Summary: You must read the other books
Review: If you have not read the reast of his books this is not the best book he has written. Alot of the storylines that this book has in it ties in with the other six books. All the major characters in this book have a more deep story to them in the other books. This is the seventh book in the series. That means that if you have not read the others you will knot know what is going on in this one. it would be like trying to start reading a thousand page book from the seven hundredth page and trying to figure out what is going on. All of the story lines that have been running through the other books all come together in this one. Yes his characters have strong personalities but you learn why in the other books. If you have read the others this book is a five, if you have not then it is a three or four. You don't get all out of this book by starting with this book. Start at the beging of the story and this will be a great book.

Summary: Big Book - Good Pillow
Review: This novel reached a point when it seemed to embody Tom Clancy's vision for how a government should be organised in a perfect world, he just had to find a way of wiping out the existing government to do it! It's still an entertaining story, but I think I laughed more than the author was intending. Although I loved Clancy's earlier books, he's pushing the boundaries of credibility, and in this genre they tend to stretch pretty far anyway. On the plus side, I did discover that this book made a surprisingly comfortable pillow when reading on the beach. One for the big Clancy fans only I think.

Summary: More war would have been nice
Review: I think Tom Clancy has some narrow vision of an ideal person/hero with a helluva lot of integrity and other conservative traits. From this ideal all of his characters seem to be sort of stoic and boring. While his villans are polar opposites and easy to hate.

What I did enjoy about this novel was the easy to digest information on the American Political Systems, the Armoured Cavlary aswell as the CIA among many other topics. Even though all of his character development seemed to go along the same line you can find yourself enjoying the many sub plots and fascinating storyline. This was my second Tom Clany novel and for the most part it was enjoyable.

The biggest negative of this book was the ending I hope I dont give it away by saying there was roughly 800 pages of build up to a less than fascinating war where America showed itself to be the best goddamn thing in the world.

Summary: Executive Orders too fragmented
Review: I've been a long time fan of Tom Clancy although Executive Orders was one of the first Clancy books that I've read recently. I was disappointed with this book partially due to its overall length. It seemed that the first 500 pages could easily have been dropped. I literally skimmed 100-150 pages just to get through it. I didn't feel that I was developing a relationship with any character in the book. Sure, President Jack Ryan was the main guy, but he was still way too distant to really feel that you cared that much for him. Only in the last 200 pages did the pace and action pick-up. Save your time for something else.

Summary: Excellent-One of Clancy's Best
Review: Jack Ryan becomes President of the United States in this Clancy novel, and must face the daunting tasks of restoring the nation's government, managing a health crisis, and win a war. I thought this book was excellent, even on a level with The Cardinal of the Kremlin. Although long, this book has many very interesting stories that all come together for a very nice ending. Worth reading if you are a fan of Clancy, or if you are not, read it anyway.

Summary: Provocative
Review: The Cold war may be over but the combination of people who posses true fear and real hatred along with newer, deadlier technologies that create horrifying weapons of mass destruction have made the world a more dangerous planet. In this novel Clancy brings alive two very major challenges to America's current role in the world.

First, Clancy outlines a believable coalition of anti-American nations united only by a desire to profit from our difficulties. Second, he chillingly describes the horrors of a biological epidemic deliberately unleashed by someone who is driven by hatred.

It is worth enduring the too long and too frequent Jack Ryan speeches and maudlin introspection to get to the 80% of the book which outlines a world that could be and dangers that are all too real. This is one of Clancy's more thought provoking novels.

Summary: Long but good
Review: A very good read but somewhat long, it also seemed to finish with all sub-plots then go into real heavy techno-war, then come back with a interesting ending. Who am I to buck success. All in all another good book and would we all like to have a President that could talk as President Ryan did in the final pages?. God Bless America.

Summary: Slow But Sure!
Review: You have to give credit to Clancy's ability to write stories built around techno-warfare. The level of detail is just uncanny. Maybe that's why I keep reading his work.

The book is a slow read for about the first 500 pages, but by the time you get down to the last 500, you appreciate the fact that all those details and subplots were there. As one reviewer said, one subplot just ended rather abruptly with no real contribution to the overall story. I beg to disagree. Often, we never hear of stories or developments that lead to why things are as they are. That particular subplot had such an interesting buildup just died on the wayside. That's real life for you.

Anyway, this is not one of the best stories written about Jack Ryan. After many exciting books written about him as an advisor to many important people in the government, being on the field to save lives, workout a defection, etc. it's an interesting story to see him for a change as the President. I guess Jack has to grow old too.

If you have a lot of travel time or time in your hands, this is a good read.

Summary: This book needed a better editor
Review: Other reviewers have given the plot, so I won't bother. My only problem with this book is that it really needed some good editing. Clancy spends far too many pages setting up every little detail of each subplot.

Overall, it is a good story, and the last 300 pages or so are really good. I'm glad I read it, but I would have liked it better if this behemouth were maybe 100 pages shorter.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Classic Clancy
Review: This book is engrossing and a time-consumer, but worth the ride... Not a short Spec-Ops novel for the weekend. If your into Clancy- than get this book. This is a classic Clancy novel that just begs for a movie on the big screen.
