Rating: Summary: Islam Unveiled Review: This is an excellent in depth study of some critical issues in Islam, with which the West must soon come to grips. Unfortunately, Robert Spencer cannot let go of his conservative background, and the contiuned apologias and explanations of why Christianity does not share these challenges detracts significantly from his presentation.Nonetheless, his key questions regarding the inerrancy of the Koran (sp?) and the Sunnah and their implications for Islamic fundamentalism are worth reading, so long as one maintains a healthy skepticism with respect to Robert Spencer's conservative bias. This book should probably be read in conjunction with Lewis' "What Went Wrong," from which Robert Spencer quotes quite frequently.
Rating: Summary: Very insightful; very disturbing; very interesting Review: "Islam Unveiled" is a real eye-opener! Robert Spencer says what other Islamic experts know, but are afraid to say: that the roots of terror are found right in core Islamic texts: the Qur'an and more. In this book, he goes deeply into those sources to show exactly what Islam teaches about unbelievers, women, and more. It's fascinating, sobering reading: every government official from George W. Bush on down should read Islam Unveiled, so that they'll know what we're up against.
Rating: Summary: Eye-opening, riveting, brutally honest Review: This is a disturbing look at Islam as it truly is, not as Westerners and Christians would like it to be. The book states its case clearly and unabashedly through objective analysis of the Koran, the Sunnah, and the deeds and words of Muslim leaders throughout history. It skillfully and convincingly answers the objections of the apologists who would prefer a naive, head-in-the-sand point of view. It is a must-read for all Americans who want to understand those who have declared jihad against us. I can only hope a copy finds its way to the President's desk.
Rating: Summary: Very well done! Review: Mr Spencer lays it all out there in this book. This is not his opinion of what Islam is; rather the cold hard facts of what the Koran says. If you trust Tom Brokaw or Peter Jennings to give you the straight scoop then do not bother with this book. If you want to know the truth, then this is the book for you.
Rating: Summary: Timely look at Islam Review: Islam unveiled is an overview of Islam that includes all the often overlooked and uncomfortable facts of that religion. It is filled with often entertaining (though occasionally heartbreaking) stories. Most of all, it shows how easily the core elements of Islam give rise to terrorism and Muslim regimes which are violent both to their own people and toward other nations. This is a well-documented book free of "moon god" speculations, and such nonsense. I was able to use its notes and references to find a lot of fascinating other books about Islam, history, Muslim theology and ways various Muslims approach their faith. The author says flat out that the Muslim culture has made contributions of great beauty to the world. He is very clear on the fact that he does not think all Muslims are terrorists. But the west can't engage in wishful thinking, ignore that some of our core values differ from Muslim's, or imagine that we can be indifferent to fundamentalist Islamic groups around the globe.
Rating: Summary: Sheer Ignorance Review: It is because of books such as this, and the people who follow such garbage...that there exists this vicious cycle of ignorance and hate that further perpetrates the so-called "hate" culture that Islam supposedly engenders. You people are incredibly ingnorant, what do you know about Islam? what do you know about Islamic culture? Its incredible how a small group of extremists (found in every religion) that distort and completely taint the image and message of Islam, come to represent the world's second largest religious population...This book is simply put, GARBAGE...and a reflection of Western notions of Euro-Western superiority and ignorance.
Rating: Summary: Honest? Try BIASED Review: This text is the most biased thing I have ever come across. As a neutral, open-minded reader, this book contradicts all other level-headed looks at Islam written by accredited scholars. The so-called problems this book addresses are not problems at all, but are beliefs that are truly and honestly justifiable. This author should be ashamed for writing such an offensive book. It is FALSE.
Rating: Summary: Don't buy it - I only gave it 1 star as you have to select. Review: This book should be removed from your amazon list.
Am I the only one that remembers that "religious fundementalism" simply means following the fundementals/core beliefs of a religion? Why when linked with islam is this always portrayed negatively? The supposed historical analysis and factual objectivity in this book is infact blatant orientalism. It reeks of orientalism: always comparing everything to the west and beginning with the assumption that the west's ways are superior.
If we want to learn about Islam we'll have to read texts for Muslim authors and historians because our writers will always be hindered by our "SUPERIORITY complex".
Rating: Summary: The undemocratic democracy of Robert Spencer Review: The book strats on wrong premises. The book presumes democracy as the supreme order for humans to follow. It also presumes that democracy is secular, and that democracy is pluralistic. Based on this presumption the author condimns Islam as untolerant and unfitting which is true perhaps at 20/100.
The problems is: I would not like demomcracy if it is not pluralistic, and has no agenda of its own such as the enforcement of its own sets of ideas and social engineering in a plural society.
What the author show is that democracy in fact has its own agenda and sets of belief which every other belief and religion should follow; otherwise, such disobeiying religion would be unfit and if its followers went to self-determination which is supported by the same religion then it would be millitant and fanatic.
The big question that is left unanswered is that in democracy, as a pluralistic system, you need not ask other people and faiths to conform to an institutionalised faith and belief. The moment you do so you make democracy as unplural and uncivil as the religion you portray to be guilty of.
I would recomend it for those who want repression in the name of democracy.
Rating: Summary: Please be peaceful in the name of God. Review: First of all, I would like to say to all the Muslims that are getting angry about this book: Please go read the book first. That way, if you DO have criticisms, they are actually valid and not based solely on ur bias and anger.
Next, I would like to say to all of those that are arguing that Islam is not a religion of peace, how does arguing show that your religion is any more peaceful?
I read the book, and a major problem that I saw is that Robert Spencer does not diffrentiate between what is going on in Muslim countries and what Islam teaches. People do not understand that these are two different things. There is corruption in every religion and there is fundamentalism in EVERY religion because of course, people over interpret or do stupid things. But it is not right to say that the religion does not bring peace. Clearly, there IS a reason that it is the fastest growing religion in the world. I plan to write a book very soon with all the correct answers to Mr.Spencer's "disturbing questions", ones that he did not twist from the Quran. I think that people only talk bad about things they consider a threat. Please do not get angry that people have found a way to find peace in themselves. I think there is no reason for the religions to fight against each other: We all share love for God. That should be strong enough to unite us. Please do no pertrude upon other religions because you think you know about them, because you do not until you actually read with an open mind. All muslims that write on this site, please maintain ur dignity and show that Muslims really are peaceful. Expect my book before 2006.
