Summary: Invaluable reference: food as preventative medicine
Review: I've read plenty on eating well. I think I had a solid understanding of nutrition but I caught Dr. Weil on a PBS special. You may have seen it also. Well I was impressed and decided to buy his new book. The book covers all aspects of nutrition. You will learn all the basics but Weil will also teach you some things you'll wish you knew earlier. Specifically he explains the differences in fats (some are very bad for you yes, but! some are very good for you),explains the idea of glycemic index of carbohydrates and talks aboutimportant vitamins and minerals and their food sources. The theme is preventative action! I'm buying this book for the relatives I really care about.

Summary: Eating Well For Optimum Health-The Audio Tape
Review: I've enjoyed and found useful many of the other books and tapes from Mr. Weil and since I've just started a weight watchers regimen I was looking forward to some good practical advice. Well it's here, but you better not be in a hurry to get to it. The majority of the first tape is filled with mind numbing chemical strings and body reactions that I found difficult to follow. I think Dr. Weil got bored with it also because his voice seemed to develop a meditative/monotone quality which I found dangerous to listen to while driving at night. The second, and in particular, third tapes finally get into the practical day to day recommendations for diet, vitamins and fitness that will be helpful to anyone that is seeking to start-up or tweak a healthy lifestyle.

Summary: The most insightful book on nutrition I have ever read
Review: I was fascinated to realize that there are so many MIS-understandings we (collectively speaking) have had-- about nutrition, until now.

In his book, Dr. Weil indicated that table sugar, is not as "bad" as we tend to think, as the results from the Glycemic list show that there are worse things (such as white flour).

FAT is another issue which Dr Weil makes quite clear, as it has its place in our diets, both in terms of taste, as well as the Omega 3's (or 6's).

This book is NOT about "the basics", as it is much more involved. Actually, given the current media "fights" between both diet "extremes" (e.g. Pritikin (no fat) and Atkins (lots of it), THERE ARE NO BASICS, rather an acceptance of various beliefs about what is best for our health.

I am grateful for Dr Weil's book, as it is comforting to know that meat is not always the "ememy", nor are carbohydrates always the enemy either. I think he does an excellent job explaining how the various carbohydrates affect us in different ways.

I have read many, many diet and nutrition books. I appreciate whatever information I gained from them, yet with Dr Weil's book, I feel a greater level of CONFIDENCE in what he has to say, as he goes into the scientific detail (some of which I get, some I don't).

Summary: Munificent, Dr. Wild!
Review: Dr. Wild have released a very nice and unique cookbook with the publication of this one. I own several other marinading cookbooks, and there are many good ones out there. This one is my absolute favorite because the recipes are a little more than your basic grilled steak, fried gecko, or hamburger. Try the Somali grilled Arctic Hare with gorgonzola-scallion compound butter and the Polish coati mundi steak with rosemary brushed potatoes and red peppers. Don't forget to try the barbeque sauce. It's fantastic. The book's contents include tips on grilling, burgers, beef and veal, lamb and pork, poultry, game and game birds, and sauces, salsas, maranades, rubs and other condiments. There are no fish recipes so if you are looking for that specifically, find another cookbook. If everything else sounds good to you, you will enjoy this inovative book by the great Dr. Wild.

Summary: Hey! We're not all biochemists!
Review: I almost didn't buy this book after reading some of the reviews here on Amazon. I'm not a novice in nutrition, and the reviews led me to believe this book wouldn't be of help, that it was too basic, not deep enough. But I'm glad I went ahead and got it because there is enough new information and scientific explanation (especially the omega-6 vs. -3 and carbohydrate processing/insulin) to make this very worthwhile. Yes, it's a good introduction to those new to the field, but there was enough new for me to help me adjust my diet (yet again, it seems!).

Summary: Eating Well For Optimum Health
Review: You have to like reading about nutrition to truly enjoy this book. It has a lot of great information that makes us all understand why none of the current diets work. Dr. Weil's focus is not eating to lose weight, but eating to be healthy. We all need to go back to basics - If you don't understand what is on the label don't buy it. I've read many diet and nutrition books and have tried many diets. There are always too many restrictions that cause fast burnout and weight-gain. After reading this book I just want to eat food that is good for me!

Summary: Another good book from Dr. Weil
Review: I think that this book is best for people who are beginning to explore natural health - a lot of the information was things I already knew, but then I've read most of Weil's work and avidly read many books and magazines on natural health. The fact that doesn't go into enough depth for some of us certainly doesn't prevent it from being an excellent book for most readers, though.

Summary: Alternative Health for Beginners
Review: I really wanted to like this book more. Unfortunately, I found it very basic. Someone who is just beginning to explore healthy eating and the how-to's of living a healthy life in the Land of the Whopper might find inspiration and information here. If you've already been reading about and trying to live this lifestyle, there is nothing new here. I thought the 1-2 page success stories did not delve in enough to really tell the reader how the person managed to overcome their bad eating habits ("I started giving up fast food restaurants...later I started eating better at home.") I was really hoping for more.

Summary: A fabulous, informative book.
Review: There is so much more to health than being rail-thin. Dr. Weil shows us how to be healthy in all aspects of our lives.

Summary: I ate it right up!
Review: After dinner last night, I sat down and read EATING WELL FOR OPTIMUM HEALTH in its entirety. The book is drenched in self-empowering common sense. Dr. Weil's advice -- and his recipes -- are wonderful. He's made me realize how confused I was about the relative nutritional and health value of the food I eat. His plan seems to be wise and useful. I plan to follow it in order to lose 20 pounds as well as to boost my immune system, and, hopefully, add a few healthy years to my life. And, what's especially cool is that he invites his readers to visit his web site and share our experiences on his program. All in all, I'd judge this to an inspiring and unusually wise book.
