Rating: Summary: Horrible! Review: Patriotism is one of the only acceptable forms of pride today, and I wonder if that is right.... This book may make you feel better about this country that we live in, but it is just a cozy blanket of nationalism for this harsh world we must survive in. I wonder how being born in a certain country makes it right to say how much better it is than the rest of the world. Why do we have the national anthem before every sporting event? (now we know that some percentage of almost every team we have here is comprised of some percentage of foreigners) I'll go the opposite way of this book and ask that people can just accept that people who live in other countries are just as precious as those who live here!
Rating: Summary: Refreshing antidote to modern hysteria Review: Post 9/11, the Bush administration and allies have brought forth the assumption any questioning of their objectives is tantamount to treason against the country itself. Consequently, patrotism has become twisted to suggest support and compliance with the policy goals. The equally famous daughter of the 35th president, Kennedy has ample ground to make a political platform within this book. To her credit, she does not, instead reaching beyond the core group of people sharing her own political ideologies, in a time when this principle is all but forgotten by all political players. Whether you fully agree with a fellow American, you can learn from their ideas (and vice versa) if only willing to open your heart and mind. The reprint nature of the material within this book means people do not neccesarily learn Ms. Kennedy's own policy positions (although she may eventually run for office herself) but we are also spared the cloyingly simplistic view of flawless leaders too often bundled into political inspiration books, especially in these trying times. For a generation that has too often heard the word 'patriot' used as a divisive political tool to root out difference, this book was a refreshing antidote.
Rating: Summary: Well worth it Review: This book is a comprehensive survey of what it means to be a Patriot in America today. There's also an album "A Patriot's Songbook" which serves as a nice accompanying piece.
Rating: Summary: A tribute to the USA's heritage Review: This book is a magnificant reminder of our country's heritage. This compilation is an eloquent work reminding us of the ideals and principles upon which this great and beautiful nation was founded as well as the sacrifices made for us and future generations to reap. The author, in her genuinely sincere and self-effacing manner, reminds us of the foundations of our freedoms, moral fabric, and to cherish our privileged heritage. Anyone who treasures freedom and democracy should read this book.
Rating: Summary: Once again, the arrogant Kennedys Review: This is nothing but sheer nonsense. I've seen better handbooks on patriotism than this one. I'd much prefer George Grant's "The Patriot Handbook" any day. I wish the Kennedys would go away and allow the Democrats to recover. The more the Kennedys and Clintons interfere with their drivel, the more the Democrats will lose for years if not decades to come.
