Rating: Summary: Finally! A diet that works AND can be lived with! Review: I am a physician. All my professional life I was steeped in the disinformation regarding low fat diets. And I kept getting fatter and fatter and fatter. Then a friend told me about Atkins. At first I scoffed, but I went out and bought the book anyway. I bought it and read it BEFORE reading the reviews on this site. I wish I had read the reviews first because that alone would have provided the motivation I needed to get going. I went on the induction phase of the diet for two weeks and lost, I kid you not, 16 pounds! I then attempted, more or less successfully to stay on the induction for 8 months over which time I lost a total of 55 pounds. I am still loosing and will stay on the diet until I reach my target weight of 175 - 180 pounds. Another 20 pounds or so. I actually find being on the induction diet easier than trying to modulate my carb intake. I am a carboholic and am just more comfortable avoiding them altogether. It takes 7 - 14 days to rid yourself of your carb craving. BUT, don't cheat. Read the book carefully and adhere to it meticulously. You will loose weight. Now there are those naysayers who whine that they can't stay on the diet or that they feel too deprived. And maybe the diet isn't for everyone. But if you love to eat, hate to count calories, and want an approach that WILL work and more importantly that you CAN do - this is the diet for you. I've resigned myself that I must eat like this for the remainder of my life. Actually not quite as draconian, BUT if I want to stay fit I will have to cut down drastically on carbs. Oh, I almost forgot to mention. I feel great. No more post meal energy crashes. And I feel 20 years younger. I honestly had forgotten how easily I used to move around. I can't wait for the next 20 to come off. And I KNOW that it will. Don't listen to the nattering nabobs of negativity. Go for it. Just do it! Good luck.
Rating: Summary: A zillion THANK YOU's for Dr. Atkins' lifetime work! Review: I am living firsthand what thousands of Atkins patients and millions of his readers before me already have reported - permanent weight loss; a healthier, far more energetic body; a joyous outlook on life born of knowing that because of Dr. Atkins' lifetime dedication to diet truth, I finally have all the keys to escaping obesity and all of it's accompanying health problems. I will never again be an unwitting prisoner of the deadly duo: sugar and flour. His legacy will continue on for as long as there are still people who need to understand why their "low fat"/"low calorie"/high carbohydrate diets are failing and leaving them ever more fat, tired, and miserable. Read the books for yourselves, folks. There IS hope for you!
Rating: Summary: Advanced Atkins Mainly Review: I bought this book from the perspective of wanting to lose weight and learn more about low-carb living. I thought that this book was not a good choice for someone wanting an introduction to Atkins. This book approached the topic as though you already had some knowledge and in fact were already on the diet. This book focuses on staying on Atkins as a lifestyle. Even as I decided to eat less carbs, I didn't find the recipes in this book especially helpful.
Rating: Summary: pounds just melt off Review: I bought this book to go along with the Atkins diet book. This book is intended for people who have read the other little book detailing the Atkins diet plan. This book has a lot of good recipes and more indepth information on continuing your low carbs lifestyle but if your looking to start the Atkins diet then you need to purchase the other book, I think its $5.85. Anyway, my husband and I have just started the Atkins diet and are right in the middle of the Induction Phase. It has been 6 days and he has lost 7 lbs and I have lost 6 lbs. I have to be honest and say it has been difficult to give up sugar. The second day I got a horrible head ache, but tylenol took care of it and I have been wanting a big ole baked potatoe something fierce!! But the weight loss is the motovation and stepping on the scale each morning and loosing one to two lbs is a great feeling. My husband had to find a belt this morning to hold up his pants...that hasnt happened in a LONG time. I do have more energy and feel pretty good so far. I do recommend this book as it has a lot of good information for continuing your lowcarb lifestyle.

Rating: Summary: Thank You Review: I find this very hard to follow. But I will keep trying.
Rating: Summary: Dangerous - you must see you doctor first Review: I followed this book to the letter. I was determined to loose weight and keep it off after years of trying. My husband joined me in this about a month after I started. After about 6 months I was seeing some weight loss and my husband lost a litte more than I did. I went to my doctor for a checkup and the lab results showed my LDL cholesterol and tryglicerides were up just barely in the high range. Considering I had never bad results before this was alarming. I told my doctor about the Atkins diet I was on and he just shook his head and laughed. He said the diet was find for weightlifters for a few weeks or a month, but for normal people it is just a ticket to an early grave from heart disease or stroke. Too much fat he said. I was worried and sent my husband in and his numbers were of the charts (his had been slightly high before but not like this). His blood pressure was up too. The end result is we are off the Atkins diet and eating a balanced diet while we heal our bodies from the damage. I knew better than to start a major diet without talking to my doctor first, but I did it anyway. It keeps me up some nights thinking how much damage I did to my husband's heart during those months. My doctor told me to the web site of the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) and read their nutrition information and the in depth reviews of many of the "fad" diets out there. You might find it helpful too.
Rating: Summary: Worth the weight! Review: I hadn't heard about the Atkins Diet until yesterday. Apparently, low-carb diets are a great way to lose weight. Who knew? You'd think people would want to advertise a diet where you could lose tons of weight, just by decreasing the amount of carbohydrates you consume, but this is the first I'm hearing about it. Since I'm lazy, and I love taking shortcuts and getting results the easy way, the Atkins Diet seemed like a perfect fit for me. Sure, I've given up all the things I love -- bread, cookies, French fries, pasta, pizza, Burger King Whoppers with a bun, ice cream -- but it was all worth it. I've lost 45-pounds in two months (results not typical), and I've never felt better about myself! By substituting high carb meals with high fat meals, I dropped the weight, however, my blood pressure sky-rocketed to dangerous levels (currently being treated with medication). If you ask me, that's a small price to pay for looking G-O-O-D! Ever since Atkins became part of my life, I've become a new person. Not since college have I walked into a bar with so much confidence. Jump on the Atkins bandwagon before other people find out about this amazing diet. Then you can tell everyone that you heard it first from chatchi.
