Rating: Summary: Angela's Ashes Review: This book was a very inlighting experience. It made me look at all the things I myself take for granted. I was lucky growing up. I lived in the same home, had food on the table, and clothes to wear. I was very lucky! Thanks Frank McCourt for opening my eyes to those less fortunate than I.
Rating: Summary: The Best of the Best Review: Perhaps the best book ever written. One doesn't read this book so much as one becomes Frank McCourt. Objective observation and an inherent innocence makes for a truly entrancing novel. Described in such a way that one almost wants to live a similar life so that such a worldy view might be obtained. Sheer excellence!
Rating: Summary: Powerful Review: Bordering between horribly sad and extreemly funny and then back again and all the time keeping my attention as I followed young Frank through his life. Living in the Pacific Northwest of the USA I know cold and damp days. But what I have felt on my most miserable day here cannot compare to what Frank McCourt has told in this tale of his childhood. The style of writing with the absence of quotation marks grabbed me also. Roddy Doyle writes in a similar way and it's to me, refreshing to read this way. I've ordered the sequel "'Tis" which should arrive in a few days. I've heard some rumbling from friends (and have read reveiws here) that it isn't as good as "Angela's Ashes". I'll have to see for myself. This one will stay with me for awhile.
Rating: Summary: Truly moving Review: I decided to read this book out of curiosity--to see what everyone was talking about and also because of the onset of the new movie. I am truly glad I have read this novel. It has become, in an instant, my favorite book. I found this book to be so moving, and it brought me to tears. Mr. McCourt lived such an impoverished life, one so poor I don't think I'll ever have to be in that situation. But his story makes you realize how fortunate and lucky you are for what you have. They didn't even have what people on welfare have now. Can you imagine living off of tea and bread for periods at a time? Can you imagine having your father make money, but then spend it on himself by drinking it away? It really makes you stop and think and appreciate what you have because these people had nothing, but each other. Also, the way the book was written itself and the humor in it add to its superiority. I am so grateful to have read this book, as it has truly enlightened my thinking and reminded to be thankful for life and what I have. Read this book, you won't regret it, and hopefully it will add something to the way you view things regarding life.
Rating: Summary: "A CLASSIC" Review: I DID NOT WANT TO READ THIS BOOK AT ALL. I TOLD THE PERSON WHO WANTED ME TO READ IT, IT'S NOT MY STYLE. WELL ALL I CAN SAY IS THANKS BUDDY THIS BOOK WAS A CLASSIC. THIS IS ONE BOOK WHERE THOSE STUFFY BOOK PEOPLE ARE RIGHT. THE BOOK IS FANTASTIC. GIVE IT A TRY YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED.
Rating: Summary: great book for all ages Review: Im only a sophomore in high school and i just finished this book. I absolutely love it. i recommend this book to everyone that can read, all ages will love it!
Rating: Summary: Depressing, amusing, inspiring Review: Okay, you know from the numerous reviews and comments that this is an autobiographical tale about a boy, born of Irish parents in America, yet reared (if it can be called that) in Ireland. There is much in this book that will sadden and anger you. In fact, you mightn't think that a story about a boy and his family living in a state of squalor in the generally cheerless environment of wet and gloomy Limerick would be much fun to read about, or to laugh about for that matter. But the author makes it not only readable but engaging and entertaining, with healthy portions of humor, sardonic, irreverent or otherwise, laced throughout. That Frank McCourt can actually make the reader chuckle, considering the bleak subject matter is remarkable, but also remarkable is the story itself, one that almost screams to be made into a movie. Of course it has but I haven't seen it and, to be truthful, I'm kind of scared to; judging from some of the reviews I've read, I'm afraid it may spoil the book.
Rating: Summary: An Amazing Book Review: I have been an avid reader all my life. From all my childhood reading and all the marvelous literature I read as an English major in college, I can honestly say that "Angela's Ashes" was the most moving book I have read. It is amazing to see that any individual could overcome such dire hardships and sadness in his young life. The one thing that kept me smiling throughout the book was knowing that Mr. McCourt became a teacher and author and had a family and brought happiness to himself and so many others. I can't wait to read "'Tis". I also have my copy of Malachy's book "A Monk Swimming" ready to read as well.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Story Review: An amazing story detailing the life of this child. Truly based on Frank McCourt's life. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Angela's Ashes Review: Angela' Ashes was the most interisting book I've ever read. I see commercials about poor people, but I've never read a book about an actual family or person. This book got me hooked from the very first page. I couldn't put the book down. It's hard to believe the way things were in the 1930's and the 1940's. I wasn't born yet so I can compair my life with the McCourts or any other family living in those times let alone in Limerk, Ireland. This book keeps you glued to the pages to see what will happen to the family next. I wonder will they get a better life? Do they survive? What happens next? The story shows what hard work and determination can do for ones self. I can't wait to read "'Tis".
