Review: This book reshaped my understanding of the sacrifice that the generation of WW II made to preserve our liberty. John Bradley tells a stirring story of the six Marines that were captured in the famous flag raising photograph on Iwo Jima. A must read for anyone under the age of 70.

Review: As a combat marine of the VietNam era, I can understand how John Bradley's father felt about his secrets of war. Now when I see a photo of the flag raising, I feel as if I know each of these Marines personally. Thanks for a great book about great men.

Summary: Well written history with integrity.
Review: There are so many history books covering WWII that it now takes something exceptional for a new book to be able to justify its place on the shelf. This is one such book. It contains pretty much all you could ask for. It is both well focussed and detailed and portrays a very accurate picture of the conditions. It is also exceptionally well written, giving a very personal insight into both the author and his father without falling into the trap of sentimentality.

Summary: A Perfect Father's Day Gift
Review: My sons know I have a great interest in military history, particularly World War II. This past June 18th they gave me this book. I can't imagine a more moving gift. As years pass and more veterans leave us, we lose a part of history. James Bradley in his book, has captured a rare mix of military history and personal perspective that is unique. The human side of all of the particpants in this story engulfs and embraces the reader. My sons are 17 and 19 years old, the same age as many of the young Marines and Corpsmen. Maybe that's another reason why this book struck such a chord in my heart. I think this book should win the Pulitzer Prize.

Review: Even after reading this book it is impossible to imagine what these young boys experienced. I am not normally an emotional reader, but this book brought me to tears on a number of occasions. I recommend it as a must read.

Review: Historian Stephen Ambrose wrote of "Flags of Our Fathers" that it was "the best battle book I ever read." It's that and much more. As someone who has read an average of more than a book a week for over 30 years, this is the only book I can remember finishing with tears in my eyes. It beautifully explains who were the men of "our greatest generation" and why they were heroes. All those who live in freedom owe them an unrepayable debt of gratitude. Bradley explains why without being sentimental or maudlin. Don't miss this labor of love.
