Rating: Summary: I wouldnt read a book about her Review: I wouldnt buy a book about one soldier that was in war, but i would buy a book that had stories about all pow's that was in Iraq. She isnt any more special than the other pow's. Its real sad to see that America thinks she's an icon when people in the war have died. What about them they deserve to be respected more by media and across this nation. I have respect for all the soldiers that have fought for this great country.
Rating: Summary: NOT a Hero..... Never Review: A disgrace. Lynch is safe at home making money while others are dying on the battle field. This story is written in an overly dramatic tone and reads more like fiction. It appears that incidents are included for drama rather than the truth. Some of the run-on sentences don't fit well. Not a good read.
Rating: Summary: Nothing But Bush Propoganda! Review: For what this young woman went through, this country should be proud of her strength and will to live, not only to once again see her loved ones, but to tell this story. The book itself is a wonderfully written work, unflinching in its detail and honest about its subject. Unfortunately, Ms. Lynch is being treated like a Queen not for her ordeal and celebration of her survival, but because the Bush Administration needs a P.R. hook to gain public confidence again. This book is just another wrench in the propoganda machine that's being shoved down everyone's throats. This book, along with Mohammed Odeh al-Rehaief's memoir and that fictitious t.v. film (that Lynch herself even called a travesty of lies and ironically was produced by a network owned by a corporation that has heavy ties to government contracts in the rebuilding of Iraq)...November 2003 is beginning to look like March 2003 all over again. The Bush administration's feeling the heat the world over for the tragic events of late in Iraq, with ZERO results coming from billions of dollars spent and hundreds of lives lost. So, what better way to rah-rah the country back into patriotic spirit than to publish a book about their cherished P.R. miracle. I'm very glad I purchased and read this book. Lynch is an American hero on many levels, but I just wish the government she and thousands of others are risking their lives for would highlight her heroics based on those facts instead of an effort in getting their little frat boy back into office for four more years. On that end, maybe this book should have been published on October 2004...just in time for the election. Hmmmm.....
Rating: Summary: Jessica, show some gratitude Review: This book provides the background of famous patient of war Jessica Lynch. It's important to know the up bringing of the type of person who would publicly belittle the brave special operations people who rescued her. The rescuers took no chance for failure in her rescue and she says that the risks were overstated. Rick Bragg is a good writer but this should be the story of the 507th and not the Jessica Lynch story. Jessica Lynch is said to have recieved a million dollar contract for her story, she would do well to remember the words of WWI Medal of Honor awardee Sgt. York who when offered such contracts said "My uniform's not for sale."
Rating: Summary: The real story, at last! Review: This book is surprisingly even-handed and fair-minded. Jessica Lynch comes off as likeable, a little naive, and brave in a way that's totally different from the "Rambo Jessie" that the government talked about. (I don't know what "griff44" is talking about below because Lynch specifically says that she feels uncomfortable with people describing her as a hero.) Bragg is a great writer, and this book is about a person, not a legend or anything like that, so I think it'd be an enjoyable read for anyone regardless of their feelings about the war itself.
Rating: Summary: There are many types of heroes Review: This author wrote this book with a simple and staccato tempo to give the reader the tone of what it must feel like to be a simple country girl who lived a simple life and then was thrown into an extraordinary circumstance. I don't remember anywhere in this book where she states that she thinks she is a hero. If anything, she commented that she resents that the media and/or the army used her as a PR gimmick for the war campaign. Why pick on this young lady? While she layed helpless in a hospital this media hype was building around her. She didn't create it. People need heroes, God only knows there are so few. Nowadays, we make heroes out of movie stars, sports figures and pop singers. Not exactly good role models, unless, of course, you like your heroes that end up in jail or dress like hookers. A definition of a hero is not only someone who gives up their life for another but, it is also at times, merely just an ordinary person that goes through a life changing experience, learns a lesson and then teaches this lesson to others. True, she is not a warrior-hero. Even I wished she had picked up her gun and fought back and I'm sure this gives more fuel to the critic's argument of women in the military. But regardless of that she still was there, in Iraq, in that time and place and having that adventure and that simple country girl experienced something that very few have gone through.
Rating: Summary: Enough fiction - let's get the facts Review: After having publicly denied the official "heroic rescue" version concocted and directed by military officials, Jessica Lynch desperately needs to spice up her ordeal to make some money from it. So despite all previously official medical facts and inquiries into how she was really treated at the Iraqi hospital (see e.g. BBC program) the new "sensations" involve rape and a ludicrous near-amputation story. Very uninspired indeed.
Rating: Summary: Tragic Yes, Hero No Review: While the book chronicles the terrible circumstances surrounding the capture and injury of Jessica it goes too far when categorizing her as a "hero". I would not wish what she went through on my worst enemy, but in this instance she was injured while doing a job in which the risks had been identified and communicated. Heroes are ordinary invidividuals who go far above and beyond the call of duty, circumstance, and responsiblity to assist others while ensuring their welfare, Jessica is not a hero but an unfortunate young woman caught up in a terrible web of circumstance. It was an easy read.
Rating: Summary: A Proud American Hero Review: The story of Jessica Lynch and her Ordeal is Excellent! She has given greatly to our Country and this book should be read by all.I found it well written and very inspiring to say the least. Let us, as we read this work, imagine the sacrifices and pain of Jessica, but also of all the others who have given all they have alongside Jessica. She is one of many who sacrifice for Our Freedoms. This is an Excellent book and highly recommended.
