Summary: Ghost Soldiers
Review: This book is amazing. I appreciated the parallel story lines with the rescuers and the prisoners. This allowed me to breathe. When I first read this book, I was so emotionally involved, I had to put it down periodically for awhile to gather myself. There were times when I couldn't see the page. My mother was different, she was so gripped she couldn't put it down and read it straight through without stopping. Hampton Sides does a great job in creating a vivid picture of the realities of this aspect of the war. Yet, he doesn't go into the blood and guts and gore. He left a lot to the imagination. I appreciated that because my imagination is enough. I truly think that this book is a tribute to the soldiers, rescuers, the kind Japanese, and everyone who bravely faced the horrors of war. I highly recommend this book to any historian.

Summary: really close..
Review: All these torment and torture happened just 2miles away from where I live. I must say that the author's description about the locations and people are accurate. The "Cabu Bridge" that was blown up and of course replaced is the site where I used to play. The camp where so many have died is now a park and has a memorial tombstone. The Philippine and American flag flying 24 hours a day on the site now has a deeper meaning to me. I am disappointed why I never knew stories like this. Our high school history classes are so short that amazing and uplifting stories like this were never mentioned. I hope that the movie will push through. This is one sure way to let my own countrymen know and remember what terrible things happend during the WW2. I hope that young Americans will also read this book so that events like this will never happen again.

This book had touch me and made me proud. God bless the USA and the Filipinos. Life is wonderful, but without freedom it's the same as hell.

Please read this book and tell the story. You will never regret it. Thank you Mr. Sides.

Summary: Deserved Respect for our American Soldiers
Review: Ghost Soldiers is an excellent account of the atrocities faced in times of war and hits especially close to home, since the atrocities were committed against fellow Americans. I was totally engrossed in the book from page 2 of the prologue. Sides details the story of heroism of both the Rangers and the POW's that were faced with hardships (to put it mildly) for 3 and 1/2 years of captivity. Not only a fascinating read, but one that inspires and motivates as well. The strength, will and courage of these men should remain in the minds of Americans, and although these POW's became heroes at an extreme cost to themselves and their families, it is imperative that they never be forgotten. Thank you, Mr. Sides, for writing a story that helps deliver to the reader the deserved respect for our American soldiers.

Summary: Beautifully Written Depiction of Heroism
Review: What sets this book above the rest is the way it was written. As an avid history reader my complaint about most history books is the quality of writing and ability of the author to capture a story. This book has definitely silenced my complaints. The style of writing only adds to a breath taking story, one long forgotten. The immense detail, effort, and energy that went into this book is trully amazing. A definite worth while read and buy. After reading I recommended this book to everyone. And anyone who followed up on my advice has thanked me.

Summary: Bataan Death March and Rescue Mission
Review: A story about one of the most tragic and forgotten episodes in American History, The Bataan Death March. EVERY American needs to read this book in discovering the cost of our freedom and what WWII veterans were willing to do in protecting our liberty. If you have a patriotic bone in your body, you will read this book.

Summary: Non-Stop
Review: A non-stop book based on history not Fiction. It shows us the men and woman who sacrificed to give us the freedom that we take for granted today.

For a book on individual heroics even more amazing the Ghost Soldiers, I recommend "To Hell and Back" By Audie Murphy.

Summary: Good research and solid read
Review: This book lets the facts speak for themselves and they're pretty loud. It doesn't get caught up in a lot of hyperbole and the writing style is subdued. I'd recommend it for those interested in historical accounts of WWII and the Pacific theater in particular.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A remarkable page turner
Review: I can offer this book the highest recommendation. Particularly for someone with a limited knowledge of the Pacific theatre of WWII, it is an eye-opener for how similar atrocities went on at the hands of Axis powers. The story is told with a seamless blend, describing the approach of the rescue forces and the long years of the prisoners, coming to a remarkable climax.

This author has a gift for making words become visible pictures. His vivid descriptions give detail and the ability to feel very close to the realities suffered by these men. It is a book that is compelling from start to finish, and which you won't want to put down.
