Rating: Summary: This book is good for people outside US Review: I live in Asia. I watch a lot of movie that tell stories about court in America..but never really knew the system (trial jury...grand jury..) until I read the book..... thanks John.,,!
Rating: Summary: Grisham's best....I read for 9 hours straight Review: This is easily Grisham's best book. Instead of giving you a review, I urge you to go out and buy this book.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing and manipulative Review: This book was highly recommended to me, but it soon became a big disappointment. The plot revolves around a father, Carl Lee Hailey, a black man who avenges the rape of his daughter by two white men. Carl Lee obtains an illegal gun, breaks into the courthouse, and kills the men in broad daylight; in the process, he endangers the lives of others and wounds an officer. His trial is the primary subject of the book. The problem is that Grisham's inexperience as a writer causes the story to be severely manipulated. I find it impossible to believe that an officer who lost his leg when caught in the crossfire of a revenge killing would not only forgive the assailant but would cheerlead for him in his trial. The appearance of the KKK and the racism seen elsewhere are a feeble attempt to elicit sympathy for the father and to justify his actions. While I could sympathize with the heartache and anger he'd feel, I cannot applaud his decision to take the law into his own hands. I'm extremely disappointed that a law school graduate (Grisham) thinks that, "if it had been my kid I'd have wanted to do the same" is an adequate defense for possessing an illegal firearm, breaking and entering, two counts of first-degree murder (when you spend the night in the courthouse to wait for them, it's premeditated), reckless endangerment, and a few other laws.
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Book! Review: Grisham's first book surely shows the foundation for his literary work later. I am 15 and have read many many novels but this inspiring work stands out. It allowed me to think about how we in our society deal with racism, murder, and the response to a loved one being "shattered". Grisham does it for the first time as he later does again by giving us some of the greatest situations that keep us thinking, and he also gives us(or at least me) a novel with a suspense/law plot that keeps the pages turning at rapid rates.
Rating: Summary: BLAH! Review: This book was great at the beginning..but then at about the middle of the book it came to a haulting stop. I suggest that you go out and rent the movie. I couldn't even finish it...no matter how hard I tried!
Rating: Summary: interesting Review: This is an enjoyable book as it is engaging, exciting yet realistic. The author paints a balanced picture of the various characters, ie no one is seen as too perfect or too evil. There's also a great sense of humor which surfaces often and serves to lighten the heaviness of the story.
Rating: Summary: Quite possibly the best novel I have ever read! Review: Don't be fooled by a VERY poor movie. I hated "The Firm" but this is the best. The storyline and characters are some of the most believable that I have ever read. The unique sense of justice and conviction was evident. John Grisham truly believed in this subject matter and wrote it from his heart.
Rating: Summary: Don't be fooled by a VERY bad movie Review: My interest for the book was mainly because of the movie and I'm glad I read the book first. I thought The Firm was good but this is much better. I guess the first book is always the best one. There's a lot of Grisham himself in this book, inexperienced lawyer taking on a big case. But the story is so powerful and I couldn't put the book down. The character Jake Brigance is brillant developed and the story raises a lot of racial and justice issues that makes us feel disturbed whether Carl Lee was justified. I stayed up til 4am to finish this book - definite page turner!!
Rating: Summary: At Last, Justice Is Served! Review: This is Grisham's all-time best written book! If justice was served up more in this manner, crime would decrease drastically. We can all take a lesson about crime and racism from this book.
Rating: Summary: The only really good Grisham Review: Back before Grisham got commercial, he wrote this book, and it is by far his best. Sure, it is a tale about race and racism, good and evil, and law and justice. But at its heart, it a tale of revenge, which is what animates the whole book. Otherwise it would just be another in a series of legal thrillers. Read this Grisham, you won't be disappointed. But don't expect it to ever be this good again.
