Rating: Summary: This Book Went in the Trash! Review: I am really stunned by the good reviews this book has gotten here. I found it sickening, perverted, and just plain filthy. I couldn't finish it because I was so disgusted, so I skipped to the end to see if there was any redeeming quality or conclusion, and was even more let-down. Supposedly the author imagines that there is "redemption" in a character finding out about all the rape and incest in the family and his origins from it, but it was so unreal to me that it was laughable, if you could laugh while feeling so nauseated.
Rating: Summary: Fell for "Fall on your Knees"... Review: I am not one to take a moment to write reviews or recommendations on anything.... And I am not one to easily flatter or compliment, unless the statement is true in my mind.I recomend this book to all and my uncompromising reasons are this: - it is absolutely, utterly, breathtakingly, and unbelievably the best book I've ever read; - It is compelling and beautiful in every aspect. - The intricately detailed writing, the adept structure and style combined with an entralling plot makes this book an absolute masterpiece. I hate to say this, but I can not imagine it plausible that another book may exist, or will ever exist, that could match.
Rating: Summary: i liked this book Review: it was pretty good. surprising at times and all in all pretty good.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful. Review: I have read this book three times through, and every time I pick it up, I find something new hidden in the pages. The words and images MacDonald uses are the most unique and powerful I have ever read...highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: One of my all time favorite books Review: I read this book over two years ago and am still recommending it to people who are looking for a good book. I started reading prior to a business trip and spent the entire 9 hours of my flight not able to put the book down. I laughed, cried, and basically had everyone around me wanting to know what was going to happen next.
Rating: Summary: Very intricate story....a great book Review: I can see why some people might not like this book. I didn't like it so much, myself when I first started to read it. But it's a very intricate story with a little bit of everything, and lots of surprises revealed towards the end. I generally don't read books just because Oprah recommended them, but someone left this one with my by accident, then told me to keep it so I gave it a try, and I'm glad I did!
Rating: Summary: Quickly Loses Steam Review: I really wanted to like this book, and after reading almost half of it and then putting it down for a long time, I picked it back up and started all over, I wanted to like it that much. However, after the first half of the book, it really starts to go downhill. I was bored, irreverent, and frustrated that page after page, I just couldn't find any plot or character remotely interesting. This was the first book from Oprah's book list that I was largely disappointed in, and I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone, unlike most books that I read.
Rating: Summary: Oh, Oprah, what happened?!?!!? Review: I have come to know that some of Oprah's book club selection can be disturbing, but as long as the story is good and moves, disturbing is okay, but this book....I always finish a book even if I'm not that thrilled with it, because I think you need to see it to the end, but about 2/3 through the book, I decided that there was no reason to put myself through such misery. None of the characters were really likeable and the story was just one negative plot after the other. The first 1/3 of the book was good, but then, it was pretty awful from then on. Don't bother, please don't bother!!!!
Rating: Summary: Odd, beautiful Review: One of the most beautiful books out there, whatever you do, dont' miss this one. So many Oprah picks are books where there's drama and turmoil in the plot. To read a story such as this where a character goes through such difficult, almost unbearable times, is extremely inspirational. I'm reminded of other books that do this, such as Conroy's Prince of Tides or Jackson McCrae's Bark of the Dogwood. These two examples, along with Fall On Your Knees combine some humor, darkness, color, and brilliance. Yes, there are some very disturbing elements, but that's the essence of drama, and for a character to have something to "push against" it's necessary for the developement of that character--for their growth as a person. And I hated for the book to end. With most books, I'm praying for it to come to its conclusion so that I can move on to my next read, but I can't get the wonderful characters out of my head and I blame the author's brilliant writing for this. Also, I thoroughly enjoyed the dialogue between the sisters when they were little, specifically Frances, Mercedes, & Lily. Some of this is hysterical--hysterically funny! This well-crafted story is so full of twists and turns that your head will spin. If you enjoyed books such as McCrae's Bark of the Dogwood, or A Prayer for Owen Meany, you'll like this one. Also recommended: Prince of Tides, A Prayer for Owen Meany, Bark of the Dogwood
Rating: Summary: Compelling, dark, funny Review: This compelling, dark, funny book is definitely odd. But it's also one of the best reads I've come across in a long time. I'm reminded of Conroy's PRINCE OF TIDES or McCrae's BARK OF THE DOGWOOD. This novel is actually closer to the latter, for they both share some extremely dark family secrets with also some wicked humor. I had no idea that this was an Oprah pick as I don't follow her suggestions, but that may change since I've read this remarkable work of fiction. If you're one for sprawling family sagas, try this one. Also recommended: McCrae's BARK OF THE DOGWOOD
