Rating: Summary: A Real Thriller- I Highly Recommed This. Review: I love this book. That's probably the best way to put it. I really love this book. As a courtroom drama, it not only confronts the issue of whether or not we can take justice into our own hands, but also racism and child rape. It really makes you look inside yourself... maybe not me, as I'm not old enough to have children yet, but if you had a child that was raped, what would you do? This book makes an especially strong impression on me because I want to be a lawyer someday. I don't think I would want to be a "street lawyer," but just the same it tells me that being a lawyer isn't necessarily a peice of cake. As of now, this is the only Grisham novel I've read. But I can truely say that I will be reading more soon. Read this book. You won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: Grisham's Debut Review: A Time To Kill is the debut novel of the mega selling author John Grisham. Setting the basis of much of his future works, the book follows the story of a young Southern lawyer who has seemingly insurmountable odds stacked against him. Jake Brigance is the lawyer who represents Carl Lee Hailey in the small Mississippi town of Clanton. Carl's young daughter is viciously raped by a couple of rednecks. The rednecks are on trial, but Carl takes matters into his own hands and kills them. Carl is black and this incident has split the town along racial lines. Was is justifiable homicide or premeditated murder? Should he get the death penalty or be acquitted? Grisham is a lawyer so his intimate understanding of the way a lawyer approaches a case and how a trial unfolds is letter perfect. The book is a quick and easy read and highly enjoyable.
Rating: Summary: Guilty or Innocent Review: The book A Time to Kill is a great book. The way that we get the character perception is among the best of the best. Jake the lawyer reluctantly takes a murder case for a black man named Carl Lee. Carl Lee killed to boys that had devastated his family. Then Carl Lee was arrested and charged for capital murder. At the trial Jake calls a psychiatrist and he testifies that Carl Lee was insane at the time of the killing. The Prosecution argues that Carl Lee was acting in cold blood. The town of Clanton Mississippi was flooded with news reporters and people waiting to see the trial. The trial goes on and every day it looks more and more like Carl Lee is guilty. But, local radio stations called for rallies for every person willing to come to the Clanton courthouse and lobby for Carl Lee's innocence. Will Carl Lee be found guilty or innocent? Find out by reading A Time to Kill.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful in both its implications and in its literal style. Review: First I want to commend to review of the others. I thank them also. They deserve it. But I want to "add to the fire". The reason I love Grisham is thus: he is not only a regular person but he admits it. Lawyers being parisites. Mafia. Scenes of rednecks throwing glass at an innocent albeit surprised young black girl. The story was excellent. The only reason someone wouldn't like Grishams style is the following: 1. He talks about things we all heard of 2. He uses plain language 3. He is white 4. He is rich 5. His chapters have no titles 6. He shifts alot 7. He cuts off at the end 8. He writes too well Otherwise, Grisham is great. I would give Grisham ten stars "in a jiffy". He deserves it. I have "The Testament" and I want to read it again. I loved it. I know he writes about controversial things but he shows both sides of the story. In "A Time to Kill" we witness how issues as commonplace in the media as race/being black or white can divide and crush a small, white, albeit unknown Mississippi town and eventually unite the people, make them wonder what is going on. Which is why this book is so great. I read it. If I read a book that means it is good. Beleive me. I don't read much if I don't like what I am reading. On the edge of my seat, eh. Well, the fact is that John Grisham has only two books left. A Painted House and The Brethren. Those are the only two I have not scrutinizingly read. I should read them once I have my hands on my fathers credit card, which will happen hopefully...if I behave and stop writing reviews of books he probably didn't read (that's a good one, eh). Kudos to John Grisham. He built a baseball field and is a philanthropist, evidence that we are not reading the book of someone with a reputation for being rich and stingy. He gives money to causes. He could keep that money. He did not have to do that. He also translated some books into movies, so there's a negative. He also lives in Mississippi and Virginia, I think. All irrelevant information, you reckon. Read on. To conclude this essay on John Grisham's "A Time To Kill" I will say the following: it captivated me in its totality, vitality, and its breadth. I want to read it again.
