Rating: Summary: Over it Review: Ok I'm starting to get over the same old stuff from ELH. And believe me I have been a devoted fan since his first book...he needs to give his loyal fan base much more than the seemingly formulaic crap that we've gotten lately. Don't mean to be so hard but the theme & characters are just plain tired now. We don't need to read anything else about Yancey B's old evil vindictive mom; nor about the never ending cat & mouse game between Raymond & Basil (just hook up for peet's sake!) and what was up with that weak subplot with Raymond getting shot?????The challenge for ELH is to continue to engage his loyal fan base with new fresh story lines & characters.
Rating: Summary: It's Better to Listen, than to Read! Review: I like E. Lynns books but I always have a hard time reading them. I have to listen to them. I first tried to read this story but it was a little too slow. I got the tape and it was soooo much better. It flowed nicely. I am a great reader but when it comes to his stuff I have such a hard time keeping my level of interest up. If you are the same way I would suggest that you try to listen to them. It's a better experience. I give the audio versions 5-stars...
Rating: Summary: This book is good, but could have been better Review: OK I have read ALL of his books and I will admit that I'm not totally disappointed but it could have been better. He kind of lost me with Zola and her resentment towards her sister. Then there was her friend Justine. And Basil, the one we love/hate to love/hate always has drama and I just wish for once that he would COME OUT ALREADY! The plots weren't like the ones I was used to; blackmail, shocking revelations, etc. He should have picked up where Yancey left off in the last book "Any way the wind blows" and her romance. I would have liked to see her find love again after Basil dumped her.
Rating: Summary: INTERESTING Review: I also had a hard time reading this one. Honestly I have only read 26 pages of the book it was very hard at the beginning.I had to put the book down because I was getting a headache. So I bought the cd and I really enjoyed the book. I'm giving the cd five stars.
Rating: Summary: Highly Disappointed Review: This book started out really well, seemed to start dragging towards the middle, and rushed to a extremely unrealistic conclusion in the last 5 or so chapters. Harris' protagonist was not very engaging - the reader was not drawn to her or sympathic towards her plight. In fact, most of her decisons seemed incongruent with his characterization of her as a beautiful, intelligent, sucessful businesswoman. I had really high hopes after enjoying his previous novels, but was left feeling that I'd finished a different book than the one I'd started.
Rating: Summary: Okay but not E. Lynn's best... Review: I'm a definite E. Lynn fan as I've read every book he's written. I've even attended several signings of his and find him to be absolutely charming. I usually enjoy the prose and literary weaving of E. Lynn's plots and sub-plots. And as in this story I love the characters. However I was disappointed at some of the holes in the characters and the story. For example Zola Norwood was a self-assured, gorgeous (on the inside and outside)intelligent business woman with a good handle on her desires who cried an awful lot. Every conclusion to every situation in her life resulted in a tear. It was as if there were no other ways to describe the conclusion of her emotions. Her nemesis the evil Davis McClinton had a heart and armor of inpenetrable ice until a long lost relative shows up from his past. Finally the never-ending saga of Raymond in search of a love of his own hooks up with Basil (an old favorite)and they seem to finally be comfortable with their attraction and love for one another or are they? E. Lynn does a great job of building the stories but some of the sub-plot is introduced and concluded within the last 50 pages of the book. It leaves the reader feeling rushed and feeling like some of the explanations were thrown in just to finish the book. For example Nola finds out a secret within her family that helps to explain her disdain for her sister and sister's behavior. But her reaction to this information seems incongruent with the character Mr. Harris has built. Davis McClinton has a secret, yes but by the time the secret is introduced, revealed and concluded it is almost irrelevant to the story. It would have been nice to see early on that Davis was vulnerable and his glass house could shatter at any moment. Instead we were led to believe Davis was an evil powerful man bound to stay that way and come out on top. And the sub-plots with characters we all know and love/hate, Basil and Yancey were built up tremendously only to be let down to quick, confusing and hollow conclusions. His tribute to 9/11 was heartfelt and served as the backdrop for change in a lot of people's lives but this book lacked the follow through, luster and punch we've come to know from E. Lynn.
Rating: Summary: Really Disappointed Review: A Love of My Own was a real disappoint for me. I have absolutely loved all E. Lynn's books but this one did not live up to the standards set by his previous novels. It seemed really rushed and almost as if he was trying to get it out by a certain deadline. It didn't keep me drawn into. Sorry E. Lynn, I still love you and can't wait for your next release but take your time.
Rating: Summary: Just boring and predictable. Review: Yes, Harris writes better than most African American male authors...his grammar, spelling and punctuation is good... Everything in this book is so predictable...Being a writer takes a whole lot more time and thought than being an AUTHOR. Seems like this author and most of the other... authors of late appear to copy the scripts of the...daytime soap operas, then place the scripts in novel form...Just because you have a desktop publishing system in the second vacant room at your home does NOT make you a true writer or self-published for that matter. The proof is in the poor novels like most of the ones that are written by Mr. Harris...
Rating: Summary: another winner! Review: What is E Lynn Harris secret? How does he continue to crank out such magnificent fiction? I love the way Harris has gay and straight characters mixing it up, and how sexuality never eclipses the story line. I liked Zola, but I didn't feel loads of compassion for her plight. Zola brought many of her problems on herself. And Davis' background is the makings for a new book. Keep up the great work. Mr. Harris.
Rating: Summary: Good Book, but Review: I'm ready for E. Lynn to move on and bring in new characters for the readers to become attached to. I have been reading about Raymond since his college years, he is now in his forties and he is still unhappy and struggling with his sexuality. This book was like his others. Raymond being the level headed one and Basil being... Basil. In the last few novels, there is always someone or something trying to tear down there so-called happiness, this was the same. Sadly, the story lines are becoming alittle weak, but Basil is always there to bring laughter and lust.
