Summary: An excellent read!
Review: Wow! I am not one who reads a lot. As a matter of fact, I have only completely read two books in my 26 years. The first was a required text in high school, and the second (A Time To Kill) a required text for college. Though I was required to read this I found it to be very enjoyable. With the end of each page, I wanted to continue reading and was disappointed when I reached the end. Please don't watch the movie until you have read the book. The movie does not do this story justice. I look forward to continuing my new desire with Mr Grisham's next book!

Summary: Find Time to Read A Time To Kill
Review: This book was great! I loved it! Every chapter was awesome. I own the movie, but it does not do the book justice. It may have taken a while to read but the wait was worth it.
It is a story of two men on opposite sides of the racial line trying to come together to achieve justice. Based in Mississippi, the racial hatred in the small town of Clanton is suddenly stirred when two drunk and stoned rednecks decide to rape a little ten year-old girl. The biggest problem about that is that she is black. With the love of his daughter, and the thought of the rednecks going free, Carl Lee Haley decides to take matters into his own hands and become the towns most popular vigilante by killing those two boys.
The events that follow take Carl Lee and his white attorney on a case that neither of them will ever forget.

Summary: A very good book and a better end
Review: The story of the book is amazing, the people doesn't judge a person, judges a human race, and that you can see at the end of the book, is one of the best ends I ever read.

Review: A Time to Kill, by John Grisham, is a suspenseful and poignant novel that keeps you on your feet. When Carl Lee Hailey's ten-year-old daughter gets raped and almost killed by two white men he does what any loving father would do; make sure the men get what they deserve for harming his daughter. Ironically the case goes from two white men being on trial, to a black father on trial for the deaths of the two men that raped his daughter. From an almost all white town in Mississippi Carl's chances look slim to winning his case. Jake Brigance, hired to be Carl Lee Hailey's lawyer, is determined and arrogant. He has few doubts about the case but is planning on winning it on an insanity case. Jake, who has a young daughter his own, agrees with what Carl did to those men. Tension is growing in Clanton Mississippi. The KKK gets involved, people die, and the case gets more gruesome. Overall this book showed me what it would be like to be living in Clanton Mississippi during this capricious time. It would be a tough decision to have to sit on the jury bench and decide whether or not to convict Carl Lee Hailey of murder or not. He did what any good father would do, but he did commit a terrible crime.

Review: A Time To Kill, by John Grisham, is the story of a black man whose young daughter was brutally raped by two white, southern "rednecks". This book dramatically shows the reality of the racism that is evident in the South, even today.
Carl Lee, the father of the young girl, is a black Vietnam War Veteran. He lives in Mississippi with his wife and children. One afternoon when Carl's young daughter, Tanya, was walking home, she was abducted by the two rednecks, beaten and brutally raped.
The men were brought to trial. The jury, the witnesses, the judge were all white. Carl, expecting a verdict of not guilty, went to the courthouse armed to take his own revenge. After shooting the men he is arrested for murder and held for trial.
During the trial scene's you could feel the emotions of the people in the courtroom, the anger, the sadness, and the helplessness. Whatever the emotion it could be felt.
Carl's bold act of revenge and the trial kept me reading and trying to anticipate what the outcome would be. This book took me on a roller coaster of emotions. I could only imagine the anger and helplessness that Carl must have felt having his daughter violated in such a brutal way. This was a brilliantly written book that I would recommemd to all readers.

