Rating: Summary: Common sense + science= happier, healthier you. Review: By utilizing straight talk and scientific studies, Dr. Dean has written an important and immensely readable health book without all of the BS that you find in others. He tells you what you probably already expect- you kookie "I'll just eat protein and fat until I drop 40 pounds or my kidneys fail" folks, and shows how you may be better off improving your mental health instead of yo-yoing your weight every summer. The book is a nice combination of fact and amusing anecdotes that keep the pages turning. So grab a carrot, turn off the T.V., and get MERRY.
Rating: Summary: The TV doc helps you stop worrying and enjoy life ! Review: Dr. Edell hits a home run with this 304 page book that can really impact on your health and your quality of life. I liked the way he stresses your need to avoid taking every health-news story as gospel and trying to continually change your life style based on the latest "facts" you get from the media. We must use common sense in evaluating all the "fluff" that we read and hear about health on a daily basis. Dr. Edell helps us sort out the facts from the fallacies. His style of writing, often humorous, makes the volume a pleasure to read. You'll learn how to avoid jumping in on every new diet, herbal remedy, or exercise program. Let him sort out the real facts of the studies, medical journal articles, and media hype, to help you lead a more healthful, less stessful life with the least effort. A great book.
Rating: Summary: This is the best health book I have read! Review: As a fan of Dr. Edell's radio show, I was familiar with most of the topics dealth with in this book. If only more people could adopt his common-sense approach to life and health, the world would be a happier place. I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it especially to anyone interested in a good overview of how to be healthy and happy. The last chapter has some profound insights and great analogies. To quote him, he describes, "Your life is a necklace, experiences strung together like beads. Your memories of these beads really define how you feel about your life at any given moment." He says not to obsess about things you can't control and to be smart about the things you can. A great medical reference, a great frame of mind.
Rating: Summary: This guy ACTUALLY reads JAMA and other impotant journals. Review: Dr. Dean is well informed. He's a GOD in my physiology psychology department. Everything he writes or verbalizes is researched and verified before he puts it before his subjects as a truth.
Rating: Summary: Good book but tiring to read Review: Overall, this book was very informative and provided unique insight to a diverse range of health subjects. I appreciated Dr. Dean Edell's commentary and analysis on several health related issues, some controversial. But after 200 pages, I found myself tired of reading this book. I think it was partly due to how Dr Dean Edell wrote his analysis of issues or health stories that were either ridiculous or very serious. In some sections of the book, Dr Dean Edell's writing conveyed a serious mission to dispell a bad health story or prognosis. I found this informative and helpful but at times this book read more like the sermons of street preachers. Reading 300 pages written in this style can either invigorate or exhaust a reader. Despite the great subjects covered, I found myself very tired after reading this book that I probably will never have the energy to read another book by Dr Dean Edell again.
Rating: Summary: Best book on overall health and happiness Review: This was by far the best book I have ever read on the topic of general health. I have referred this book to everyone I know and see. It will greatly alter the readers view of excersize, nutrition, drugs, alternative medicine, and sex. His research on the topic is evident and the results are fasinating. A MUST READ!
Rating: Summary: Avec plaisir Review: How refreshing it is to read a health book that doesn't scare you. How great that someone could actually write a bestselling health book that's not about dieting.Dr. Dean presents such a rich infostream of great stories about health on-air...if you want to keep up to date about all the latest stories he's talking about on-air, you can visit his web site.
Rating: Summary: Dr. Dean rules Review: Dean Edell's book is a simple, easy to read, no nonsense book that covers everything from fitness, dieting, food and sex. Tired of the media influence that contributes to misperceptions about how to achieve healthy bodies, fed up with doctors who encourage fad dieting and other harmful "medical" treatments. Dr. Edell intelligently debunks these misconceptions based on evidence presented in prestigious medical journals and his experiences as a physician. This book will help change your health and fitness lifestyle, safely and enjoyably.
Rating: Summary: refreshing Review: I am more than halfway through this book, and I find it a refreshing change from health fad books that focus mainly on weight loss rather than nutrition for the sake of health. And the bit about the 'Maxi Mermaids' is especially touching. I love the message of demanding proof and challenging the average person to be a critical thinker...especially when it comes to a topic as important (and abused) as what to put in our bodies. Some of the generalized dates of when scientific medical practices became widespread have left me questioning...as well as some of the Dr.'s own statements, but the idea is the most important part: Think for yourself, and demand scientific evidence. Your body is too good to go without it. If you like this kind of critical writing, the book "Manufacturing Victims" by Tana Dineen is an interesting view on psychology. This certainly encourages everyone to look deeper before taking whatever advice blares from the TV, and the headlines of newspapers and fashion magazines.
Rating: Summary: Dr. Dean Edell is the GREATEST! Review: Wonderful book...great christmas present for everyone in your family
