Rating: Summary: Powerfully written! Review: Once again, Stephen Ambrose has gone to great lengths to bring a piece of history to his readers. In "Band of Brothers", Ambrose carefully re-constructs the war from the viewpoint of the soldiers who were there, to include their horrors, fears, and thrills. By searching for, and locating, survivors from this unit and getting their personal accounts of the events, Mr. Ambrose has come through with a work that literally puts you in the middle of the action. I tip my hat to Mr. Ambrose, his work, and the honor that he gives the men who served. I tip this not only as an author, but also as one who served many years in the uniform.
Rating: Summary: The Finest Outfit of The War Review: Stephen E. Ambrose gives a chilling and realistic account of serving in Americas finest war. The truth that is spoken through Ambrose's research and many interviews with the actual men of the 506th is incomparable to anything I have ever read before. This book is the most accurate book about World War II on bookshelves today. Telling the tale of the 506th journey through training, Normandy, and the final capture of Hitler's Eagle's Nest. This book would appeal to the true WWII enthusiast, it features exerts from interviews with the men as well as the actual storyline. However, this does make the book a little choppy and confusing at times. Along with the interviews, Ambrose does a tremendous job of explaining the characters and situations. You really feel as though you on the front lines or in the fox hole with the men. Through this realism, you begin to feel patriotic and as though you owe a great deal of thanks and respect for the men who paid such a price for our freedom. This is a tremendous book written by a renowned historical author. You will be captivated by the words from the words of the mouths of the men who were there. You will be exposed to a generation of people and a time that will entice you to learn more. Most importantly though, you will gain a whole new perspective about the last great war. The personal sacrifices by so many, the tales of heroism from those who came home, and the heart wrenching tales of the liberation of the German concentration camps. A must read for those of you seeking a fantastic journey through American history.
Rating: Summary: Unbelievable, if it weren't true. Review: Many readers were introduced to Stephen Ambrose's characteristic style of writing in books such as CITIZEN SOLDIERS or D-DAY, a style that weds together riveting, factual battlefield history with the personal and compelling accounts of those that lived and fought through it. That style comes out again in BAND OF BROTHERS. But readers are allowed to become better acquainted with this book's subjects because Ambrose places the entire focus of the book on the men from one particular company (E or Easy company), from one particular regiment (506th), from one particular division (101st Airborne). Readers become interested and involved in the lives of the men from Easy Co. They root for them in battle. They cheer for them in victory, and they mourn with them in defeat ot retreat. Every unit history should be this detailed, moving, and vivid.
Rating: Summary: An exceptional chronicle of war! Review: This book gives the reader an upclose, detailed, and absorbing examination of World War II. Ambrose tells the story in prose that is well informed by the best scholarship in military and political history. At the same time, his writing is direct and accessible to all. The reader gets to know the varied and valiant men of Easy Company, from their rigorous training before D-Day to the end of the war. Indeed, Ambrose fills us in on how they spent their lives up to 1991 or so. A fine achievement--to be recommended even to those who do not typically like war stories.
Rating: Summary: awesome!! Review: I read the book, while I was watching the miniseries. It was cool that what I was reading ended up on screen. It was a great book. And seeing it on screen made it better because you get the visuals.
Rating: Summary: An inspiring story.... Review: This book follows the typical first-hand history accounting of most Stephen Ambrose books. Band of Brothers will not disappoint fans of this genre, or of students of World War II history. I purchased and read this book after seeing the miniseries on HBO, and found that the film was a very good adaptation of the book. However, the book does offer many details that were not present in the film. The story of Easy Company is truly inspiring. It is amazing to read about people being changed from ordinary citizens into elite warriors. Of further amazement are the many hardships that these men suffered during the war. Regardless, the final result of their lifetime friendships and devotion to one another reveals the true character of the human spirit. Pick up a copy of this book. You will enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: heck of a book Review: This book just like my title suggest here is one heck of a book. If you are interested in how our guys fought in WW2 this is it. Naturally the book concentrates at the company level but it offers insights really how the entire division was really special. Initially you I worried that since they are so many guys mention you won't keep track but Ambrose does a good job not to get you too lost. The hero are many in this book but the story of Major Winters is incredible. A real American hero. If you are someone that enjoy reading about world war 2 this is the book I recommend to get your hands on.
Rating: Summary: reads well Review: It reads well with very concise battlefield actsion sequences. This group of men truly went through many interesting battles. It is a very personal book which discounts the glory of war and shows it at a very micro level.
Rating: Summary: Great book Review: If you like military battle play-by-plays then this is the book for you. The first thing that I though about when I read this was that it would make a great mini-series. We follow a 'band of brothers' through 3 or 4 of the most heroic battles of WWII. You really get a sense that these guys were fighting in order to help keep their fellow troopers alive not just for themselves. They were fighting not for glory but in order to get a job done.
Rating: Summary: Guess what??? Review: This book made the hairs on the back of my neck tingle. Nothing that I have had to endure comes close to what the boys of the 101st went through. There were parts in the book where I felt as if I was sitting in the foxhole right next to one of the paratroopers. It focused on just one company to write about and I thought that that was great. It really gave me a picture of how WWII was seen in Europe by GI's. This book is well researched with primary sources and well written using thoughtful quotations from those sources. This is excellent reading for young officers, cadets and those interested in military history for any reason. Great book, I would recommend it to any one who really wants to know what combat is all about Big Truck
