Summary: Great read
Review: I don't understand why other reviews say this book was disappointing or confusing. Once I got into the book, the characters were fairly easy to keep track of and there wasn't that much about the horse world to make it confusing. I will admit, I did figure out who the real criminals were before it ended. Nonetheless, it was a great read and I read it in a day or so.

Summary: Really Unique
Review: I enjoyed this book because it took me into a new world in which I have little knowledge, and gave me enough information so that I could understand it, but not so much that it lost the story line.

Elena, the main character is wonderfully human. She has depression issues and real problems from a beleivable cause. Many writers don't have something truly bad happen to a character, because it makes people uncomfortable. I for one was glad to see a real person.

I think this was very well written, and a good read for those of you who like mysteries. This is not a romance, and if you like a healthy dose of romance in your series, I would try, Helen Myers, Nora Roberts or Erica Spindler. Very good book!

Summary: Not one of Hoag's best books, but ok...
Review: I guess I've been spoiled by reading Hoag's "Lucky's Lady" and "Ashes to Ashes" which I thought were great books. So I grabbed "Dark Horse" off the shelf expecting the same exciting adventure and suspense out of Hoag. But something was lacking in the tale of Elena Estes. It certainly wasn't the quick wit and smart come-backs, so Hoag gets an A-plus from me for the dialogue. But I felt she ran too many characters into her plot and tended to bog the story down. Her love of horses and knowledge of the equestrian world certainly showed through for her, but her plot went limp at the end for me. Although I read the book almost without stopping, I really kept hoping it would get better and that just didn't happen for me.
Tami Hoag is a very talented author. And no doubt I'll buy more of her books. However, I found a couple of places where she seemed to simply "lose track" of what she was writing. For instance, on page 249 she writes about Landry during their conversation that he just looked at her, his eyes hidden by his sunglasses, his face like stone. Then on page 250, and during the same conversation, she writes that finally, he drew a deep breath and let it out, and lied to her. She could feel it. She could see it in the way his eyes went flat and blank. Cop eyes. Good writing, but no where during this conversation did she have Landry removing his sunglasses so she could see his eyes. In another scene, she has Landry pouring himself a couple of fingers of whiskey as old as she was, and sipped it. Again, during this same conversation, she has him sipping on his scotch. Where was Hoag's editor to let small things like this slip by?
Perhaps she was on a roll and writing the story too fast. Who knows? Regardless, she ranks as high as a talented writer to my way of thinking. And I'm looking forward to reading her next novel.

Summary: Great Book!
Review: I haven't liked the last four or five of Hoags'books, but before that she was one of my favorites. I am happy to say I like this book a lot and think her lead character is very believable. It ranks high along with my other favorite mytstery and suspense authors. I wish she had a web site like Lisa Scottoline and Michael Connally, as I like to keep up with my favorites!

Summary: Thought I reviewed this one
Review: I read and reviewed Dark Horse a couple of weeks ago, but it has not been picked up. It's intense suspense and a great read. Elena, an ex-cop, suspended in disgrace, is able to solve a bizarre kidnaping and regain her self-confidence. In my opinion, it is Hoag at her best, and a must read. Elena will surely return in another story.

Summary: Huh?
Review: I really like Tammy Hoag's novels, and this was no exception. I have to agree with other reviews that the main character, Elena, is a little too much at times. But, the plot moves along and I found that I couldn't put it down.
One problem I had was when Elena first went to the Seabright house and ended up meeting Bruce. He practically throws her out, and then a couple of days later, she goes to see him in his office, and they procede to have a conversation like they had never met. I paged back to see if there was an explanation for this, but didn't come up with one.
Otherwise, I'd recommend this book for those murder mystery fans out there.

Summary: a great read
Review: I thought this was one of her best books and I have read quite a few of them. I don't know anything about horses or the world she describes in this book but I really felt that it didn't spoil the book at all. In fact it probably would have ruined it if I had known more about this subject. The characters in the book who were under suspician were not people you would like to know in real life and each one of them had their own agenda. I thought the book was great and I was sorry to finish it.

Summary: Not as good as the rest of Tami's work!
Review: I was so excited to read this book. My librarian turned me on to Tami Hoag at the age of fifteen, and 7 years later I still consider Tami as one of my favorites! There was something just not totally Tami in this book. I thought it was a a bit boring personally and did not identify with her characters as much. It just wasn't the same as the steamy bayou! You would think this would have been her easiest work, being that she is an equestrian, but her two passions do not appear to work well together. I do give four stars though, because I still think she is a top pick author, and much better than the rest on display at the stores!

Summary: Complex Whodonit
Review: I've enjoyed all Ms. Hoag's books and the fact that each of her books have been unique in their own way. There is no cookie cutter at work here. Dark Horse didn't disappoint, in fact, I had a hard time putting it down. Strong characters, an interesting relationship twist, and a gritty, complex plot for this "whodonit" keeps readers guessing at all the answers until the very end. With a cast of characters pretty much all guilty of something, it was very difficult to figure out this intricate crime-on-crime until the writer decided to reveal it. Another great read from Tami Hoag.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: I've read several other Tami Hoag books, but I found this one disappointing. All the references to the "horse world" were rather confusing to me. I also thought that there were way too many characters to keep track of. There were many potential
evil-doers; and since these characters were not fully developed, I found myself bored and distracted. The plot got very intricate, and by the end I didn't care anymore about who did what. I'm not even sure why I finished it, except that I hate to stop a book in mid-stream.

On a positive note, I did like her main character, Elena Estes. She was a very gutsy ex-policewoman, but she didn't usually display a lot of common sense. You'd have to give her an "A" for effort. There was a hint of romance in the book between this woman and Detective Landry. I hope they do get together because they seem like kindred, but damaged souls.