Rating: Summary: A Great Total Package Review: This book is the story of Carl Lee Hailey, a black Vietnam veteran who killed the white men who raped his daughter, and Jake Brigance, the defense attourney who is his lawyer at the trial. The trial is an O.J. Simpson-like affair, with counrty-wide media coverage. Reporters flock to the small town of Clanton, Mississippi, and are alienated by the local citizens. It turns from a trial to a circus as the KKK, NAACP, and other groups use it to further their own agendas. Then Jake finds that his life is in danger after his house is almost blown up and a bullet meant for him hits a national guardsman. This book really hooked me. From the first page this novel caught my attention and kept it until the end. Its plot is compelling and believable, and its events are not farfetched. This is better reading than The Firm, and is an excellent introduction to Grisham.
Rating: Summary: Five stars, but.... Review: I really liked this one. Not because it was a particularily fine literary example, but because it is so much more honest than all his other books. You really get the feeling that he has infused the main character with everything from his own life and the plot is much more complicated that his later works. Also, it is fun to see a writer of such great talent as he works out the kinks in his style. You can almost hear him re-writing it as you read it.
Rating: Summary: I really enjoyed reading this book! Review: A Time to Kill is a book that I enjoy reading. It is mysterious and had me on my toes all the time. There are a lot of reasons why I was so interested in this book. Here is just some: The time of area was great. It made it more interesting being in that time than if it was in today's perspective. The whole story got me guessing every moment of the way. It kep me on the edge. Kept me wondering throughtout the whole book. The last reason is because I have always had interests in John Grisham's books. I would recommend this book to my friends and family. It's a interesting book if u like drama and mystery.
Rating: Summary: Review of "A Time to Kill" Review: "A Time to Kill" by John Grisham is a great thriller for a mature audience. Due to its graphic nature I recommend it for adults and those who can handle it. The commotion all starts in a small town called Clanton located in Mississippi. Carl Lee Hailey, the father of a small ten year old girl that is raped, beaten and demoralized by two men and she is left for dead. Carl Lee decides to take the matter into his own hands and shoots both men down in cold blood. Now instead of Billy Ray Cobb and Pete Willard being on trial for the rape of Carl Lee Hailey's daughter, he is now on trial for the murder of those two men. The question is now was Carl lee justified in killing these two men or should he go to jail for it? As you can see this book is a great thriller with many different turns in it. It was the national best seller its first year and it will keep you on the edge of your seat. Out of all of John Grisham's books I feel this is the best. I have read The Firm, The Pelican Brief, A Time to Kill, and The Runaway Jury. It's an easy book to get into and it will keep you hooked so you'll never want to put it down until you're done reading it.
Rating: Summary: BEST JOHN GRISHAM BOOK Review: A Time To Kill is one of the best books I have ever ever read. It is full of different issues like rape, murder, kkk, etc. The plot just keeps on building and building. Just when you think that it is about to slow down something else happens. I haven't seen the movie yet but if it's anything like the book it will be great. I recommend this book to everyone! I can't wait to read other books by John. I've read The Street Lawyer but it doesn't compare to A Time To Kill. His first and best book. READ IT!
Rating: Summary: Thriller Review: A Time to Kill is a very thrilling book by John Grisham. He shows the diversity between the blank and white Americans in the south during the time of segregation. Jake Brigance is a young lawyer waiting for his first big case of his career. Little does he know that his first major case may put him and his family into harms way. Brigance gets a case that the biggest lawyers in the world would only dream of. He gets the case of white versus black. His client, Carl Lee Hailey was accused of killing two white boys while they were being transported back to their jail cell. Hailey shot the two boys for a reason, a good reason he thought, and they had rapped his little girl. As the trial gets underway it brings out the worst in people. It also brings out the racial hatred in this small town of Clanton, Mississippi. The worst people it brings out is the Ku Klux Klan, a group that hasn't really shown their face around for the longest time anyone could remember. A Time to Kill is one of John Grishams greatest books. I have yet to read all of his books. Until I do, I think this book is the greatest book he has ever written. I would like to get the chance to read them all, until I do I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who is interested in reading about the variation of this nation.
