Rating: Summary: Disappointing quicky! Review: As a huge fan of the Stephanie Plum series, I was really excited to see this new Evanovich book, 'Visions of Sugar Plums'. The title alone had me anxious to read it! Not only is it a "quicky" read, but a disappointing one. To me, this was easy way to throw a new book out on the market before the holidays to make some money. Evanovich may get the dough, but you do not get what you pay for with this book. Bring back Ranger, add more Morrelli and lose the 'alien' Diesel. I would not recommend this book, but will be on the lookout for new JE books in the future. I just hope there are no more attempts at a sexy sci-fi!
Rating: Summary: Not worthy of Janet Evanovich Review: I normally love the Stephanie Plum mysteries, but I haven't even been able to get further than the first chapter of this one --- so maybe it gets better. But so far it's amazingly stupid. And the book is so short I can't believe the publisher printed it. I wonder if the "editor", whom Evanovich cheers, actually wrote most of the book. Or maybe she just had to get a book out to please the publisher... I'd much rather wait for a good one. Don't waste your money on this one.
Rating: Summary: Stephanie is at it again Review: I love all of the Plum novels and eagerly await any new titles to add to my collection. This Christmas story was a little different in that this new guy Diesel has some kind of super power and needs Steph's help tracking down a guy who of course has a name similar to Santa Claus. All the usual suspects are in the book. There were alot of laugh out loud scenes and Steph is back on again with Joe (yeah!) I would definately recommend this book to anyone who has read the Plum novels but not a first time reader as you really need to know the history behind all the characters for this one.
Rating: Summary: Don't buy this book. Review: If you like the Plum series . . . don't buy this book. In fact, should there be more "Plums" in the future, I'm afraid this book will keep me from coming back. It effectively means the end of the series for me.
Rating: Summary: Very Disappointing Review: I was disappointed in Janet's Hard Eight but nothing compared with the disappointment in this book. She must have slapped it together overnight. I have loved her series of books but this is one book I can say that I was very glad was over in only 149 short pages.
Rating: Summary: Eagerly awaited, but disappointing Review: It's not often that I run to the bookstore and pay top dollar for a hardback, but I always make an exception for Janet Evanovich, who is one of my absolute favorites. This time, however, she is off the mark with a story that just never takes off and makes little sense. This new character, Diesel, is one dimensional and takes page time away from all of our favorites. Ranger is nowhere to be found and Morelli is too far in the background. I found it hard to care about the plot which was convoluted and, frankly, I didn't get it at all. I will look forward to the next Plum novel, though, #9. Janet, please don't fail me now!
Rating: Summary: What Happened? Review: I'm a big fan of the Stephanie Plum series. But, "Visions of Sugar Plums" was a terrible disappointment. It's a big switch of genre, as if Stephanie suddenly landed in a Dr. Seuss book like "How the Grinch Stole Christmas"! The weird mix of children's fantasy - superhero stuff in a Stephanie Plum novel was awful. It was extremely short, took about 3 hours to read - not worth what it cost. I'm going to have to be careful about future purchases of Plum novels. ...
Rating: Summary: "Some Holiday Cheer from Janet" Review: Shorter than a novel and longer than a short story, "Visions of Sugar Plums" is Janet's holiday gift to her readers. I smiled the whole time I read this book, which admittedly took just a couple of hours--but what a fun couple of hours. As Christmas approaches, only Stephanie Plum could get mixed up with a fugitive toymaker called Sandy Claws, his vertically challenged helpers, and an "otherworldly" hunk named Diesel whose task it is to bring the spirit of Christmas to the Burg. This book had such a wonderful nonsensical atmosphere, it was just the right antidote to thoughts of war and terrorism. Diesel reminded me a lot of Cary Grant in that wonderful 1940s film "The Bishop's Wife," where he plays an angel who magically appears during the Christmas holidays to help bring cheer to a bishop, his wife, and his parishoners. Read the book and enjoy!
Rating: Summary: XMEN or a Plum novel ?? Review: I was actually very dissapointed by this book. Evanovich is an amazing fiction/comedy writer...Sci/Fi...lets be honest..she is not. Im sure this was meant to be a break from the mold...a treat to her readers...but it left me sitting there giving one of Stephanie's famed "eye rolls". It felt rushed, and it just wasnt a good story...yes some laughs were there...but too short of a story, To XMEN like (maybe she had just watched the movie). I have loved all of her other books, and thought they were well written and maybe thats why I felt that this one fell short.
Rating: Summary: Janet Evanovich Meets Frank Capra Review: There is a new sub-genre in popular literature: the Christmas novella brought to you by, at first glance, unlikely writers. Last year it was John Grisham. In 2002 Dave Balducci and Janet Evanovich join in. The books are fun, probably over-priced, and sell well for a month or two. Imagine Bedford Falls morphing into the Burg. Jimmy Stewart's character is now Stephanie Plum. Zuzu is now Mary Alice, the kid-horse niece. And the rumpled angel is now a blond, pony-tailed hunk who pops unannouced into Stephanie's bedroom. (Of course, that isn't exceedingly rare!) The book doesn't make a whole lotta sense (fantasy desn't play fabulously well in Jersey, I guess). But it is good fun. There is a character named Sandy Claws. Grandma Mazur has a new stud muffin who is quite a handful. And Stephanie, frantic about messing up and missing another Christmas, ends up in bed with Joe Morelli. Which makes it a great Christmas. This is a good read on a chilly early winter evening. And to all a good night!
