Summary: Healthy Living
Review: This was the first of Dr. Weil's books that I've read and I thought it was a great eye-opener to the unhealthy eating habits the majority of Americans maintain. It provides great detail about not just what you shouldn't eat but the reasons behind why something may be unhealthy for you. The book is more about educating the reader than to tell them what they should or should not do.

Summary: Incredibly helpful: interesting & informative
Review: I've read this book cover-to-cover twice since I bought it. I've taken his advice on a number of matters. Because of his suggestion to check on allergies to dairy products, I took my son off dairy for one week. He immediately lost the runny nose he's had for the last 10 years! (His pediatrician had dismissed my questions about possible food allergies.) I took his dieting suggestions (and bumped up my exercise routine)--since March, I have dropped my cholesterol levels 75 points & dropped my weight 15 pounds.

He gives clear advice, distinguishing between what he knows and what he believes to be true. He backs up his suggestions with up-to-date research.

Even though it contains a great deal of information (and works well as a nutrition encyclopedia), I found his style to be very engaging.

A GREAT book! I've recommended it to many of my friends & relatives. (My brother, who had been diagnosed with adult-onset diabetes, recommended it to me. His diabetes is now under control, & he no longer needs medication.)

Summary: A Diabetic's Delight!
Review: Having been diagnosed with Adult Type II diabetes last year, I was confused as to what I could still eat that wasn't "fake". Artificial sweeteners just taste bad; you know you're eating chemicals! Dr. Weil layed it out perfectly, and helped to change my thoughts on the way that I eat. I do have to restrain myself from becoming the food police around friends and family. And, I now understand why I have diabetes at this stage in my life; lack of exercise and a healthy diet. I can very easily prepare, eat, and enjoy this food for the rest of my life, to improve my life. I recommend this book to those who have to test their glucose 2-3 times a day, and also to those who don't have to, yet. Thank you, Dr. Weil.

Summary: Hooray, Dr. Weil!
Review: I review all of Andrew Weil's books as 5 stars, and this one is no exception. Dr. Weil has a magnificent talent for warmly and personally bringing his message of wellness and spiritual wholeness to the public. He is wise beyond all our years, marrying his communicative gifts with his outstanding professional and experiential credentials.

This book has all the information on Wellness you'll ever need, along with insights, facts, and personal stories to make this an incredible read. Now, if we'd all FOLLOW the points in the book, we'd all be vibrantly alive -- like Andrew Weil!

Summary: Good, but kind of wordy.
Review: Dr. Weil makes excellent points...but is food really this interesting?

Summary: Dr. Weil is great!
Review: I love Dr. Weil's advice! I think he has his finger on the pulse of a healthy generation (healthy, that is, if they follow his advice). It is a difficult book to read: somewhat dry and a little complicated in the details sometimes... but his summaries are great and the knowledge you walk away with makes it all worthwhile. Here's to good health!!

Summary: This book changed me completely
Review: This is the only health book I've ever read. I say "health," as opposed to "diet," intentionally. This is not a diet book. It is designed to educate the reader about, surprisingly enough, eating well for optimum health.

The information Dr. Weil presents regarding the foods that used to be staples of my diet scared me away from eating those foods. After reading this book, I decided to forego, as much as possible, carbohydrates with high glycemic indices and fats high in saturated and polyunsaturated fats. I made this decision because of health reasons, as opposed to as a way to lose weight. In 3 months I went from weighing about 210 pounds to about 185, almost unintentionally.

Before I began reading this book, I was expecting a list of what to eat and why. I couldn't have been more wrong. This book is very interesting, very well written and is a must-read.

Summary: An interesting book
Review: A bit new age, and certainly not a lot of hard science, but the good doctor does make us sit up and think about our eating habits. He is, however a botanist in the main, so that a lot of what he says has to be taken in this light. Still, every so often a book comes along which sparks a new interest in a subject, and so while a lot of people have begative feelings about him and his book, it is terrific to see people worrying more about what people put into their mouths. For real high-quality information without quirkiness, try The Wellness Encyclopedia of Food and Nutrition from the University of California School of Public Health.

Summary: Finally a diet you can follow...
Review: Before I say anything, let me first say that since I have read this book 4 months ago, I have lost 35 pounds (235 to 200) while gaining muscle mass. I'm a 24 year old guy who has tried "The Zone", "Atkins" and many other diets. I run and lift weights, but have always struggled to find a diet that is normal, healthy, and one that you can stick to for the rest of your life instead of switching back to your old ways as soon as you have lost the weight. This is that diet. I knew when I was on the Atkins and Zone diets that they were bad and not for the long-term. Sure they work, but this book clears up why those are fads that are making the authors a lot of money, but are doing little to change the obesity problem in the US.

This book follows a maxim of dieting that many people simply don't get, or can't adhere to: take in fewer calories than you expend. It's that simple. But the real genius in this book is that it makes you realize the danger in fast food, processed food, etc. Weil doesn't go overboard on the organic thing, but he does make you understand that natural foods are almost always superior to "man-made" foods.

Being a long-time exerciser but at the same time always 20-30lbs overweight, this book finally made me realize that who you are and what you look like is 70% what you put in your body and 30% what you do with your body (exercise). The old adage about "I can eat what I want as long as I stay active and work out" is simply false. Maybe if you are blessed with a naturally high metabolism but not for the majority of us. This book shows you ways of eating that are simple and enjoyable, but the real advantage of this book is inspiration.... inspiration to live the healthy life. I recommend it only to those who want just that.

Summary: Overweight? Did you personally measure his body fat?
Review: Have any of these catty reviewers actually seen more that just Dr. Weil's face, because I have, and he looks very healthy. Perhaps the beard is confusing to you. From what I've seen of him, he appears to have a large frame and good muscle tone; I didn't even see a belly, if that is indeed important.

I believe that this book was intended to help people reevaluate their food choices for everyday healthful eating. He has helped me to try to enjoy a more varied and fresh approach to eating, and think twice about some things I hadn't considered yet.

At any rate, I didn't read any claims in this book about this diet being ideal for cancer patients, or people looking to lose hundreds of pounds; if that is the case, by all means, look to a specialist for advice. If you are like me, however, a reasonably healthy person looking for help to improve your awareness about the food that you eat and how it may be affecting your body, Dr. Weil has some educated, tasty and common sense advice that you should *of course* take with a grain of salt (just like everything else you read).
