Summary: "War is hell!"
Review: "War is hell!"

Stephen E. Ambrose's "Band of Brothers" proves that the above saying is no mere cliche.

Having been born in Amsterdam in 1950, I grew up hearing firsthand stories of the hellish war from the perspective of an occupied people. I married the daughter of an American G.I. who served in the Pacific during WWII, but it hasn't been until my son began asking him questions a few years ago that we began to hear about his experiences.

Ambrose vividly tells the story of Easy Company, from their rigid training in 1942 to their drop on D-Day and their brutal marches and battles to help liberate France, Belgium, and Holland before crossing the Rhine and heading for Hitler's "Eagle's Nest."

This book is not for the faint of heart. The following quote gives you a brief idea of what I'm talking about. "The soldier's concern is with death, not life, with destruction, not construction. The ultimate destruction is killing another human being." Here Ambrose pauses on page 310 to summarize what he spells out in graphic detail on the pages preceding and following.

Why was this book written? Ambrose quotes Captain Richard "Dick" Winters who wrote, "...we wondered if the people would ever know what it cost the soldiers in terror, bloodshed, and hideous, agonizing deaths to win the war (page 316)." War IS hell, and these guys went through it.

I thank Dr. Ambrose for writing this book, and especially for telling the readers what these men did with their lives after the war. Many of us know men (and women) from this generation who haven't talked about what they went through. This book will at least give you a taste of what it was like.

I recently talked to a Vietnam War veteran who said that war veterans are often the last ones who want to go to war. If you read this, you'll understand why.

Summary: Absolutely wonderful account
Review: I received the DVD box set of Band of Brothers for Christmas, and once I put it in my player, I couldn't stop watching it. It didn't end there. The same day I finished all 6 CDs, I ran out and bought the book. I finished the book in less than 2 days, and now I am searching the internet for additional material. The story that Ambrose writes is just that inspiring. Ambrose is such an easy writer to read. It flows smoothly and you are gripping the pages as the battle ensues, and wiping tears as some of their comrades perish. We lost one great author and historian when Ambrose died.

Summary: Another gem from the late Stephen Ambrose
Review: I was deeply saddened when I learned of Stephen Ambrose's death, mostly because I had come to respect his work so much- and because he was the foremost WWII historian out there... producing books that were both engaging and accurate. I saw the miniseries "Band of Brothers" before I read the book and couldn't stop watching it when I did! The book is just as readable as the film is watchable and it becomes much easier to follow the characters when you read the book. Great one by Ambrose. Its got the drama and action of "D-Day" on a more personal scale. Ambrose will be missed.

Summary: Can't put this down for love or money.
Review: Make sure the dogs are fed and the kids are occupied because once you start down the road with the brave men of Easy company you will not put down this book for love or money. It is by turns heart felt, exciting, and harrowing. We can never realy know what it was like for those chosen souls to face what they did during the war but after reading "Band of Brothers" at least I know of the great debt we owe these men and their families. Thanks Guys!

Summary: MJ's Magnificent Review
Review: This book is about E COMPANY,506th Regiment,101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest. It takes place in World War 2 in Germany. They are sent to fight in the war and liberate the Nazi Death Camps but they are ambushed by a surprise attack by the Nazis. I thought that this book was exciting and I would recommend this book to anyone who can stand war and casualties but, I wouldn't recommend it to anybody who can't stand gory stituations.

Summary: E Company
Review: Band of Brothers is a true story about a bunch of paratroopers in E Company, 506th Regiment, and 101st Airborne. They go from the D-Day to Hitler's Eagle Nest.
I would recommend this book to people, like myself, who like WWII. I read this book, because I liked the movie, I've seen lots of war movies and books, but this book stuck out. It stood out because of the way they banded together to fight and there friendships. They were willing to sacrifice themselves for each other. They had a lot of confidence in their comrades. This company went through a lot of difficult tasks that I wouldn't want to do. Band of Brothers almost tells these men's stories from the beginning of the war all the way to what their jobs were and when some of them died. The book gave more details than the movie, so I would recommend people to read the book and watch the movie.

Summary: A psychological and historical account of the 506th Regiment
Review: What Stephen Ambrose does so well in his historical accounts, is bring a story to life. There is no point in his stories where the reader feels like he/she is just glazing over historical facts. Ambrose presents history in the way it should be presented. The reader feels like he/she is along with the soldiers in Normandy, Bastogne, Germany and everywhere in between, but Ambrose also gives historical background so the reader perfectly understands the war and all its happenings. One of the ways Ambrose brings the story to life is that he tells through sources and soldier accounts, what was actually going through the soldiers head when he was staring down the barrel of a german luger or heaving a grenade. The story begins with training and ends with the looting of Hitler's Eagles Nest but then Ambrose goes one step further. At the very end of the book, he takes a few pages to recount what has happened to the soldiers of the 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne in the past half century. Even if you are not a World War II buff, this is a great book to enjoy.

Summary: The book that made me see real heros
Review: Having read many books about the battles and wars throughout the history of the world I find that Band of Brothers gives a remarkable insight into the bonds of the frontline combat soldier. Ambrose is truly a national treasure. This book caused a great stirring of emotion in me from lauphing out loud to breaking down into tears. It also showed me a great story about true heros, like major Dick Winters when he and members of easy took a battery of 88s in Normandy.I have enjoyed this book many times and hope to do so many times more.

Summary: Give a copy to a high school student!
Review: If you enjoyed the HBO miniseries, you need to purchase and read the book BAND OF BROTHERS. It is my personal favorite of Stephen Ambrose's works -- more personal and intimate than D-DAY: THE SIXTH OF JUNE and more physical, energetic, and gripping than CITIZEN SOLDIERS.

Two things make this book unique in war literature: 1) the emphasis on pre-combat training and the development of a unit's esprit de corps; and, 2) the attention paid to the postwar lives of the men who served.

As always, Ambrose's machine gun prose seizes your imagination with perfect historical details. Another historian might tell you that training was tough, only Ambrose knows that American paratroopers were more fit than the professional football players and prize fighters of their day (and that the athletes often served as physical training instructors for the troopers!). Another historian might tell you that the company commander survived the war and led a prosperous, peaceful life; only Ambrose lets you know that the same man raises geese but would never think of slaughtering them for food.

Stephen Ambrose made a unique contribution to the profession of history and to the United States of America because he was able, more than any other researcher, to elicit from the heroes of World War II the complete and candid accounts of their actions.

If you already have read BAND OF BROTHERS, I suggest than you turn next to Ambrose's PEGASUS BRIDGE, which recounts the daring and critical glider raid by British commandos the night before D-Day.

Another, little known book that any reader of BAND OF BROTHERS will treasure is WITH THE OLD BREED: ON PELELIU AND OKINAWA by Eugene Sledge. Sledge served with the Marines in the Pacific and endured some of the worst combat in the history of the world. He survived to write a compelling and unforgettable memoir.
