Summary: A Time to Kill
Review: A Time to Kill is one of John Grisham's best selling books. It takes place in Ford County, in the late 1970's and early 1980's. The book is about two white men who raped a black girl. When her father finds out who raped her, he kills the men and accidentally shot an officer. He was convicted for two capital murders and aggravated assault on an officer. It's the biggest case in Ford County in twenty years. Everyone gets involved in the case, from family and friends, black people who doesn't know the family, the Klu Klux Klan and reporters from all over the nation.
The main character in this story is Carl Lee Hailey. He is the father of ten-year-old Tonya Hailey, who was raped by two white men. He kills the two white men and is put on trail. Some other main characters are Billy Ray Cobb and Pete Willard, the men who raped Tonya, Ozzie Walls, the sheriff of Ford County, and Jake, Carl Lee's lawyer.
The book had some gruesome parts in it, but other than that it was a very good book. I liked the book because there were a lot of things going on. I don't like books that are just on one thing. Also, I liked the book because it was very detailed, expect the gruesome parts. Lastly, I liked it because it was about the law. I like to hear other people's opinions and in this book, you get a lot of opinions.
I would definitely recommend this book to another person. I wouldn't recommend it to children because some parts of the book was not PG13. I would recommend it to someone who is interested in the law or just anyone that wants to read a good book.

Summary: Fast paced drama
Review: I saw this movie a few years ago and after reading the book, I couldn't believe just how much more descriptive the book is. Some sections are actually quite disturbing.
On a hot summer day in Clanton, Mississippi, two rednecks beat and rape ten year old Tonya Hailey. After hearing about what has happened to his only daughter, Carl Lee decides to take justice into his own hands by killing the two rapists.
Carl Lee is then brought to trial for the murder of the two men. Everyone from the Klan to the NAACP gets involved.

Summary: What's wrong with this picture?
Review: Grisham seems to think his story represents a picture of racial justice. In the book, a young black girl is raped by two white men in an attack so terrible she will probably have emotional and physical scars for life. The men are quickly arrested, but as they are led to jail the girl's father (Carl) shoots them both to death. Grisham shamelessly plays the race card. Anyone who thinks Carl is guilty is branded as a racist. Carl's defense is based on the fact that setting Carl free is an act of racial rightness. He's guilty, folks! No matter how much he (and the readers) hate the men who brutalized his child, it is wrong to act on these feelings, especially since the men are in custody and will be tried for their crimes. The book tries to erect flimsy excuses for Carl's defense, such as the theory that a white killer of a black rapist would likely be set free (in the 1990's? A child's rapist? I'll bet!) The book ignores the fact that the rapists, no matter how disgusting they and their crimes are, deserve a fair trial under American law as much as Carl does. This book is shameless pandering.

Summary: Quite a book!
Review: My dad supplied me with this book saying it would be an interesting read and that I would enjoy it. I must say that it is quite interesting, and I have enjoyed it so far. I have no time to read, therefore, I'm only 350 pages in, but so far it's been great. Grisham's use of multiple plots and transferring between them throughout the story keeps things interesting in a book full of courtroom drama. I wouldn't be interested anymore if he didn't write the book the way he does. Vivid imagery appears in this book every page, as well as intriguing plot twists that keep you on the edge of your seat. This book is a good read for adults, and isn't a difficult read at all. Everyone else who has read this book said it was good, and I'm going to agree with them on that. This book was a bestseller years after it was published! I'll rate it 4 out of 5 stars, and coming from a critic like me, that's not bad at all.

Summary: Grisham's Best
Review: After The Firm became so incredibly popular, I decided I should read it, just to know what everyone was talking about. But since I always like to read books in the order they were written whenever possible, I decided to read A Time to Kill first, and I'm glad I did.

This book was just great, it had everything you could ask for. A sympathetic figure at its center, a protagonist who was a good guy and easy to root for, and plenty of bad guys that were easy to dislike. Add to that an action-packed plot, and the result is a book you just can't put down.

I've read all of Grisham's books so far, but this one still remains the best as far as I'm concerned.

Summary: A Time To Kill
Review: This book is awesome. There I said it. Anyway, while on her way home, little black girl is raped by two sick rednecks who find this pleasurable. She's put in a hospital and the father decides to take matters into his own hands. He blows the two men away with a gun he bought from a gangster and ends up in jail. This event gets the attention of a young lawyer named Jake Brigance who is getting legal advice from drunk has been lawyer. He decides to help the man and faces the consequences of getting death threats via the telephone. Its a powerful book and i must say its one of my favorites.

Summary: Fantastic, a must read.
Review: This is the 2cd grisham book I read (after the firm). I loved it. Full of detail, emotion. It left you asking the very same question, what would you do if i was your child. I could really get inside the characters they were deep and REAL. A must read.

Summary: Good read, movie was better. Good travel book.
Review: This was a good concept and very well written. I started reading it after seeing the movie. While traveling I read over 200 pages in one day. Grisham's books are always good to travel with because you can get lost in them. He really makes you feel as if you are a visitor to Clanton, Mississippi. He details the intricacies and intamacies of the small town. His charecters are believable. I can't comment on the suspense of the book, having seen the outcome prior to reading the book. However, there are many turns that the movie doesn't take that the book does. You learn more about Jake, Carl Lee, Lucian and others in the book than the movie and really get to know them. Some of Grisham's writing style brings the book down though. I think he overstates his point of racial tension and hatred with too much use of the N-word. The reason that I say the movie is better is more or less because they reach the conclusion through a better means thn in Grisham's book. However, it is a great read and well worth it if you are traveling or looking to occupy your time.
