Summary: Renewed faith in Grisham
Review: I had given up on John Grisham, refusing to buy his last two legal thrillers. I was so disappointed that he had fallen into formula writing. When I read that A Painted House didn't have any lawyers, living or dead, I decided to give it a chance. I'm so glad I did! It was great. As a former English teacher I kept thinking I could use this to teach my students about narrators, setting, word choice, characterization, and use a book that they would love. What a great find. I can only hope that John Grisham will stay away from lawyers for a while. He has too much talent to keep telling the same story over and over again.

Summary: A Painted House
Review: I have always loved Johns Grisham's books. So I ran out and purchased this one. I WANT my MONEY back. What a disappointment. He tries to COPY the MacCorte book from Irland. However, this kid has two parents(very good prople). He has two grandparents(very good people). And NOTHING is funny. Maybe it is because I know a seven year does think or act like this seven year old. What a DUMB story.

Summary: a painted house
Review: I was thoroughly disappointed by this latest novel, A Painted House, by John Grisham. I found the prose boring, along with the story line and plot, what there was of one. This was definitely not in the style to which I and others have become accustomed. Do not waste your money. If you do feel obliged to spend some, please donate instead to your favorite charity.

Summary: A tease?
Review: Hmmmmmm ... great read ... yet, I had so many unanswered questions at the end! What happened to the uncle, the grandparents, the hill people?? Is there to be a "next" book??

Summary: A Painted House
Review: A snoring disappointment. This book belongs in the childrens section. John Grisham has been a favorite author of mine forever but this story left me wanting my money back. Every time I thought it was going to get the least bit exciting it simply didn't. Definately not his best work or even par for the course for John.

Summary: An Unexpectantly Excellent Read!!!!
Review: My mother and I exchange books frequently. Usually they consist of thrillers and mysteries by Patterson, Grisham, Chrichton, and Koontz. When she handed me the new John Grisham book, 'A Painted House', I was excited to have a new book by one of my favorites. Ten pages into the book, I was convinced that this was not the Grisham I had come to know through books like 'The Firm' and 'A Time to Kill'. I called my mother and she told me to "give it a chance." So, I did. Reading this book has proved to me that people can be things that you don't expect them to be. I know Mr. Grisham to be an excellent writer of thrillers, but who would have thought that he could bring us this pastoral story of a farm through the most honest eyes of a seven-year old boy? If you miss this book, don't worry, one day your children will be forced to read it by their English teacher.

Summary: Grisham keeps getting worse!
Review: Until John Grisham returns to his roots (The Firm), I expect his career to dwindle. This is easily the worst of his books.

Summary: a great change
Review: I didn't think I would like a book written by John Grisham that wasn't about attorneys and suspense. Was I ever wrong!! I wanted to read fast so I would know what was next; I real slow so it would last longer!! It was great!!

Summary: Surprisingly Good
Review: I have to confess that I have enjoyed nearly all of Grisham's novels. Some more than others. I realize he may never be considered a great writer along the lines of a Steinbeck, Fitzgerald, Hemingway or Faulkner, but A Painted House may help change his image. In many ways the book reminded me of Huck Finn or To Kill a Mockingbird. In some ways it reminded me of J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye because of the way the protaganist, 7-year-old Luke Chandler, was forced to grow up in a hurry while facing impossible conflicts. In spite of that, this book had me laughing at the most amazing things. I highly recommend this great read. And I suspect this will be another of Grisham's books that I'll read time and again.
