Rating: Summary: Fascinating Insight into Pre-war Minds of Principals Review: Shaara's effort outstanding! A must read for anyone interested in insights into Civil War protagonists' ideas on freedom, economics, states' rights, and self-determination. Great character sketches on generals and how they got to be leaders of blue and gray. Shaara has knack for understanding ideas and causes of greatest American conflict and putting them into believable and entertaining words. Couldn't put this book down!!
Rating: Summary: A very good novel Review: I am a 14 year old who loves reading and trys to get hold of any war novel/biography about it. If you like reading about war also this is a great book. It shows how the men felt and it is a great preceeding book of Killer Angels.
Rating: Summary: worthy detail with a fictitous spin. Review: Shaara's book is a good story about some interesting generals. His accounts of Jackson are particularly good. The book, however, bogs down at times.
Rating: Summary: Not as good as Killer Angels, but an easy read Review: Although this book is not as good as Killer Angels, I thought that Gods and Generals was interesting, well researched, and easy to read.Jeff Shaara covers a much greater time span in his book (from the beginning of the war up to Gettysburg) than his father did in Killer Angels, which is quite a challenge. If you are looking for the kind of detail that Killer Angels has, you may be disappointed. Jeff seems to have chosen to focus more on the men who shaped the war, than the battles themselves. He does not overkill you with facts and figures which I thought made for an easier read than some Civil War books. My interest level increased with each chapter as he continued to develop the main players of the book. The most interesting character in the book was General Jackson. When I finished it, the biggest question in my mind was what would Gettysburg have been like if Jackson had survived?
Rating: Summary: A fine novel. Review: For some reason I've read nothing but war novels this summer; Gods and Generals, The Triumph and the Glory, and Cold Mountain. Gods and Generals is a great Civil War novel, Jeff Shaara has made those epic days come to life in the pages of his wonderful novel.
Rating: Summary: Great book Review: This book is of great quality. it is filled with historical stuff. This book is also much better then the "last full measure".(my personal opinion)
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: I found this book to be excellent. I read the Killer Angels before I read Gods and Generals and Jeff Shaara does a great job following in his fathers footsteps. I especially liked how it covers many different peoples thoughts like Lee and Hancock and etc. This book was excellent.
Rating: Summary: Slightly Disappointing Review: Jeff Shaara's prequel to his father's book, THE KILLER ANGELS, starts out fine. I found myself easily drawn into the pre-war lives of the principal characters, especially Robert Lee. However, once the war started, the novel began to go downhill. Shaara barely touched the impact of the war's early battles such as Bull Run, Chancellorville and Antietam. I was especially disappointed by his reacount of the latter. Nor did he fully explore the characters' feelings regarding the war and the reasons behind it. Inadequate ending to a good start.
Rating: Summary: Extremely well written!! This is definitely a book to read Review: This book shows you that Michael Shaara's writing ability is still alive in Jeff. He explains the true reality of war and how it took its toll on those who commanded in it. It shows you how the generals felt about the continual bloody war they fought in. General Lee and General Hancock are the characters you should focus on. Their thoughts on the war are intresting and intriguing. Each chapter ends with you waiting for more. You always want to find out what happens next. This is the second best book I have read after The Killer Angels. Be sure to read the Last Full Measure if you read this one too.
Rating: Summary: the book wasent as good as the killer angels. Review: JEFF THIS BOOK MUST HAVE HIS FATHER ROOLING IN HIS GRAVE, THIS BOOK IS A BIG DISAPPOINTMEN! IT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER.
