Rating: Summary: John Grisham at His Best Review: John Grisham has created yet another masterpiece with this thrilling story of a family destroyed by a rape. This was an excellent example of his writing skills.
Rating: Summary: good, good, goooooooooood Review: Although appearing slightly ammateurish at times, with undeveloped charactors playing central roles, and the hero being portrayed as an uneducated murderer, this is an excellent read and great tale that i reccomend to all.
Rating: Summary: The movie is junk compared to the book Review: The book is great (I could not believe it started for Grisham as a hobby). DO NOT WATCH THE MOVIE!!
Rating: Summary: A Time to Kill Review: Grisham's novel A Time To Kill is another example of his writing ability. It is a great story, but differs slightly from his other novels due to the lack of the twists in the plot. This book is still a great one, but I beg to differ with another reviewer who claims that this book tops The Firm. The Firm and The Partner both beat this book out, even if ever-so-slightly. For a first time reader, I suggest The Firm or The Partner, but otherwise this is a fine book and worth the money (as are all of Grisham's novels).
Rating: Summary: Gut-wrenching, riviting Review: Rarely am I hooked with a gut-wrenching reaction upon reading the first page, let alone the first paragraph, as I was with this book. A 10-year old girl's vicious, heinous assault evokes a vigilante response from her father. Thus begins the trial both in and out of the court room. Is the murder of the two assailants of this little girl an act of temporary insanity or justifiable homicide? Therein lies the question that becomes unraveled in this riviting story. Set in Mississippi, the characters include a pompous district attorney who uses this case for his own egotistical and political gain; a sympathetic defense attorney with integrity who puts his client first before his legal fees; a law clerk/student with liberal ideas and notions, wit and smart legal savy; the Ku Klux Klan, members of the black community from around the state, the media and the National Guard. One would think this is a setting out of the civil rights movement of the 60's, with scenes of demonstrations, rioting and killing of innocent people. This story in fact takes place in 1989 (the year the book was published). My only critique is that the book was a bit lengthy at times. But overall, it's worth the read from beginning to end.
Rating: Summary: Great novel! Review: I first read this novel when Grisham just started to become big- 1993. I read this one fist and am glad that I did as it is truly unique from his other thrillers. I recently reread and found it slightly lacking, but still a great read. You can tell that Grisham's writting isn't as polished, the story is a little slower. However, it is a great story. IT si truly a courtroom drama. With insights in a grand jury, expert testimony, and closing arguments. Very much like To Kill a Mockingbird, to which I always felt Grisham aspired. I always thought that the protagonist, Jake Brigance, was one of the finest that Grisham wrote, but now realize that he is flawed. He risked his family's life for fame, not justice. All in all, this is worht reading (and rereading!) I still love Grisham and always look forward to his new novels!
Rating: Summary: Good First Attempt Review: Grisham's first book. Certaintly a must for a loyal fan. Since there are plenty of reviews saying the plot, I'll skip that and go to my opinion. To start off, I would give this book 3 1/2 stars, but for a first attempt it deserves that little boost. One would note that most great author's first attempts are complete failures, however "A Time To Kill" is a pleasent difference from the norm. "A Time To Kill" is a great book with its ups and downs. Grisham described the emotion and turmoil perfectly, like an artist putting the suttle intricacies on his finest work. I really like the fact that Grisham ventures toward a plot that most writers are afraid to grab because of the politics involved. Its a nice story that is emotionally compelling and reviels the truth about modern issues such as racism, violence, and vigilante justice. Now for the bad. Some of the characters are really unnecisary and their place in the story could have been improved or cut out intiarely. Grisham could have extended the trial. He seemed to have rushed the trial, even though it is the climax of the story...The huge climatic surprise that makes a Grisham novel a true Grisham novel was just non-existent. Don't get me wrong, this is definently one of those that really deserves its place on that special shelf. Give it a read, this wonderful first attempt deserves it.
Rating: Summary: uniting Review: This was my first John Grisham novel.I was totally 'smittened' by this book. The novel begins with a heart wrenching details of a horrific rape...that devastates a typical american family trying to get by on an honest living and it also arouses 'racists'tingling that never really left the society...what makes the tale interesting and gripping are the social fibers Grisham employs in the plot...one has to choose between right and wrong...but it entails going against the regular sterotypes that govern the rural racially divided state in which this novel is set.The young lawyer who represents a symbol of positive change arrests your admiration and seek to reflect the message that all families and people on earth experience trauma and it is only as a united force that everything good on earth can overcome evil.Read this novel and bask in its message the 'world is one.'
Rating: Summary: His first book and my very favorite Review: Along with The runaway Jury, this is JGs best book by far. I've read it more than 4 times and I'm still gripped to the story. Small southern town gets shocked with the rape of a 10 year old afroamerican girl by two white fellas. Some days later it gets even more shocked as her father slaughters them both at the courthouse. It then goes a thrilling story about this poor man's lawyer struggle for saving him from the capital punishment and all the implications that may imply for him... Although this was his first book, I still believe it's unparalled...
