Review: Angela' Ashes was the most interisting I've ever read. I see commercials about poor people, but I've never read a book about an actual family or person. This book got me hooked from the very first page. I couldn't put the book down. It's hard to believe the way things were in the 1930's and the 1940's. I wasn't born yet so I can compair my life with the McCourts or any other family living in those times let alone in Limerk, Ireland. This book keeps you glued to the pages to see what will happen to the family next. I wonder will they get a better life? Do they survive? What happens next? The story shows what hard work and determination can do for ones self. I can't wait to read "'Tis".

Review: I found this story so riveting that I could not put it down! Mr. McCourt tells his sometimes painful story with such enthusiasm and childlike innocence that I felt at times like I was there with him in the slums of New York and Limerick. The idea that anyone could live through his childhood and yet retain his sense of humor and humble and loving perspective of life is amazing. A truly wonderful book!

Review: Alot of people gave McCourt flack for reinforcing the stereotype of the Irish. But I think they failed to realize that this was his childhood and the experiences that shaped his life was through his eyes. McCourt wrote this book as if he was writing a journal. His retrospect was far from the usual autobiography. He allows us into his lives by touching emotions that we may not known were there. Absolutely brilliant, this will be required reading in English Literature classes ten years from now.

Review: Not many of us could survive the abject poverty and ignorance that Frank McCourt's autobiography reveals. This tale of his Irish, Catholic upbringing in the lanes of Limerick could be one of the most depressing books you'll ever read. However, McCourt's strong character and innate sense of survival come shining through with his ability to bring out the humor in the most desperate of situations. The Irish, Catholics have often had many misfortunes visited on them, but this book gives you a first person account of the truth as seen through the eyes of a child. It is a must read.

Review: I thought it was a wonderful book. It really makes you appreciate your life and what you have. I am glad that he decided to share his childhood with the world. It is a very honest book and I don't know many people who would have the courage to write about their most private moments as he has. It is a very beautifully written book, you can actually hear the accents as you read. Although it is a sad story, he was very good at adding some humor to it. I can't wait to read 'Tis.

Summary: A Must-Read for 2000: Angela's Ashes
Review: If there is a memoir you are interested in reading for the year, it is this one. Frank McCourt brilliantly describes the life of his childhood, a life some of us could only dream of. He describes to the readers the many hardships facing families growing up during Depression era in a poor town in Ireland. The struggles of his life were many, even with some days having only crumbs to eat. The reader can fully understand what it was like to live in such poverty, and marvel at how Mr. McCourt got himself over such a large hurdle. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, but I warn you, it is not fairy tale. Enjoy!
