Rating: Summary: Review of "A time to kill" by John Grisham Review: A Time to Kill; by John Grisham. If you like murder, suspense, tragedy, and gore this is the book for you. I must warn you that if you are faint of heart this wouldn't probably appeal to you. But if the things I listed above describe your type of book, I definitely advise you to read this. Clanton, Mississippi. The life of a ten-year-old girl is shattered by two drunken and uncaring young men. The mostly white town reacts with shock and terror at the inhuman crime. Until the father of the little black girl takes justice into his own hands. For ten days, as burning crosses and the crack of sniper fire spread through the streets of Clanton, the nation stands aghast as a young defense lawyer, Jake Brigance, defends the loving father trying to save his life, and then Jake must fight for his own. This tense, compelling, and emotional book is wonderfully written by the author of "The Pelican Brief" and "The Firm" and it proves to be right up to their standards. Putting aside the very flagrant language and the small amount of sexual activity it is still a fabulous book and it is very realistic. I loved it!
Rating: Summary: Grishams Best! Review: This was my first Grisham novel I have read and I was blown away. I'm only a freshman in high school but still enjoyed the book. Grisham can definently write dialogue and keep the pages turning. I would reccommed this book to anyone that enjoys legal and courtroom dramas.
Rating: Summary: Grisham's tale grips readers Review: Two white men beat, rape and almost kill a young black girl in Clanton, Mississippi. Her outraged father kills them in a vengeful rage. He is arrested and charged with their murders. Now the question of his guilt or innocence faces everyone involved. His lawyer, the sheriff, the judge and the jury all have to decide for themselves whether his violent act was justifiable in his circumstances. Considering the deep south location of the story and the time in which it takes place, racism plays a large role in the story. The question of the father's guilt is only compounded by the racial barrier. Grisham's story of justice, morality and racism grips the reader from the beginning. Although Grisham wanders at some points, the intricate plot pulls the reader through the slow points and towards the climax. Grisham's smooth and convincing style of storytelling greatly outweighs the slightly meandering storyline. This book is one of his best and is an intriguing and thought provoking look at our system of justice.
Rating: Summary: A TIME TO KILL Review: John Grisham's novel A Time To Kill was a very good novel because it kept me on edge, it was very descriptive, and it told about events that really happens in life.John grisham was very descriptive in this quote "She was ten, and small for her age. She lay on her elbows, which were stuck and bound together with yellow nylon rope. Her legs were spread grotesquely with the right foot tied tight to an oak sapling and the left to a rotting leaning post of a long-knecked fence." He used this detailed writing throughout the novel. He kept you on edge by talking about one story until it got very interesting then he switched to another story and the switched back to the other story. "The paramedics stopped in the yard when the front door opened and Carl Lee walked out with his daughter in his arms. He whispered gently to her as huge tears dripped from his chin. He walked to the end of the ambulance and stepped inside. The paramedics closed the door and carefully removed her from his embrace."This quote is proof that John Grisham knows how things happen in life and that he used this knowledge in his novel.
Rating: Summary: Bringing Out the Truth Review: Readers who like crime and justice would love A Time To Kill, by John Grisham. This book describe in many details about racism between black and white people in a small town in Mississippi. It is about a trial of a black man who murdered his daughter's rapists, which are two white men. Most whites want him dead; but if it was a white man trial where he murdered a black man, he would be set free. Racism is very strong, and it could not be erased from these people. If you want to know what happened to the man who is a hero to his people and some others, but a devil to white people, read the book.
Rating: Summary: A Time to Kill Review: I think is the best book I ever read, bein only thirteen. This book well portrayed some of the many hate crimes and racist acts happening today. I couldn't this book down, it was so well written. This book brought tears to my eyes. I hope for the people that read this book understand the things in this story are happening today all over the world.
Rating: Summary: Just Trying to Be Fair Review: I am putting my neck on the line by going against thegeneralconsensus here. I liked alot of the book. Especially thelawyer. But I cannot say it is one of the greatest books I have ever read. It is not even the best Grisham (I like The Client the best). The courtroom dialog was great and the tension was great. What kept me from giving the book higher marks was that I cannot condone what the father did, since he shot the innocent police officer. I found how Grisham downplayed the shooting of the cop to be a major omission of the book. The only justified homicide to me is in a self-defense situation. If the father had shot the men in the act of attacking his daughter, then I would have felt his actions justified. He did not even wait for the trial to play out before he decided to be judge, jury, and executioner.
Rating: Summary: Too close to the truth! Review: A Time to Kill, one of the best known novels of the last 15 years, is a courtroom drama by John Grisham, set in a small town in southern Mississippi. Jake Brigance, a young, white lawyer is hired by a murderer of two rapists who raped his daughter. Sound complicated? It is- the murderer is black and the rapists are (or were) white. Jake Brigance is given the impossible task of proving that Carl Lee Hailey, the black murderer, is innocent. Impossible, because of a mostly white county, because of the Ku Klux Klan which "lives again" in Clanton, because of a win-at-all costs prosecutor, because of the racism and hypocrisy of the Mississippi citizens and judicial system. This book illustrates how no matter how much the world tries to say they "celebrate their diversity" or "look past the differences," you have to look no farther than a small Mississippi town to see how untrue this is.
