Rating: Summary: It's a must read. Review: This book "A Time To Kill" was a great book. I don't read a lot, but this book I couldn't put it down. I loved the description. The story turns its own pages. Two thumbs up.
Rating: Summary: This book was a true five star book, it was breathtaking!!! Review: This book was a great book on the law and the court. It started out with a great beggining and ended with a great end. Don't think that this book is like one of Grishams other books. I read The RAINMAKER and I thought this one was significantly better. Grisham did a great job of showing us how hard it is to be a lawyer in a small town in the South. He showed us the hardships a young lawyer in the south who is trying to keep a law firm alive. The book showed us how hard it is to make money in a little town. One day you could have three thousand dollers come in and the next day you could have nothing come in. He made it seem like you were there in the court listening to the trial. Grisham accourtly showed us the racism in the south angainst the African American race. He was not afraid to use the racial slurs that there is in the south to make the book more real. Grisham did a great job of showing us in depth how it messes with your mind to be in trial. I was asstonished to how the lawyers reacted to the media. They all want to be the one who gets to the cameras first. I did not realize the rush to be the one who gets his name regonized first. Overall I give this book Five stars. I loved it and I hope you will enjoy it to.
Rating: Summary: The best Grisham book I've read! Review: I have read all of John Grisham's books that have come out so far in paperback, and by far, this is the best...no easy task as they are all wonderful! This book grabs the reader on the very first page and doesn't let go until the verdict is in! It explores moral avenues and forces us to reflect on our own values as human beings sharing this earth. I'm sure I would vote with the jury after hearing Jake's final arguments. Well done! (Also, the movie follows the book very closely. Normally, I do not enjoy the movies after reading the books; they just can't come close to Grisham's intent--but this one is marvelous!)
Rating: Summary: This book should be required reading for everyone!! Review: I love all of John Grisham's books, but this is my favorite one. He takes all of the reader's values and beliefs, and questions every one of them. This book makes the reader look deep within himself and examine his very soul. Everyone can grow from just reading "A TIME TO KILL". It can change how a person looks at himself and others and what we would all do in the situations presented in this book. It made me change in good ways. It can for all readers too.
Rating: Summary: Emotionally powerful; captures the reader's heart and mind. Review: This book was excellent. It showed all the types of racism and hatred that can arise from a small-town crime. It portrays a black American father who takes justice into his own hands after his daughter is brutally raped and beaten by two drunken white boys. It has been popularly mis-reviewed that she was killed, but she wasn't. She was severely beaten and recovered, although not fully. The young girl, Tonya, sat behind her father every day that he was in trial and supported him through everything. Jake Brigance, the lawyer who defended Carl Lee Haley, dealt with many hardships and heartaches throughout this trial. It was a brilliant novel and a very powerful and heart-wrenching story.
Rating: Summary: Definetely Grisham's best Review: After reading all of Grisham's novels, I have to admit that I think "A Time to Kill" is certainly his best piece of work. It is written with real feeling unlike his later novels which are prepared for the big screen. It may not have the excitement which his other novel possessed but it is a story which evokes great empathy. A brilliant read, pity Grisham doesn't write more of this style.
Rating: Summary: Refreshing Review: This was Grisham's first novel and at some points, the inexperience shows, but that doesn't stop this from being a really great book. After reading The Firm and The Pelican Brief, it was refreshing to read about a more of an everyday lawyer who hasn't been so successful and has to fight off the big time lawyers for the case of his life. I didn't like this book quite as much as The Firm, but it is in good company.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic - Definitely the best of Grisham's books!! Review: I've always enjoyed courtroom drama and novels. This is the best so far. The storyline is captivating, you actually play out the scenes in your mind as you read. The author adds humour to his writing and this makes reading a breeze. The numerous characters were well defined and bring life to the story. The relationship between the white lawyer and the black client, the hatred of the Klan for the blacks, the love of a father for his daugther - these provide the emotions for the book. It even arouses a non-American (like me)'s curiousity about the culture of a Southern state like New Orleans. Take my advice - Grisham's books are definitely better than the movies. This book is a must-read!!
Rating: Summary: best book I ever read!! Review: It's the first John Grisham book I've ever read and it has lead me to read his other books. It has also made me very interested in the Law. Hope more people would read it and enjoy it as much as I did.
Rating: Summary: Bad Movie, Excellent Book!!! Review: I was very unimpressed with the movie, but my friend told me that the book was much better. And it is. I almost cried at the beginning whn the horrible crime was committed. I would have done the same thing Carl Lee did. Don't be fooled by the movie. Read the book.
