Rating: Summary: I HAVE READ THIS BOOK AT LEAST 20 TIMES! Review: This is simply the best WWII book I have ever read! I have given this book as a gift to a few friends, and they have nothing but praise. Having been in the Army for 12 years now, and as a Desert Storm Veteran, I can say this book captures the feelings and emotions shared by regular people thrown together in bad situations, and the bonding that goes on. I have nothing but the utmost respect for the men in the book, and all of the veterans who put it all on the line for our country. I have read 2 other Steven Ambrose books, and would not hesitate to recommend any of them. The first time I read "Band of Brothers", I went cover to cover in about 6 hours!
Rating: Summary: Very good! Review: It is amazing to me the amount of detail that has been captured in this book so many years after the end of WWII. The amount of research needed is unfathomable to me. All the tiny tid-bits of information about every person written about kept me turning the pages. This is an excellent depiction of how Military History should be written.
Rating: Summary: very real Review: My father was with the 101st Airborne from the Normandy jump to Bastogne. Many times I tried to elicit information from him but he was always aloof about the war. Mr.Ambrose seems to capture and highlight the realities of this special division. Now, with Saving Private Ryan and this book, I understand what went on and what these brave souls had to endure. People tend to forget and try to put the past aside but God Bless writers like Mr.Ambrose and other like Spielberg to remind us and take a moment to say thank you, Old Timers.
Rating: Summary: Amazing, moving, remarkable. Review: I had the rare opportunity to meet the real MAJ Winters and even share a dinner table with him. Based on this experience I can share with you all that Mr. Ambrose has done a remarkable job of capturing the essense of this warrior in text. This book was one of those rare "can't put downs" that you only happen upon a few times. I strongly recommend this book to both WWII buffs and those who are just starting to learn about the war. You will doubtlessly gain insight into the suffering, trials, and triumphs of those great men who did battle for all of us fifty years ago.
Rating: Summary: Captivating, thrilling, a must read Review: The story of the 101st Airborne Division, 506th PIR, E-company unfolds before you begining at training leading all the way up to post-war careers. This is one of the most interesting books I have ever read, because of the personal attention. As you read you can picture yourself in a cold foxhole while air bursts explode around you in the infamous Ardennes Forest.
Rating: Summary: History Comes Alive in this Book Review: What a wonderful book! Easy to read, filled with facts and minutia yet never dull. My grandfather landed on the Normandy beaches - not with the paratroopers but "regular" army - and this book helps me to understand, if only a little bit, what his war must have been like. Ambrose has a gift - enjoy it!
Rating: Summary: Ordinary men caught up in extraordinary events...... Review: As an ex-Marine I was reminded of Admiral Nimitz's words regarding Iwo Jima, "Uncommon Valor Was a Common Virtue".The men of "E" Company were ordinary "Joes" in the sense that they all represent "us", but they were of a different breed. Men who understood the challenges before them and wanted to be the best there could be to face them. Mr. Ambrose has provided us all with a wonderful piece of our history and our "civilian" fighting men. Enough words cannot possibly be said about that generation and the hardships, suffering, loss and death they endured for us. It's one of the best WWII histories in recent memory.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! I felt like I was a part of Easy Company Review: I loved reading this book from cover to cover. I was never disappointed. This was the first Ambrose I have read, and I like the way he tells the history of the time from the perspective of the men who were actually fighting. I have always been more intersted in the human stories of wartime than the strategy and planning that goes into the great campaigns. I was sorry that the book had to end, even though it meant the war was over and our brave men were victorious. I felt as though I could feel the brotherhood that had bonded the men together. I wish that the story of every unit could be told for us all to appreciate what these men went through, some of them for 4 years. Keep up the great work Mr. Ambrose!
Rating: Summary: God bless America and the men of the 101st Review: I was cold during the bulge and in tears during the liberation. Stephen Ambrose could not have done a better job in describing the war to those of us who were not there. For all history buffs and those who have forgotton.
Rating: Summary: a great book full of what veterans did for this country Review: a wonderful book of what men of the greatest era went through for this country. i have a short attention span for book i read a little bit of it and put it down and never finish it. i finished this book in less than a week i couldn't put it down it fascinated me. it's like a story but its true so you get the most detailed and accurate picture of what happened you possibly can without being their. its a great book for anyone who wants drama and non-fiction in a package it feels like you are their watching them from normandy to berlin. the book even tells what happens to each of them in the end. don't take my word for it buy it you be glad you did.