Summary: A Time to Kill, A Time to Buy
Review: A Time to Kill by John Grisham takes place in Southern Mississippi near Memphis, Tennessee. The story revolves around Jake Brigance, a lawyer who's defending an African-American named Mr. Carl Lee Hailey Jr. He openly shoots two caucasian boys as they were on trial for raping Mr. Hailey's daughter. Now, Mr. Hailey is on trial for the murder of the two boys and Jake Brigance is facing off with Rufus Buckley, the District D.A for the twenty-second judicial district. With the trial nearing, death threats and burning crosses have become a regular accurance with the Ku Klux Klan back in Ford County. An informant, known only as Mickey Mouse, keeps the cops notified of where the klan will strike next. John Grisham used multiple literary elements. For example, the burning crossed set by the KKK at Jake Brigance and the potential jurors houses were symbols of the Ku Klux Klan "politely suggesting" that they do not vote not-guilty for Carl Lee Hailey Jr's murder trial. A Time to Kill was flooding with suspense! Everytime I put down my book my mind would be on nothing except the story. I would be up until eleven, twelve O'Clock at night because I couldn't put down the book, and the only way to stop reading would be to fall asleep in teh process with the book still draped in my fingers. A main theme, or central message, was that of racism. Throughout the book it was argued inbetween characters that if Carl Lee Hailey Jr. was white he would not be on trial. I have an interesting theory on the element of tone. I am an avid watcher of Law and Order. On the television show the District Attorney (or DA) is portraid as the protagonist. Through a diference of obvious artistic opinion, the DA in A Time to Kill is portrayed as the antagonist. A highly hated man who is just after publicity and a seat as governor. The General mood of A Time to Kill is gloomy. The main settings that cast a gloom glow are the jail, victims of the KKK, and Jake Brigance bustiling run-down office. Mr. Grisham works exceptionally well with suspense, and being a past-lawyer himself, writes excellent courtroom dramsas that keep you yearning for more. I also enjoyed The Client, which is my favorite book and Runaway Jury, both by John Grisham. I am a big fan of John Grisham, and I find A Time to Kill to be one of his best. I recommend it most highly, and personally you'd be a fool if you let this novel pass you by.

Summary: Grisham's Greatest
Review: John Grisham did an absolutely wonderful job on his book "A Time to Kill." It was the most engrossing book that I have ever picked up. Ignoring precedents, Grisham addresses one of the biggest problems in America, racism. With the story of a young black girl being raped and a father willing to take the law into his own hands, Grisham grabs your heart and breaks it in half. He also exposes many prejudices in people and many faults in our system. He uses highly emotional events and the ignorance of many as a means to make people realize how it feels to be on the receiving side of racism. No one can read this book and not feel the same as this girl's father, black or white. He makes everyone realize that they would to the same thing in a similar situation, and then you put the book down and happen to remember that she was black.

Summary: Still his best work
Review: Maybe it's not as polished as later works, but I still felt the most with this one. I think it should be read first if you haven't already read 'The Firm' or any of the other bestsellers that Grishom seems to write with ease. The jury scene when the protagonist asks the other members to close their eyes and listen is very powerful and makes the major point of the book. As for the movie made from this book, it's the one that seems to come closest to what the book was trying to say. If you are only going to read one Grishom, or haven't tried one yet, this is the one.

Summary: A Time To Kill
Review: 10- 08-01

" A Time to Kill," written by John Grisham is an interesting and touching novel. The novel takes place in Mississippi during the late 1900's when America was struggling with the division of blacks and whites. The main characters are Tanya Lee, Carl Lee, and Jake. Tanya and Carl Lee were both African Americans who had suffered from racial violence. Carl's daughter, Tanya who was ten years old, was raped and almost beaten to death by two rednecks that supported the KKK. Carl became crazy when he found out what had happened to his little daughter. He then saw the two rednecks at the courtroom and shot and killed them. The story continues about the court trial to see if Carl Lee is put to death for killing the rednecks or walks as a free man. The only problem about this situation is that in Mississippi, whites dominated everything and so Carl doesn't have a good chance of winning the case. Jake is Carl's white attorney who risks everything to set Carl free.
I recommend this novel because it's very interesting and it involves a part of history. The novel shows the cruelty of whites toward blacks. But, is also shows how some whites risked their lives for the rights of blacks. There was a part of the book that I liked because it helped me visualize the violence on the streets between whites and blacks. During the trial of Carl Lee, the KKK terrorized blacks and the people who supported them. The KKK burned houses and burned crosses and placed them on people's lawns. The last day of Carl's trial, half of the street was filled with the KKK and whites, while the other side was filled with blacks. This event gave me a clear description about the KKK and how violent and divided the people were. The novel is dramatic and keeps its reader anticipating for more.

Summary: Justice Will Prevail
Review: John Grishams A Time to Kill is definitely a book of suspense. It keeps the readers wanting to turn the pages. The most inhumane crimes have been committed in a southern Mississippi town. This town is full of racism. Where the community is 85% blacks. The Klu Klux Klan is rising from the south once more. They terrorize home and other people's lives. A young black girls father takes justice into his own hands by killing the two repulsing men whom brutally raped his ten-year-old daughter. If you like graphic details and many crucial moments this is the book for you. One woman determined to prove that 'all men are created equal' drastically changed the outcome of the story. With all of the determination that Grisham shows throughout his characters it creates a very rational and attention grabbing finale. I would recommend this book to anyone. It teaches a great lesson of justice and the cruelty of racism in our world today.
