Johnson author of "What Do You Do When the Medications Don't Work?--A Non-Drug Treatment of Dizziness, Migraine Headaches, Fibromyalgia, and Other Chronic Conditions".
Rating: Summary: Incredible book, read it if you get the chance Review: Stephen Ambrose is the most compelling historian ever and this book is proof. Because of this book I have read more into the 101st Airborne and actually more into WWII. The book is magnificent from cover to cover, from page to page. If you can buy this or even borrow it, do it. It will be a great book for decades to come.
Rating: Summary: Just When You Believe Things Can't Get Worse Review: This unfortunate Capt. Herbert Sobel, the original commander of Easy Company, was a strict martinet in the early days of their training, when all the guys were green. He whipped them into shape and instilled discipline, creating an efficient unit that went forward into parachute training then combat. (Sobel had been so harsh with the men, they were in better physical condition than the instructors at jump school.) As training developed, Sobel stressed night operations to the point some of the men joked they could function better in the dark than in daylight. It's too bad the battalion leadership didn't become aware that Sobel was a problem until after his noncommissioned officers nearly mutinied. Sobel turned out to be incompetent at field problems, in addition to continuing his chicken ways (which are appropriate for initial training, but not for further development). If someone had recognized that Sobel was superb at molding totally untrained men into soldiers, and would have best served the Army solely in that capacity, the man could have been utilized throughout the war for basic paratroop training. As it was, he went forward with Easy Company and his incompetence propagated relegation to humiliating supply-officer duties. And just when you think this guy's life couldn't have gotten any more pitiful (having to salute, for instance, superior officers who had once been subordinate in rank to him), you reach the "Where They Are Now" chapter -- and you really feel sorry for this fellow. It was appropriate that Ambrose recognized Sobel's contribution to the excellence of Easy Company, but (good grief!) the sad man's ultimate outcome in life was just pitiful. If Sobel's career had been confined to basic training, he would have been considered a great soldier by everyone whom he trained. As it was, he was terrific to a point, and then everything disintegrated. An extremely interesting, gripping story -- Enjoy.
Rating: Summary: The HBO Mini Series is Better Review: Don't misunderstand: the book is great. But what Hanks and Speilberg did is magnificent. They did more thorough research, they created real-life characters and they bring you into the lives of Easy Company yourself. Great book, worth reading, but the movie is much, much better.
Rating: Summary: Riveting - just add some maps Review: An amazing read, much better than the series, if you can believe it. Some maps of Normandy, Market garder, & the Bulge would have been a huge help. Otherwise, I found this to be a fantastic book.
Rating: Summary: informative, riveting, good story... Review: This book provides some great insight into the events surrounding the D-Day invasion, the Battle of the Bulge, and the fall of Germany, all from the perspective of the 101st Airborne. I learned a lot about the events and the people, mostly things you don't learn in history classes. The lengthy personal interviews of those involved brought new light to the infantry/paratrooper's plight during WWII.
Rating: Summary: Band 'O' Brothers (Yeah Baby) Review: So for those kids who would like to get this book but their parents say no for some reason well this review will tell you all the things about this book that you should know about. First I thought this was one of the best books I have ever read. Band of Brothers has a tough vocabulary so I recommend that people under 11 should choose another book. The content in this book is also a bit rough for youngsters and some gory and graphic parts are just not good for young people. Besides the negatitives there are some positives. Band of Brothers tells you all about what happened in the WW2. If I were the parent our person trying to decide whether or not to allow yourself or your son or daughter to get this book I would have to say yes but before they start to read have them explain why they want the book so bad. Is it because they just want to read about the blood and guts or is it because they want to learn more about what happened in WW2, Eroupe, France etc.. And the last thing I have to say is that Stephen E. Ambrose is a great author, his book was outstanding and tought me what WW2 was really like. I hope this review was helpful to you and your children (maybe). Was this review helpful to you?
Rating: Summary: One of the better books I have read over the last 5 yrs..... Review: I first learned of E Company from the most common source....HBO's Band of Bros mini-series. I fell in love w/ their story and recently bought the book for a relative. My wife's grandfather fought in the battle of the bulge and is still happy to discuss it w/ family. The book is well done and you really see what the (often overused term) hero is all about. A great read......it is amazing what these boys (turned to men) did at such a young age....
Rating: Summary: Excellent book - highly recommended Review: The book Band of Brothers, was the best written book I have ever read. Stephen Ambrose was an excellent writer and nobody could have ever written the story of Easy Company during WW2 in a better way. In apart from HBO's movie series, I found that the book was amazingly more in depth than the movie series. Before you read this book, I suggest you watch the movie series; only if you haven't already of course. This way, you know the characters and can anticipate parts with action and drama - only in 100x more in depth. This book has made me even more appreciative of not just the veterans of Easy but all of the veterans who gave their life fighting for good in all of the wars. One of the most impressive parts of the book was the extent of character development in the first couple of chapters. You get to know the characters like their you're best friend. You get to learn what the characters like and dislike, you get to learn about their families and occupations before/after the war (occupations after the war I thought was very interesting and enjoyable to read). This book in my opinion is a great work of literature and I would very much enjoy reading it again in the future.
Rating: Summary: Teddy O-T Miller Place , NY Review: The book that I read for this quarter was entitled Band of Brothers it was written by Stephen E. Ambrose. It was quite possibly the best World War Two book that I have every read. The HBO movie was also very well made and acted but I would recommend reading it as well, to get the behind the scenes information and detail that was not in the movie. It was about the basic training and the heroic battles of the paratroopers from the 101st airborne division. It mainly had to do with the first group of people that went through basic training together. They went through basic training at Toccoa, and had battles in Normandy, Bastogne, and many others throughout the entire European Campaign. Almost every member of the group in the beginning of the book recieved over two medals for various different reasons such as, the purple heart, the bronze star, the silver star, and they all got there wings for completing the paratroopers basic training. I enjoyed this book very much because it was quick to read and it taught me a lot about the ranks of military men and what each rank does for a job. Once you pick this book up it will be very hard to put down. I am going to start reading some of Stephen Ambrose's other books shortly because I enjoyed the style of writing and the way he describes all of the battles. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about war stories and battles.
