Rating: Summary: A GREAT plot twister Review: This book kept me thinking the whole time I listened to it. Every time I thought I had figured out how the next chapter would read, Ms. Brown took a turn in the plot that I never saw. The book is one of her finest works. She makes each character very believable. The story begins in a publishing house in New York where the owner's daughter, Maris Matherly-Reed, is an editor with an eye for a great story. She gets one in a partially written manuscript. The only problem is the author is only identified by three initials and has given a return address of a small Georgia-Coast island. This story has intrigued her enough that she discusses the writing with her father, Daniel. He encourages her to seek out the author and so she goes on a search to the island seeking this unknown author. When Maris finds the author, Parker Evans, she is surprised to find him in a wheelchair. Getting him to finish writing the story takes all her skills as an editor or so she believes. Slowly, as she reads a chapter or two at a time, a story about two college roommates, each of whom wants to be the first published author starts to unfold. The more she reads, the more she begins to think this is not the fiction Parker tells her it is. As Maris travels between the island and New York, she begins to find out things about her husband that distress her. Things like his adultery and she begins to wonder to whom she is really married. Her husband, Noah Reed is co-publisher in Matherly Press but has ambitions far beyond his present position. He is ruthless enough to do anything to get it and has a past that Maris knows nothing about. Slowly the pieces begin to fall into place and Maris discovers a love she thought she already had. Right up to the very last paragraphs of the book, the reader thinks they know the ending but Ms. Brown has one more turn of events to give to the reader. ENVY is a book that not even the best sleuth will see the final ending until the final words have been listened to.
Rating: Summary: Writing 103 Review: I received this book as a gift from my writing group but my schedule is so busy I didn't have time to read it. I was intrigued by the cover so I borrowed the tapes from my local library and man, I am glad I did. It is like one of the other reviewers said it is a book within a book. But also for me a course in writing. She is actually telling us "writers" how to write a book. Mostly character delevopment but also how to plot and foreshadow. She gives some advise to authors who are writing series. How to give your readers a new look at you or how to get a new group of readers altogether. I am half way through the tapes but I am sure the ending will meet my expectations. Thank you Sandra, WELL DONE.
Rating: Summary: I simply love it!!! Review: This book really changed my view of Brown's books. I have stopped reading Brown's book since last year because i find it very superficial. It really made her writing style seem shallow. I decided to give Envy a try when i saw it on the bookshelf. i wasn't expecting much from it but Envy really surprised me. Although i haven't finish the book, i know that i will definitely enjoy it because i am enjoying it even now. This book has the depth that the other books have been sadly lacking in. And this is exactly what made me want to go on reading it. I started this book without even reading the sypnosis or any reviews because i want to be be objective about this. I didn't expect anything but i was rewarded by a terrific storyline which truly surprised me. So please do give this book a try because it's really very well written.
Rating: Summary: Great Reading. Review: This is my second Sandra Brown's book and I like very much her style. The thriler is very well plotted and the caracthers are fantastic. You must read it.
Rating: Summary: My favorite Sandra Brown book! Review: I have "Envy" both in hardcover and audio, and I enjoy it anew with each reading. As the story unfolds, the reader is able to gradually uncover the truth about all of the characters, Maris, Noah, Parker, Daniel, Mike, etc. Maris, as editor of a reputable New York publishing house, discovers an unsolicited manuscript titled "Envy" and is compelled to track down its author to a small island off the coast of Georgia. Thus we are able to follow the events surrounding the writing of "Envy" as well as the unfolding story as it is being written. I consider the characters as Ms. Brown's most intriguing ever. There are many plot twists and all of them are wonderful.
Rating: Summary: Could not put it down Review: I admit it. I love Sandra Brown's suspense novels. I love the mystery and I love the romance. This book grabbed me from the beginning and I could not put it down. But that does not mean it is a fast read. I read it slow, paging backwards trying to fit the pieces together of the book within the book. When I finally got to the end I started over and reread the book. I like the longer novels that take their time to unfold. All the main characters in ENVY were interesting. It was well worth the time it took to develop a character like Nadia and her motives. She was just too cool and calculating---one of my favorites. The other was Mike. I want a Mike, a loyal and true friend, a mentor who believes in me, and a great cook! My only caution is that romance/suspense is not for everyone. It is entertaining and provacative and sexy. It is not a case study in personality disorders so don't get too psychological.
Rating: Summary: Romance thriller features copious sex and suspense !! Review: We have to admit to never having read a Sandra Brown before, but a friend pressed this novel onto us along with a great recommendation. We weren't even sure of the genre at first: it seemed like a romance, with plenty of sex and stuff about love and relationships; but the complex plot soon led us to recognize it as a suspense thriller! The leading lady, Maris Matherly-Reed, runs with her father a respected book publishing firm that has been in the family for decades. She falls in love with an author, Noah Reed, by way of loving his book, and Reed marries into the family and the firm. His ugly ambitions (to sell the firm and make millions) and cheating ways are soon revealed to us readers. Meanwhile, using a "book within a book" technique, we meet another author through Maris, one Parker Evans, of St. Anne Island, Georgia. Parker has submitted a manuscript prologue to a book that captures Maris's imagination. She hunts for and finds the author and soon we get to read several chapters of the author's book while the ongoing story of "Envy" proceeds. Before its all over, we learn from Evan's book why he's so severely handicapped, as it turns out his story is autobiographical with himself as a protagonist and another real-life person as the villain -- wonder who? The tribulations of this whole crowd entertain all the way to a surprising and satisfying conclusion. Brown has the writing skills to hold our attention and make us care, and the plotting skills to keep us puzzled for nearly 450 pages. While some of the sex was probably a bit too explicit for us (we're a little prudish), the story is captivating and makes pages turn in an awful big hurry toward the end. We get a bit of an inside look at book publishing and some thoughts about that awful emotion envy along the way. So this is what a romantic thriller is like !
Rating: Summary: the plot thickens Review: I definitely recommend Envy! I wasn't expecting such intensity and darkness, but was pleasantly surprised by how enthralled I became with the characters! Simply said, Sandra Brown is brilliant!
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Review: This is the first Sandra Brown book I've read. I hate reviews that tell you the story of the book so I will not do that. However, I do want to sat that this really is a fantastic book. Well written, very suspenseful, pretty steamy. It will grab your interest immediately at the prologue and keep you on your toes all the way through the last page. No kidding.
Rating: Summary: One incredible story of crime and passion. Review: Maris Matherly-Reed is a renowned New York book editor, the daughter of a publisher and the wife of bestselling author Noah Reed. Maris receives a partial manuscript with the writer only identified as P.M.E. and a return address of an island off the coast of Georgia. Maris decides to search for this mystery writer. On this island Maris finds Parker Evans, a man determined to keep his past and his identity secret. Maris is riveted by his tale of two friends who charter a boat with a young lady for a night of fun...an excursion from which only one person returns. As the story continues Maris is convinced that the story might not be fiction. Disturbed by her growing attraction to Parker and gripped by his novel's characters and plot, Maris decides to find out the truth about a crime committed years ago. Then someone close to her dies and even closer looms evil - a man who uses anything and anyone to get what he wants. I read this book on the request of a friend who had enjoyed it. I enjoyed it so much I had my mother read it. This book is one of Sandra's best by far. It has intrigue, passion, mystery, crime, and two entertwining plots. What more could you want? Read It and I Guarantee You'll Enjoy Every Minute!
