have always enjoyed reading his novel's in one night. To say the least this is one I continued to pick up and put back down - I found it boring and not as exciting as other novels. I hope his next one will be more satisfying.
Rating: Summary: Like Old Friends Review: Raymond and Basil are like old friends and it was good to read about them once again. Unlike the two previous novels, this one contained better character and story development, and was well worth the hardcover price. With that said, I definately recommend E. Lynn's newest novel. You wont' be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: A Disappointment of My Own Review: As a long time fan of the works of E. Lynn Harris, I must say I am throughly disappointed. The thready, weak plots were satiated with predictability; the novel (in its entirety) lacked realism. Previously introduced characters existed to no purpose, and brought no identifiable edge to the story. The new characters proved to be shallow and uninteresting. A futile attempt at rehashing sad, real-life events (9/11, Aaliyah's death) left me ultimately bored and a bit puzzled at their ill-placed presence in the story. The "hurried" appeal of the writing style suggests the lack of thought and effort denoted to the compilation of such a farce. The novel leaves much to be desired in comparison to Mr. Harris's previous novels. To the even remotely interested: Proceed with lowered expectations. Better yet, it wouldn't be a bad idea to just wait for its paperback release. This novel will wreak havoc on the inquisitive mind in search of true literary entertainment.
