Summary: Dr. Dean Edell is Right On
Review: In the same vien as Dr. Spock's advice that we know more than we think we do, Dr. Edell champion's common sense over diet crazes and unsubstantiated research. The book is a wonderful read. Dr. Edell gives voice to living outside of the negative health news and gives proven advice on how to make good health decisions and live a satisfying life.

Summary: Last health guide you'll need
Review: I don't read many health books, and after this one I can't imagine I'll need to read another. This is the last health book you'll ever need. It's a sober counter to the latest monthly fashion diet/ exercise fad. What's more, it's actually readable -- and how many health books can you say that about?

Summary: Outmanned and Outgunned by Medical Morons
Review: This would be a much scarier country without a man of integrity like Dr. Dean Edell, who, heaven forbid, is a real doctor and who has time to do what most doctors cannot do.... keep abreast of timely medical information. It's about time he wrote this book. Since I am someone who is in a profession that is expected to tow the so-called "alternative medicine" line and buy into all the typical bogus holistic slogans ("It's been around thousands of years." "If it's natural it must be safe and effective." "Science and modern medicine are evil."), I am indebted to Dr. Edell for giving me a real education. This book is an example of a strong but lonely voice in the wilderness of medical misinformation, junk science and fad medicine. Those who buy into every holistic and media-generated notion will hate this book but they could never prevail one-on-one over Dr. Edell in the Court of Logic.

Summary: An irresponsible message with weak scientific support
Review: In an age when the number one killer is food-related illness, such as coronary heart disease and atherosclerosis, any justification for an imprudent diet is almost criminal. People arriving in the USA from Asia and Europe are mystified by the huge backsides of the average Americans. Plans are now underway to widen the seats in theaters and on airplanes. Dr. Dean is a wonderfully interesting man who more often than not stands on solid ground. With respect to "Eat, Drink, and Be Merry," he has wondered into the swamp. If anything Americans don't need is coddling and encouragement for gluttony. People will die from the core message in this book.

Summary: Eat & drink, but don't waste time reading this book!
Review: I just don't get it. A former eye doctor turned jewler, painter, bus driver with zero clinical experience, who last saw a patient 3 decades ago, who hates everything that's not blessed by (real?) medical studies, who doesn't bother anymore doing the healthful things he used to do, is giving health advice!!? Dr. Edell has a good sense of humor which is evident in trying to peddle this book, but his advice is don't worry do things in moderation. This advice is good for those who don't want to take any control (or responsibility) for their own health. He obviously hates anything alternative even though most of the world has no problem with this for the past few thousand years and are seeking these things in record numbers today since its 1000 times safer than the profession of medicine he quit 30 years ago. Dr. Dean won't burp unless Harvard did a study. He is still a member of the flat-earth (medical) society--don't do anything unless its in a study in his drawer. This book is no big deal.

Summary: All the help without the hype!
Review: Dr. Edell's book is one in a million. With the conflicting medical advice continually reported by the popular media, one just doesn't know where to turn. I found this book to be refreshingly honest and full of sound information on everything from diet to sex to disease. He's not pushing anything except truth, common sense and moderation.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Full of refreshing common sense
Review: Thank god, no guru pushing his "8 Weeks To Ageless Body Navel-Gazing." Just funny, at times affecting, Dean Edell, who keeps his sense of humor and common sense about the whole subject of health (My son's being intact had a lot to do with Dr. Dean's longstanding opposition to routine circumcision). Nice work, Dean.

Summary: A straight-forward, useful book on health
Review: I saw Dr. Edell on the "Today in New York" program yesterday (Tuesday, April 27), and bought his book the same day. His sense of humor and refreshing tone kept me reading long past my usual bedtime. I was impressed with all of the research that had gone into the book - he doesn't jump on the bandwagon unless real studies have been done, not trials with 10 people that are paid for by the drug company. Eat, Drink, & Be Merry should be on everyone's book shelf - it's general enough to cover a lot of health topics, and specific enough to give real answers.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Common-sense advice for everyone
Review: Dr. Dean Edell is one of the most knowledgeable and intelligent speakers on the airwaves today; an oasis of smarts in the intellectually arid desert of '90s talk radio. Dr. Edell lifts the curtain on the hoary but cherished myths of both traditonal and alternative medicine, and his book is a must-read for anyone who is concerned about health.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: dangerous froth
Review: Is Edell anything more or less than a 19th century huckster peddling the latest fads cloaked in the jargon of medical science? A resounding NO! Only this time around he is not making the rounds in a horse and buggy but on America's airwaves.

His "bag" consists of criticizing others' opinions that do not fit into his laissez faire worldview: sex is good, eat drink and be merry is good, and your doctor is not as good as I am - bunk. Dangerous stuff...
