Rating: Summary: farmer story Review: This is the 1st Grisham, which is hard to read. Compared to his earlier books it is about a totaly diffrent topic (90% of the book is about farming). I would not buy this one!
Rating: Summary: Precocious 7-yr old Review: If you like violence, out-of-wedlock babies, floods, drought, and "minority" characters, then this is the book for you. If you know of 7-yr olds who have the maturity of a 15-yr. old, then this is the book for you.
Rating: Summary: Im going to become a writer Review: If this kind of garbage can get published and sell millions, Im going to write a meaningless story and cash in. This is the worst book I have ever read. There is no point to any of what is written. There is no suspense, no plot twists, and nothing interesting at all about the characters. This is further proof that these literary reviewers have something at stake and have incentive to give a positive review. I cannot believe the positive reviews on this book! Is this supposed to be written for five and under? There is an entire chapter written about a tornado and I just started laughing out loud. There was no point whatsoever! "The tornado picked itself up, jumped across the road..." blah, blah, blah.. end of chapter! No point! Every scene in this book is boring and pointless. John Grisham is one of the worst writers of the 90's. His first few books were somewhat interesting but this pathetic excuse for a novel is a way for him to cash in. I could write a better book than this. Anyone could.
Rating: Summary: A Beautiful Portriat of the Rural South Review: I've noticed losts of negative reviews listed here, so I thought I'd add my 2 cents worth... don't read this book if you are just a John Grisham fan looking for another legal thriller, you'll be disapointed... but on the otherhand if you have the slightest appreciation for Southern, or Rural culture, READ THIS. I Loved this book!!! This was a deeply engrossing book and I fell in love with this family. I laughed when they did, cried when they did, and before I'd even put the book down after completing it, I was already starting to miss them.
Rating: Summary: 300 pages into this and nothing interesting yet Review: I have a couple hundred pages to go here and nothing interesting has happened. Ok, someone got killed but you know who did it and even if you didnt, you would care either way because the guy getting killed is some beatnik that wasnt even a part of the story. This is so ho-hum and mediocre I cant believe it. It reads like it was meant for ages 5 and under. Farm life must be pretty boring right? Well, heres a story about everyday farm life and nothing more. The result? Boring. The characters are uninteresting and the writing style has no coloration whatsoever. Bland, bland, bland. If something happens during the remaining pages, assuming I get that far, I will eat my words and update this. This is the last Grisham book I'll ever read. I quit reading his works about 4 books ago as I finally realized, the guy just cant write.
Rating: Summary: A Painted House Review: Very slow and hard to get into..Basically totally BORING, don't waste your $$
Rating: Summary: Needs More Than Paint Review: A remarkably mediocre novel that I labored through waiting for something to happen. It never did.
Rating: Summary: A Delight Review: I loved this book. I am not a fan of his court room drama so what a relief it was to find that John Grisham has more depth. The characters are well developed and original yet comfortable. You believe in them. Great plot!He pulled me into an era of quite desperation and simple joys. To me the mark of a great book is to think about the people in it long after the last page. A Painted House hits the spot if you want a great read.
Rating: Summary: Pointless Review: Wow! That was a boring book full of stories that had no point at all. I felt like he just sort of stopped writing once he reached 300 or 400 (whatever it is) pages. So far 3 other family members have read it and came to the same conclusion. Not worth the time, even if you get a copy for free.
Rating: Summary: A Painted House By: John Grisham December 1, 2002 Review: This book was giving to me by a fellow co-worker to pass the sometimes boring work night. This is the first book I have read by John Grisham, and will certainly not be the last. Grisham does an excellent job making the reader fell like he is part of the story. A poor cotton farming family trying there best to keep there heads above water. The story is told through the eyes of the youngest member of the Chandler family Luke. It tells the story of how cotton growing was during depression in Arkansas. Young Luke meets a lot of new people, and experiences a lot of trying situations that makes a young boy grow up quick. Luke spends most of his time daydreaming about one day playing pro ball for the St. Louis Cardinals, and thinking about his first crush Tally, who was a part of the family hired to help pick cotton. Along the way, Luke runs into a lot of secretes that a child must keep to himself. He must also solve the mystery of who is painting his family's old farm house. I would recommend this book to anybody. Grisham knows how to keep the readers attention with his excellent story telling. This is a book that once you get started you have a hard time putting it down. You can not wait to read the next chapter to find out what will happen next, and when you finish the book it will make you wonder what happened in this family's future.
