Summary: WOW!!!!!!Well - done!
Review: Interestingly, I met Rose Connors at a mystery author booksigning at a little bookstore in Brewster, MA. She was there with Philip Craig whose work I have read and enjoyed. He strongly suggested Ms. Connors work so I picked it up and looked it over. On the cover is a brief review by Perri O'Shuaghnessy whose latest book was my beach read at the time! I happen to love mystery stories. Well, let me tell you, this book is GREAT! It is so well written, the characters come to life. the story is fast paced - a real page turner!! I was actually reading the book while the RED SOX game was on and I am a huge Red Sox fan!! I just could not put this book down! I cannot wait to read Ms. Connors latest work.

Summary: absolutely fantastic legal thriller
Review: The assistant district attorney for Barnstable County on Cape Cod believes heart and soul that Manuel Rodriguez is guilty of murdering Michael Scott, a bright college student with his whole future ahead of him. She is so convincing that a jury eventually finds Manuel guilty of murder in the first degree.

One year after Michael's death on Memorial Day, a second person is murdered, a nineteen-Navy man home on leave. A roman numeral II is carved on his chest just as the number I was carved on Michael's chest. Assistant DA Marty Nickerson thinks the same killer murdered both men, but her superiors dismiss her concerns until a third person is murdered and the Roman numeral III is carved on his client. Marty knows she must do something to trap the serial killer before anyone else gets killed.

ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY is an absolutely fantastic legal thriller. Readers get an up close and personal look at the judicial system as seen through the eyes of the protagonist, a woman who goes from being an idealistic to a cynic over the course of the novel. The perpetrator is hiding in plain sight but readers won't be able to recognize the essence of evil hiding behind a well-liked and respected person. Rose Connors is clearly a gifted storyteller.

Summary: I can't believe this is the writer's first novel!
Review: The first unusual thing about this novel is that it follows the story of the prosecuting attorney, instead of the usual point of view of the defence lawyer trying to get their clients off. Our accomplished prosecutor is completely devoted to the criminal justice system until she starts to unwillingly question it. She is such a vividly-drawn character, vulnerable but brave, full of integrity but also passion. I mostly enjoyed that there is nothing unnecessary is this book - every detail is vital to the story and emotions are subtle but strong. Particularly, I liked the portrayal of the heroine's interaction with the defence attorney - so discreet but yet so heart-warming. It is an unpredictable story, at times giving the impression that the author had no clear plan in mind, and made it up as she went along, but in a good way! The book provides first-hand knowledge of the workings of the criminal procedures and rules of evidence and their shortcomings. The setting is clearly one the author is familiar with and is therefore extremely realistic. The author clearly knows her subject, and can also write so well! I am looking forward to the next book featuring Marty!

Summary: Don't Waste Your Time
Review: There are lots of great legal mysteries and thrillers, but this isn't one of them. The characters (especially Marty and Geraldine) are one-dimensional stereotypes, and their situations are trite and boring (for example, Marty's trouble with her ex-husband over their kid is not exactly an original subplot). The prose is dull and unimaginative, and I had to force myself to finish this book. At the end, I felt cheated because certain things had not been sufficiently emphasized to give the reader a fair chance to guess the ending. There are a few insights into the legal system, but others (notably Grisham) do it way better. The setting will be a draw for some readers, but there are many other more interesting and creative novels with the Cape Cod locale. Final verdict: don't waste your time with this book.
