Rating: Summary: A New Idea of His Own: A Reader's Suggestion Review: I am beyond disappointed at E. Lynn Harris' current offering. Once again we take a peek inside the lives of the same old characters. Although we love Basil and Raymond, isn't it time to move on?? This book could have been very enjoyable had it not been for the underdeveloped storylines tossed about as if the reader was expected to figure out the balance of what the author was attempting to parlay. The subject matter appears to have been rushed and one was left wondering what the title really had to do with the information contained within. The overdrawn references to the untimely death of R&B singer Aaliyah and the tragedy of 9/11 felt like so much padding that again, one was distracted from the possibility of being even slightly entertained by what should have been a fun read. My first inclination upon completing this "novel" was to return the book for a full refund. For such a talented writer, E. Lynn Harris certainly misses the mark with this one. Perhaps more time in between books would allow Mr. Harris the opportunity to develop new characters and storylines and thereby give to his readers the quality they have come to expect.
Rating: Summary: I really am a big fan of E.Lynn Harris but.. Review: I thought this book would be all of that and then some..I am sorry to say that I was thoroughly disappointed..I felt that the character's didn't have any depth..Davis for example, what was the point of him being in the book? I am getting a little weary of reading the drama between Raymond and Basil. I feel those two characters have run their course. I think that it is time to develope new characters and new story lines, enough with the soap opera drama!!. When I saw that E. Lynn Harris had a new book out, I was surprised.. I thought that it would be at least another year before he wrote and released another book. After reading this, I felt that he should have. He should have taken the time to write about something else and develope new characters and plot and etc. I would have waited. I would not have forgotten him.!!! If an author is talented and can get his point across in an entertaining and intelligent manner, I will wait for his books and buy them in hard back and not wait for the books to come out in paperback. There shouldn't be any just cause to release a book each and every year to prove that you are commercial. I for one am tired of reading books by African American authors that have me spending my hard earned money and leaving me very disappointed in the end.
Rating: Summary: In a word - Awesome! Review: E.Lynn once gain provides his readers with an exciting novel. I read "A Love of My Own" on the beach in Miami over a two (2) day period! I could not put the book down. A much anticipated follow up to his series proved to be worth the wait. Raymond returns, grounded, confident and just perfect in the many roles he plays as he interacts with Zola (loved her! professional, home-girl, and down right genuine sista!) Mr. Davis and his ex.! Ah-ha! I am so glad Ava got hers! Keep it up, E. Lynn, Iyou've got yourself a fan for life. Ciao! Trinice Speight-Moses SWAP- Sisters with a Purpose Bookclub Willingboro, New Jersey
Rating: Summary: IT GOT BETTER,FINALLY! Review: I finally finished the book. I must say the ending was pretty good.
Rating: Summary: You showed out E Lynn Review: I could not wait to read this book, because I love all of E Lynn's work. Raymond has always been one of my favorite characters from the past I love the type of character he is and what he represents in a relationship. Ok its about time that he and Trent went there separate ways he was too good for Trent. I've always known that Basil would finally come out of that closet that he was struggling with. I've always felt that Raymond was the only man that could handle Basil and all of his tatics and compete with him on every level. But also Basil has always known that he could not have Raymond in the closet and that he would have to step out and up to the plate if he want to be in a real relationship with Raymond and it happened. So E Lynn what do you have in store for us next. Yancy is still the diva that she has always been and Ava is still crazy write her out for good. This new character Zola she was pretty cool I like the whole persona about her. I'm really glad that things went that way with her. I was puzzled on one thing about her, when you went home who did she see in that airport to make her turn around. I guess I missed something. Davis McClinton was a plum fool from beginning to end. I can't wait and you did a wonderful, wonderful job with this one.
Rating: Summary: WHEN IS IT GOING TO GET GOOD? Review: Am I missing something? Or do I just need to be more patient? Mr. Harris' books are normally too good to put down from beginning to end. It usually takes me no more than two days to read his books. I'm currently in the middle and have yet to find out what everyone is raving about. The only reason I continue to read this book is because I know it just has to get better than this! We will see....
Rating: Summary: I Feel A Little Let Down Review: I must say that I do enjoy Mr. Harris as an author, but this story was like a good cooked meal that was missing "the soul food seasoning". To be honest I can not quite put my finger on what's missing, but I definitely have to say that he needed to upstage Basil in the story. Let Basil chose what he is going to be homosexual, heterosexual or just bi-sexual. I know that confusion maybe realistic but for a book the confusion gets a little tiring. The humor in the book was funny, I found myself laughing out loud at the characters' inner voices and the cracks that they made on each other. I know if you're a true E. Lynn Harris fan you are going to read this book, but please don't expect the formula that he had in the beginning. Even though I feel a little let down with his last work I still got love for him.
Rating: Summary: Impressed... Review: I was definitely impressed. When I worked at Border's, one of our jobs was to recommend books. I never read nor heard of E. Lynn Harris but apparently every one else had when I asked them about him. The first lady I recommended the book to asked me did I read it. I said "no". She asked me why did I recommend it then. I said "Everyone else seems so excited about the new book." So I read it. Man, why haven't I read all the rest? The only weak points was the two times in dialogue when people started talking like books (ex: Don't I look and sound fabulous). People don't really talk like that with the "and" in the middle.) They also don't usually have phone conversations where they explain initials to companies while they're half sleep. The book started off a little "official" but once it got moving I was not putting it down. It had wonderful humor, great dialogue, amusing characters, and just a fresh edge. I would recommend everybody go out and buy all the books--I know I will now! I would've loved to have went to church with Hayden, Zora, and Kai...that was some of the funniest stuff I've ever read. I know Dickey dabbled in comedy but Harris should've tried too!
Rating: Summary: Harris does it again Review: This book is bound to be another hit for Mr. Harris. The new characters and the introduction of Bling-Bling added more spice to the plot. I was hooked after the fist chapter. This book is just another masterpiece by E. Lynn Harris. If you did not think this was a great book I recommend that you read it over.
Rating: Summary: No more Review: This is my last E. Lynn Harris book. The formula has worn thin and I'm no longer entertained. I have no problem with his mentioning 9/11 and Aaliyah's death in the book. Harris's books take place in the here and now and this one is in NYC so it makes sense to mention whats going on. However, I'm was not pleased with the weak soap opera plot and the cardboard characters. If you love E. Lynn Harris then this and all the other reviews will mean nothing to you. If you haven't tried his stuff before, skip this one.
