Summary: No maybe's about it---Atkins works!
Review: I have to chuckle when I read reviews that say "maybe okay for some people" "I got headaches due to low carbs" "nutritionists always recommend a BALANCED DIET with foods from all FOOD GROUPS" etc., etc.

Folks, there are no maybe's about it--Atkins works. It is for everybody. Low carb is the fastest and best way for effective FAT LOSS.

Now, with Atkins newest book, you can stay on low carb forever. In the past, my biggest problem was losing weight on Atkins and then going back to a "balanced diet" which caused me to regain all of my weight again.

For people who are having problems i.e. headaches, you haven't read the first book completely yet. For people like me who blow it during holidays or after you have lost some substantial, you definitely need this book.

My only complaint is that Atkins didn't write this a long time ago.

Summary: This diet program works
Review: I lost 30 pounds on this diet program in two months and did not feel hungry or deprived. It works!

Summary: Not a fad, not a gimmick but a lifetime program
Review: I love the Atkins Diet. Lost over 48 lbs and totally restructed my figure. Lost in major fat areas like waist, hips and thighs while lowering cholesterol at the same time.

This newest book by Atkins prooves that you can be a lifer on the program. Plenty of recipes and menues, even holiday menues.

By contrast, a diet is something that you go on and off of. And that is the reason for the yo-yo effect. Not to mention that most diets don't work and leave you too hungry, tired and irritable to stay on.

I am also glad to see that Atkins is finally getting recognized as a safe program by the medical community which opposed him for so long.

How unfortunate that Dr. Atkins had to pass away just as his program is finally getting the recognition it deserves.

Nevertheless, a great program by a great man. Dr. Atkins, thank you for developing this program and RIP.

Summary: As great as it seems?
Review: I read the book, followed the advice, and was initially pleased with the results....The problem was that I wasn't overweight to begin with (just really out of shape), was in great health, and was simply looking for a way to manage my cravings and take control of my physical appearance. What this book doesn't address is how to get your body FIT.
To be fair, this book is great for forcing you to realize how you feed your body. Dt. Atkins makes you face the astounding amount of sugar and fast food you consume - the same stuff your mother tried to stop you from eating as a child because she KNEW it was not good for your health. You also recognize the shortage of vitamins and minerals in your diet and the fact that you don't drink nearly enough water. Dr. Atkins makes you understand that you must control what you put in your body, and that you CAN be in control. That is a very important message.
The problem with this book was that it didn 't allow me to eat the food that has been part of the diet which has resulted in the killer cholesterol and blood pressure rates that I currently have, and doesn't provide guidance to obtain the tight body that I really wanted.
So, to sum up I say buy the book if you are only concerned with weight loss and are willing to give up fruit, bread, and whole grains. Look at another program if you don't really have health issues or a weight problem, but want to focus on fitness as well as weight control.

Summary: The diet is great but you have to get out of your own way!
Review: I tried this diet three times and could not stick with it. Luckily, I was reading reviews online and came across reviews about Optimal Thinking: How to Be Your Best Self, that mentioned getting out of your own way to be your best and make the most of every situation. Well, I read Optimal Thinking and it cleared up my self-sabotage and I am now bringing my best self to the everpresent moment.)))) and guess what ... I have now lost 17 pounds on this diet. So I recommend both of these books :)))

Summary: the way to low carb dieting
Review: I was looking to shed about twenty pounds in a month or so, so I picked this up. It really helped me to understand the essentials of low carb dieting and it really did help me jump start my weight loss. It's a hard program to follow, but I found it does work, though I don't think I'll stay on it indefinitely. My friend recommended this book highly [...]

Summary: I can see my shoes now!!!
Review: I was so obese...I was so fat I couldn't see my shoes as well as my..uhh...private area- you know the one! Thanks to Atkins for Life, just like Martin Luther King, Jr., I have overcome! I love eating steaks, red meat, and all of the protein I can get my little hands on - things I couldn't touch in my Weight Watchers program!

Atkins for Life is much more complete than his previous book. It's more practical for horizontally challenged individuals like myself. I just adore Atkins - so what if fat people like me have made him a multi-millionaire many times over! Just remember, cardio and weight training are key, too. Without them and this book, I'd still be fat as a cow. Look out, here I come! Thanks, Dr. Atkins!

Summary: Maybe it works for some....
Review: I'm sorry, but this miracle diet just isn't for everyone. Removing all carbs like this is so very hard on the body. I tried it and didn't last a day--I was at work and had such a headache after eating meat and cheese all day, I could hardly complete the workday. I knew exactly what the problem was, and when I got home, had a piece of fruit. My headache immediantly went away. Likewise, my husband tried it for a week, went to the doctor and found his cholesterol was up far too high. I don't know why this book claims to be healthy when it just isn't. Nutritionists everywhere have always known that the way to diet healthfully is to eat foods from all food groups, but to merely moderate the intake and increase your exercise. Don't waste your money on this book or the diet; invest in yoga classes.

Summary: This Book tells people what they want to hear
Review: I'm sure I'll be lambasted by the Aktinites - but this book is absolute proof positive that you tell people what the want to hear - they'll buy it.

To his credit, the Atkins diet removes all processed carbs - the source of most calories in the American Diet. This naturally causes weight loss. Furthermore, his extremely high fat, high protein diet produces a significant amount of ketones - not good for you, but this ostensibly does indicate fat burn. Keep in mind that Ketosis is a form of illness. Stick to his diet, you will lose weight. No question. At what cost? That is another issue.

If you honestly believe that a diet consisting of bacon, butter, sausage, full fat cheese, heavy cream, etc is better for you than one consisting of whole grains, many vegetables, low fat meats, plain baked potatoes, most fruit, etc, have at it. Eat all the summer sausage you want - but eat an apple or banana? Heaven Forbid.

The diet lacks roughage (you'll need to take supplements); it lacks many nutrients (the good folks from Atkins will try to sell you their vitamins to make up for this - surprise); and for truly active people, the dearth of energy producing unprocessed carbohydrates, will leave you feeling drained - especially if you're an athlete.

A low calorie, controlled fat diet high in UNPROCESSED Carbs will not only make you feel better, it will give you more energy, and make you feel a hell of a lot better.

I'm 53 - my diet is the exact antithesis of Atkins. With the exception of the processed carbs that he recommends eliminating (I also do this) I consume at least 250 grams of carbs per day. I do this intentionally. Furthermore, I consume almost no fat; but I eat all that I want of the foods that I do.

I'm not overweight; my cholesterol is 105; my blood pressure is low; and I'm in better physical shape than most 25 year olds. 5 years ago - I was a fat slob - with typical American Eating habits. I, as well as my doctor, attribute all of my positive gains to a HIGH CARB LOW FAT diet.

Summary: Good Book
Review: I've lost 2 pounds in 2 weeks. That may not sound like much, but I lost 11 pounds before going on this diet and the going gets tougher after you've lost weight (total loss = 13 pounds). Most people start off with the induction diet, but I started with the maintenance diet. That provides a smoother transition from my previous diet (non-Atkins) which had lots of fruit and vegetables. The main things I cut out are bread, rice, potatoes and bananas.

The maintenance diet looks more heart healthy than the induction diet. There are vegetables on this diet. I never read the previous books, so I don't know if Dr. Atkins changed his mind about vegetables later in life.
