Rating: Summary: very sensible - on the surface Review: Mr Edell is a strange individual. He sounds intelligent, humerous, and sensible...unless you actually pay attention to what he is writing or saying! Then it becomes manifest that this individual is not quite sane. Why are most Blacks incarcerated? Because of "police racism", says "Doctor" Edell. Normal men are secretly "turned on" by watching homosexual men says Dr E. A mixture of good advice and madness. Do yourself a favor and save your money. There are a lot of better books to buy!
Rating: Summary: GREAT FACTS! EXCELLENT BOOK DR DEAN! I AM A FAN I AM! Review: This book is especially interesting and entertaining knowing Dr. Dean's style from his radio show. Dr Dean is an open minded, only-voice-in-the-wilderness- who bases his writing on fact. If you are ready for Health 101 and can HANDLE THE TRUTH this book is the best of it's kind. Dr Dean is an excellent writer. I am impressed!
Rating: Summary: Excellent book Review: The first chapter started slow, but once the gamut of health fads was scrutinized, the book became a great read. It flowed well, contained a lot of info, and was interesting. (I had no idea there was such a thing as steatopygia.) The best part about the whole thing is that, unlike the thousand of hucksters who populate our television sets, Dr. Edell is a scientist. He knows his stuff. If you really want to learn about health and fitness, then go do what Dr. Edell does -- check out the medical journals and science magazines. (If you're really serious you should get a load of how experiments run, and then engage in them.) And if you don't know anything about science and how it works (and are serious about your health), get out and learn! There are no easy answers here, no fads -- just the plain old insistence on going out and getting as much knowledge as you can, and then making informed health choices.
Rating: Summary: Unreliable and jaundiced Review: Bad writing, bad science, all in the name of healthy skepticism. If you are looking for something that tells you what to do, forget this book. It is just a collection of one individuals biases. The make of a good scientist is a questioning, yet open mind. Edell displays none of this.
Rating: Summary: In general, very sensible Review: I don't agree with Dr. Edell in all respects -- his discussion and dismissal of most "alternative healing" is very superficial. But I give this book 4 stars because of his thoroughly sensible approach to dieting and the purported "obesity epidemic." (The NIH recently redefined the guidelines for obesity so that their definition applies to about half the U.S. population, and now is issuing dire warnings about how "more Americans are obese today than ever before" ... DUH!!) In my experience, dieting, including pills, extreme calorie restriction, and "good food/bad food" fads, has caused far more health problems than obesity ever has. My family history is full of vigorous, healthy women who lived into their 80's and 90's but who, according to the NIH guidelines, would be considered "dangerously obese"! We'd all be healthier if we followed Dr. Edell's prescription for moderation -- in dieting as in everything else -- and for that reason I recommend the book.
Rating: Summary: Biased and unresearched in modern nutrition/naturopathy! Review: I would not recommend this book. He is probably an intelligent man(memorizing the drugs of his profession takes dedication) but has no stand on nutrition/quantum physics/biochemistry in which to have a valid opinion in the areas of nutrition(fats/oils, supplements, detoxification etc.) naturopathy(homeopathy, chiropractics, herbology, reflexology etc.) His "pushy" writing style is offensive, blunt, biased, closeminded. On the positive side this book is written in great laymen style. So is the newspaper! Do yourself a favour buy some organic produce with your money instead of purchasing this book! Corey
Rating: Summary: Long live Dean Edell!!! Review: Dean Edell is one of the few health "experts" not obviously motivated by some hidden agenda. Much like in Catherine Dunne's essential classic "Interior Designing For All Five Senses" I think Dr. Edell's insights are simply profound and life altering.
Rating: Summary: True to the Scientific Principle. Extremely readable. Review: This book can change your life, in truly positive ways. The truths Dr. Edell espouses are irrefutable, rejected only by those technophobes who are stuck in the place Dr. Edell was thirty years ago. Read the reviews of the few naysayers, and you'll see those friends Dr. Edell referenced from that time thirty years past. If you heed the message he sends, this is probably the last lifestyle opinion book you'll ever need.
Rating: Summary: A must-read if you only read one health book Review: With a wide range of experience, a phd, and no current patients, Dr. Edell spends pretty much all his time reading and evaluating actual scientific research (how many practicing doctors can keep up with the tons of journals?). Those who snub the book will do so because they don't trust "so-called scientific studies," or because they think that just because much of the world uses "alternative" medications that they must all work, without a shred of proof to show for it- real proof. He's quite open to alternative medications that pass muster and suggests some, but is largely wary of unproven "cures" Hey, it's nice to know that in reality sharks *do* get cancer, and that acupuncture worked whether patients got needles stuck according to the charts or not. An excellent book- you won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: Registered Dietitian gives this book 2 thumbs up! Review: If you constantly fall for the latest fad, you won't like this book. If you search for medical miracles you won't like this book. If you don't yet see the irony in your behaviors you won't like this book. It's got all you need--common sense. Why do we hate it so much? Well, because that can't be all there is!!! Can there? Why criticize Dr Dean for citing scientific studies? How can that be worse than a book full of testimonials? I've wandered the beaten path of alternative therapies, but find science to be a giant turn on! Dr. Dean aroused my scientific curiosity again, and he can teach you a few things too (just don't forget the "Be Merry" part). I'll recommend this book to most of my patients--in the interest of their improved health!
