Rating: Summary: Another winner by Mary Higgins Clark Review: Wonderful element of mystery, but don't expect too much in the way of seances or much talk with the deceased. While I thought more of that aspect would have been brought out in the book, Mary does not disappoint in the suspense department.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: I've read Higgins Clark for quite some time, and was looking forward to this one. It was disappointing, both in the number of characters (I couldn't figure out the first 50 pages !!!) and the plot!! I finished it just because I finish books, but I did feel like puttting it away a number of times. Has she just written so many books and is running out of ideas? getting stale???
Rating: Summary: Engrossing plot with a few too many characters Review: At this point, saying that this is another excellent mystery by Mary Higgins Clark is almost an implied redundancy. Clark is probably the most prolific and consistent mystery writer of this generation, and this book is a solid addition to her body of work. This is the eighth or ninth book I've read by Mary Higgins Clark and this plot ranks among my favorites by her. Though the killer in this story might be considered a sociopath, I was relieved to find there were no psychopathic mass murderers (ordinarily a staple in her work) in this novel. The story revolves around an explosion on a boat where the four people aboard are missing and presumed dead. Typical of her style, Clark gives just about every character, including the victims themselves, motives for setting the blast. The plot structure is excellent and it keeps the reader guessing until the very end. There are a number of flaws in the writing however, that detracted from the story. Clark includes so many characters that it is impossible to do much character development and makes the story difficult to follow. Some key suspects are dismissed too early in the novel. The coincidental links between Dan, his son, his mother and Nell were just a bit too far fetched. I read the audio edition of this book and Jan Maxwell gets low marks for her delivery. Her inflection was poor and every sentence sounded about the same. Despite these defects, the story was still an imaginative and engrossing tale that often had me sitting in my garage unable to tear myself from my car's tape player. I rated it a 7/10. If you like mysteries, you can't go wrong with it.
Rating: Summary: Spiritual & Suspenseful Review: Ms. Clark delivers her 22nd romantic thriller with an extra twist of psychic powers. In "Before I Say Good-Bye", we meet 32 year old Nell Mac Dermott. A woman of grand NY political heritage. After a marital squabble which left Nell telling her husband, Adam Cauliff, to just not come home--he doesn't. Amidst corruption rumors surrounding Adam, he and his associates are killed in an horrific boat explosion. Nell will not let this just be an "accident". She uses a gift she had almost forgotten she had. A gift of speaking to the departed. A gift that helped her say goodbye to her parents who were killed in a plane crash in Brazil when she was 10 years old. Mary Higgins Clark recently inked a deal worth 64 million dollars for four more suspense novels and one book of her memoirs. Her raw talent tempered by writing classes has definitely paid off for her and to her many readers. A Clark classic. Thank you for your interest & comments--CDS
Rating: Summary: No swear words in this one! Review: I love mystery books, and this one took me all of one day to read the 332 pages of Before I Say Goodbye! I shall definitely read more of the author's books. She introduces her characters one by one, giving you insight into their personality; carefully leading you up to the plot; and although you might well conclude who could be the villian(s), the ending is a total surprise. At the end of the read, I was totally surprised as well to see that the book had no swear words in it. I can readily see why Mary Higgins Clark is called America's 'Queen of Suspense". If you like mysteries and a quick read, this one is for you.
Rating: Summary: Mary Higgins Clark Does It Again Review: Keep them coming Ms. Clark. Before I Say Goodbye is the best yet. The characters were believable and the plot held tightly together.I could not put this book down and the dark circle under my eyes prove it.
Rating: Summary: Too rapid an end Review: I liked the fast pace of the story and MHC style of changing scenes rapidly...makes for a quick read. I thought it was suspenseful I thought someone else was still alive so I was fooled. Only complaint is the ending seemed so quick and under-developed. I always look forward to her next one though.
Rating: Summary: Before I say good-bye Review: All I can say is that I hate Mary Higgins Clark because her writing talents makes me so jealous :-} Before I Say Good-Bye was one of the best of her books. But, as others have mentioned, you have to be a true fan to understand her writing style to enjoy her books. Her character were so clear. I fell in love with Nell, Gert and Mac. And the new love between Nell and Dan will be interesting. But I was left in the air about what may have happen to Winifred Johnson? Did Adam kill her? Did she escape from the boat? How did he lose the purse? How can you get that badly burned in a rubber suit? That was the only thing I wondered about. But it was still an incredible story. I had planned to read the whole book over the weekend. It didn't last two days in my hand. Oh well, back to my Javascript manual. Ms. Clark, I can't wait to read the next one.
Rating: Summary: Spirits Review: I've read almost every book of MHC (except for the very first one's). This one is not as good as the last one because I thought that she was going in an other path. I was up to the point where the main female caracter was going to see Bonnie (I read the french version - so the names may not be the same) and I said to myself Mary where are you going with this story... but I realized that she didn't take the wrong road. I was disapointed by the person that was left from the accident, I wish it would have been the ... But I have to say that each time a new book comes out I'm the first one to buy it. Thank you Mary for the stories that you bring.
Rating: Summary: Interesting story, disappointing audio Review: This audiobook was my first Mary Higgens Clark book, and while I thought the story was interesting, I was disappointed with the style, and particularly the reader. It is written in a very upper-class, pretentious style, where paintings are "pedestrian at best" and the characters "quarrel". Under that, though, is a story I found interesting, enough to keep me going through the end. There are so many characters, some who pop up for a couple paragraphs and are never seen again, that the story slows a bit in parts. Even the main characters aren't very well-defined, and seem to have internal conflicts that don't make sense, but exist only to be a cog in the plotline. It seemed as though the book wants to be a TV movie, the kind where through a series of coincidental events, all the characters come to the same conclusion at the same time, just in time to come to the rescue. The most difficult part of the audio book, though, is the reader. She emphasises odd words, as if she is reading the book cold, not knowing what is coming up, even in the next sentence. As a result, you need to listen more closely to be sure you don't miss something.
