Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down!!! Review: This was a wonderful book. Continuing the quest of the Jerle Shanarra. Great back story and twists and turns. This book kept me coming back. The primary villan in this book will leave you horrified and make you really think. Brooks leaves you hanging at a part where you'll be on pins and needles until the next book. There are a few elements of this book that won't work as well unless you've read the other Shnnara trilogies that Brooks has written. But it is an aweosome tail in its own right. I highly recommed it.
Rating: Summary: Great read. Can't wait for the next one in the series Review: The last wizard of the age, Walker, gathers a merry band of adventurers to find the lost gemstones of Shannara. They travel by the airship, the Jerle Shannara to the land where the gems are supposed to be only to find the Isle Witch in an airship of her own with her reptilian allies. While the battle ensues and the Jerle Shannara is taken over by the witch's reptilian force, the survivors escape including Walker. Walker knows there is more in the Castledown than just the Shannara gemstone. Hidden in a vast under-underground complex is an artificially intelligent computer, built before the apocalypse when science held reign and all the races were one. Walker wants the knowledge contained in the computer but Antrax feeds on magic to power it and ward off intruders. Walker sees that Antrax is a two edged sword and has to decide what to do about it before the Isle Witch finds him. THE VOYAGE OF THE JERLE SHANNARA: ANTRAX continues the adventures that began in THE VOYAGE OF THE JERLE SHANNARA: Isle Witch. It is a spellbinding epic even with a major flaw. The plot stops in the middle of the action, forcing the reader to buy or obtain from the library the last installment to read what happened next. There are many characters in this book that are admirable especially Ares who acts bravely in spite of being so very scared of what is in front of and behind them. Harriet Klausner
Rating: Summary: Definitely Brooks' best so far Review: Between the suspense of following each party through their different adventures, and feeling the emotions each event elicited, this book left me breathless! One of my best reading experiences EVER. I can't wait for the next one!!
Rating: Summary: The "Empire Strikes Back" of Shannara Review: This by far is the darkest and most foreboding of the Shannara novels, only the "Druid of Shannara" or the "Elf Queen of Shannara" are close. The multiple plot lines in the story Bek, Quentin, Walker, and the Ilse Witch, all have their own problems and quirks that make them all interesting, similar to the end of "Sword of Shannara", though many of these plots remain unresolved and brooding. During the these plot lines there are fights to the death, revelation, and tragedy, though beautifully written that never allow it to get boring. And finally we learn the name of the malicious being that protects the city, Antrax, and what purpose it has. The characters were always Terry Brooks strong point and the ones in this book are no exception. Many seemed to have grown-up from the "Ilse Witch" book, especially Bek. Others seem to be dynamic, and constantly change, an example would be Quentin, who's optimism soon turns to fatalism. Then others are just incredibly memorable, like the doomed Druid, Walker, and the enigmatic protector Truls Rohk. Definitely a great book, but I could not help making the connection that this book had the dark, oppressive feeling of the "Empire Strikes Back." In that story George Lucas places his characters in the worst of predicaments and Terry Brooks seems to do the same, waiting for the finale of the trilogy to resolve the problems. Terry Brooks has by no means copied Lucas, but the comparison can be made. Anyway great book for fans of Shannara, though, it will leave you hanging and anxiously waiting the third and final book.
Rating: Summary: Better than Ilse Witch, but that's not saying much Review: This book didn't feel like one long prologue like Ilse Witch, but it has the same problems that plague most of his books in the last 10 years: Predictable and never changing from the status quo. Terry didn't have much of a story to fill an entire book so there isn't a lot of action until the end and the characters spend page after page thinking. Oh I wish Bek was here? I wonder what secrets Walker is keeping from us. If only I had the elfstones? She's my sister! and so on and so on. One of the chapters ends on a cliff hanger with two characters deciding to face the Terminater/Borg monster that is chasing them. So I'm thinking, finally they'll be action in the next chapter that is devoted to this part of the plot. I was wrong. Another whole chapter is devoted to the two characters thinking and talking before finally facing the monster. Let's hope the 3rd book is better.
Rating: Summary: Absorbing Review: In this sequel to his wonderful Ilse Witch, author Terry Brooks continues the adventures of the crew of the Jerle Shannara. With the party sundered, each member must fend for him or herself. The seemingly all-powerful opponent that they face is given a name: Antrax. A creation of the Old World, it exists everywhere and nowhere at all; how can Walker defeat it? Bek confronts his sister, but she has long been wrapped in lies for so long, how can he reach her? This book is even better than the first book of the series. Where that one laid the groundwork, this one built on it. The story is gripping, screaming along to the final page. Getting more and more enthralling with each page, it left me truly frustrated that I have to wait another year for the next chapter! This is a great book, absorbing, with a fascinating storyline. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
Rating: Summary: Mr. Brooks, you're getting lazy! Review: It seems to me that Terry Brooks is getting a bit lazy. I spent [a lot] on this book and it was short. Way too short. Yes, it has 384 pages, but the typeface is huge. I'm sorry if I sound super-cheap, but I felt ripped off. I read it in a day, and I'm no speed reader. The author could have simply had a series with two really great books, Ilse Witch and a combination of Antrax and Morgawr into a single book. As for the content, it was really engaging and a good ride. I enjoyed it and I look forward to the next installment. However, I hope that Mr. Brooks will try to write a book that is worth the money that his loyal fans are willing to dish out. Let's all just hope that he isn't simply trying to make a quick buck on us.
Rating: Summary: Antrax (The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara, Book 2) Review: After waiting three weeks for the book to arrive I could not believe how fast I read it. I could not put it down. Once again Terry Brooks had me hanging on the edge waiting to see what happened next. The only thing that is driving me crazy is waiting for the 3rd book! I can not wait to read the outcome.
Rating: Summary: A good page turner Review: This book starts running from the get go. It picks up the story right where the first book ended, with the main characters scattered all over the place. The story then proceeds to follow them in non-stop action for 384 pages. I think this second book was certainly better than the first book, and definitly worth reading.
Rating: Summary: The greatest Brook's novel to date! Review: This book, takes off where the last one left off. I don't know how many of you read any of Terry Brook's Shannara series, but I will confidently say his Shannara series is a bench mark in quality fantasy, mind you I read lots of fantasy books. He doesn't bore you with details, he entertains you with details. You really feel intoned to all the characters, even after reading his previous nine Shannara books, I still find that I want him to write more and more. He should make a role-playing game like final fantasy, I mean his story telling far exceeds anything they would write and it would be fun to go through the books. anyway I'm just pleased Terry is still writing his great shannara epic, and I'll buy the next one as soon as its available.
